PS3 Orange Box to receive patch?

Posted on January 2nd, 2008 at 06:33 EDT

It has been well documented that the PlayStation 3 version of The Orange Box is the weakest of all its incarnations. Many PS3 owners that were looking forward to the value packed game were upset when they discovered the multitude of bugs and bad coding that lead to this inferior version of the game.

Furthermore, the same fans soon voiced their opinions on the official Valve forums and even caught the attention of Valve employee “BurtonJ”, prompting him to respond user criticism of the game.

"I hope that we will be able to correct any major issues in the future," he stated. Indeed, this slightly ambiguous statement has lead many to believe that the firm is planning on releasing a patch to fix the issues currently plaguing the game.

Although Valve is the brains behind the game, users should keep in mind that it isn't entirely the company’s fault, as the PS3 port was in fact handed over to EA London. However, because it is still Valve's brainchild, it is most certainly in the developer's best interests to keep the quality of its most-popular franchise as high as possible. Stay tuned for any new updates on The Orange Box patch situation.

The Orange Box is a video game compilation produced and published by Valve, which contains Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. The PlayStation 3 version was released on December 11, 2007 in North America and in Europe. Stay tuned for any new updates on The Orange Box patch situation.

I have The Orange Box for PS3, and it's really not that bad. Sure, I've experienced a few hiccups, but I don't understand what people are whining about. Anyway it's good to see they "sort of" take responisibility for making their games better.

Iv got it and a quite a way throgh half-life 2 and well the only time it had a bad frame rate once and that lasted exscaly less 1 second

Given the fact Gabe Newall (founder of Valve) categorically stated "Developing for the PS3 is a waste of time" (cite: http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3164539), and the fact the quality of this title is below par, I have avoided The Orange Box and certainly will think hard about buying any other PS3 title with the Valve logo.

I would not feed my PS3 a disk from such an anti PS3 bod in the shape of Gabe Newall, he sucks and it sucks, no way is he getting my money for a lazy port. or should that be a very lazy port

Didnt Gabe newel work for M$?

I doubt a patch is going to appear, HL2DM has needed a patch for 3 years and still we wait.

I have orange box, and I actually love it! I have played and completed the PC version, and there are some differences in gameplay on the PS3 version, but if you can appreciate what the game is and the fact it is a couple of years old now, it still knocks most recent games clean over! it does have the occasional frame rate issue, but tbh i found that uncharted had far more. Dont get me wrong, I absolutely loved uncharted! If you like FPS games, the orange box is a must have! Easily 20+ hours of gameplay involved! The only thing I really notice about the PS3 version is the lack of 5.1 sound! If they could patch this, it would be great!

It's not that the frame rates are that bad, it's that the load times are too often and too slow, worse than the other versions.   If they could patch up the laoding times that would help.

Not that bad the slowdown is terrible, compaired to the 360 and pc version it's complete hash of things, well thats ea for you and after every thing said by gabe newel the creater of the game regarding the ps3 he can stick is game where the sun don't shine, i'm not knocking anyone who bought the game though it's your own choice and if your happy with the game all good and well but i'm just giving my own opinion.

I will not purchase this game no matter how many patches come out.

A crappy PS3 port, that is all it is.  They should have known about the problems in testing.

No Thanks

psn id: gingo.... yeah i was excited about this game until i heard about it being a crappy port so no matter what they do i'm never buying it especially since EA were the lead development team, such lazy developers

I dont understand how anyone who made this game could be "proud" of this port. the load times in the ps3 version are often 3 times longer than on the 360 version, there are more framerate issues, and the ps3 version was delayed about a month. great work ea london. if anything, the ps3 version should have faster loading times, that is if they utilised the ps3's hdd.

This is really poor of ea london, how could they deliver such a low quality package on the mighty ps3.I think they have alot to learn from capcom's DMC4, which feels and has no loading times on the ps3(ie when installed on the hdd).

I have the game and the frame rate only messed up on me three times.  The game is a great game to me and I suggest any fan of the series should pick it up.

not trying to mean, but whoever bought this crap deserved what they got, which is crap.why would you give valve your money in the first place, they (Valve) said it loud and clear "FU?K PS3 owner"! thats why  they toss this game to EA, cause they didn't want  have anything to do with the PS3. so if you want to give someone money that is spitting in your face, then you deserve what you get, cause you're a fool! if this seems harsh, i'm sorry but it still the truth.

C'mon, you guys still blame EA for the port?Valve was kind enough to not give a  fuc k about our version of the game and handed the job to EA,and still EA is the one to be blamed?

I am still anticipating to get this game but this might change it. That many bugs thats its unplayable. Thats really bad coming from valve.

has everyone forgotten what valve has said about the Sony ps3 being a waste of time and inferior in all aspects. instead of whining like a little girl about the difficulty on programming on the ps3, he should be out looking for better talented staff to do the job. take your patch and shove it !!

Seriously, I JUST finished the original xbox version. And from what we're hearing about the PS3 version, it's not that much of an improvement. Save your $60, get the PC/original xbox versions if you must, and wait until orange box drops to around $20 in the bargain bin if you really want to play portal.

Orange Box was my favourite package from 2007 - Its a bargain. You get HL2, HL2 Episode 1, Episode 2,  Portal, Team Fortress 2.... I got the PC version and also scored a free copy of Peggle Extreeme. These are some of the best games of 2007... all in one pack. It's awesome.

I was excited about this game untill fat Gabe Newel open his mouth.. I've lost a lot of respect for Valve and have no plans to pick up this game. Patch or no patch, Gabe can keep his crapy port. As far as I'm concerned Valve is now  "a waste of my time"

I didn't think it was that bad, sure the framerate dropped in places but it didn't make the game unplayable, i thought it was pretty good, and v good value, can't wait for Episode 3, whenever it is it's coming out.

Sure, try to fix it now. Valve handed-off to London because they didn't want to "waste their time" coding for the PS3. Plain and simple. It will bite them in the ars at some point. Time will tell.

I refuse to buy this gamenew.  Both Valve and EA suck and neither of them will be seeing money from me.  If i play it, i'll be renting it or buying it used.
