PS3 games more fun than Wii's, says Stringer

Posted on December 13th, 2007 at 10:35 EDT

Sony Corp. Chairman Sir Howard Stringer has gone on record to state that he feels PlayStation 3 software is “infinitely more fun” than titles available on Nintendo’s Wii console.

Speaking during an interview with UK tabloid The Guardian, Stringer insisted he is "much more confident" regarding the success of the company’s next-generation console, which for the first time outsold the Wii in Japan last month.

Focusing specifically on the Wii, which is currently leading the next-generation console race around the globe, Stringer insisted "PlayStation 3 will come into its own because its [high-end games] are infinitely more fun, demanding and exciting" than those available on Nintendo’s machine.

Finally, and perhaps unsurprisingly, he revealed that he was “happy the Wii seems to be running a bit short of hardware,” referring to the ongoing supply shortages that have been plaguing the machine since its inception in late 2006.

Oh, that's groundbreaking! A Sony employee admits that Sony PS3's games are more fun that their competitors' games!

Makes sense. the wii is not a hardcore system and thus the depth of most of it's games  with the exception of a few like Metroid and Mario Galaxy will only hold your interest for a week at best unless you;re a non gamer who just wants to fool around or a 10 year old with nothing better to do. That's not to say nothing on Wi is fun but like I've said from the begining it's not a machine that delivers the same kinda variety that the PS2 did. High demand is only good for Nintendo if that translates into software sales, and it's not really doing that. Also keep in mind it is still HALF the price of it's competitors. But still PS3's arnt just sitting on shelves, they're definately moving product now. espceially when you can actually GET them as opposed to being told you have to wait an indeterminant amount of time.

The PSN games might not approach the same level of the Wii's VC games (I mean they are classics after all) but some of them are still pretty intensely enjoyable experiences.

The fact of the matter is that the Wii is a Fad. By the end of 08, sales will begin to drop and PS3 will truely shine. I plan on getting a Wii when Super Smash Bothers, comes out but thats the only game I really want.

You can't underestimate all the dumb people that are out there.  They will buy it just because all their friends have it, and the rest of them will buy it because a lot of people are buying it.  Just like the Ipod.

Well, I too have to agree with Kane on this one.  I also have to agree that the Wii is a fad...and I bought into it.  I got one, played through Zelda, played a couple Virtual Console games, might try Mario Galaxy, but mostly I just got bored of it very quickly.  My PS3 has gotten 100's of hours more use than the Wii has gotten out of me.

For sure, ps3 is better then the waste of time console WII. I was reading about WII hardware,  its only different then GABECUBE about 2 percent. Ps3 hardware is million times stronger then WII and better.

psn id: gingo... i disagree the only game i've had real fun playing has been uncharted (not played rachet and clank yet) but the rest have been good but more serious whereas i have played wii sports and red steel and both were very enjoyable so i disagree but ps3 games dont need to be more fun all they need is to be good, and in cases of bad ports, playable

For those claiming Wii is for kids are idiots. It is in fact PS3 which is for kids, as only kids have enough time to invest playing hardcore games. Adults have work, chores and kids which take their time, so they only have time to play games which are easy to pick up and don't take big chunks of time at a sitting. PS3 appeals to hardcore gamers, true, but the vast majority of hardcore gamers are kids, instead of adults with a life.

My honest oppinion is the Wii isn't any less of a gaming console as people seem to make out, ok the graphics aren't amazing, the games could be a little less childish, but the potential still stands. The Wii is what is bringing consoles one step closer to actually being a real part of the game, i personally think the Wii is what will start the transition from a FPS using keyboard mouse or gamepad, to an FPS wiv the prospects of possibly VR gloves and visors, people keep going back to how puny the Wii is compared to the more powerful consoles and to be honest it is, i, myself, am a total ps3 fanboy, but i can still acknowledge that what the Wii has done will lead to a whole new experience, a whole new level of gaming for everyone and i applaude their efforts. But this isn't something new, nintendo has always been at the edge of new hardware considering they were the first to make a light gun, they've already before made the power glove and now they were the first to make motion sensitivity actually good, whereas sony have always had the brute force of the consoles... we won't even talk about microsoft coz they suck =D

@Jeremy55456

If they made something like a "save game" feature on these new fangled consoles maybe the PS3 wouldn't be such a kids toy.  I mean, I don't know about you guys but I got things to do.  Playing Pokemon and Mario games in short bursts is the only thing adults can do these days for gaming entertainment.

I disagree.  There are adults who would rather have a PS3 than a Wii.  Granted, they may not have kids, but they are definitely not young children.

This dude is starting to act like another company i've heard of. Talking down the competition. Comparing PS3 and Wii games is like comparing jolly ranchers and twix. They're both candy, they both taste good, but they're completely different. Stringer doesn't need to tell us our games are fun, we ''''ing know that. Every platform available including the pc and handhelds offer fun and entertaining games. It just depends on whether you prefer jolly ranchers or twix.

Does anyone know if Nintendo can put a "sucessful" game out that doesn't have Mario, Zela or Metroid in the title??? I bought a Wii out of curiosity, and I agree with D3v1l and Alpha2, it's "uniqueness" burns out really fast. And you know, there can be such a thing as too much Mario. although I doubt it in Japan............

Ps3 gamers are entering into the hardcore element of gaming but sony is showing it cares for it's casual gamer too (singstar) for a start ps3 games are better quality but it's hard to say what’s the most fun i honestly have more fun and enjoyment with my ps3, but you could ask anyone else and they could say wii, that's a difficult one? but i guess the simplest question is the hardest to answer.

the fun factor is critical when dealing with games. Theres all types of ways to make games as what we call "Fun" the key is innovation. Bring something new and enjoyable to the table and watch people eat it all up.

Wii has done that greatly but has now became a fad case because of word of mouth. " Have you seen the wii and what it can do." I'm pretty sure a lot of people have heard this before. But this is what peaks people curiousity because everyone is talking about it and it gets the best of people. But when they play it for a while it gets burned out fast and then leaves them with " That's it?"

PS3 came to a very slow start and is gradually increasing with momentum just like a train and once the speed increases it's hard to stop it's full force onslaught. With key games that are already to be predicted as system sellers all Sony needs to focus on it that "WOW" factor that everyone was talking about. We know it has multitude of capabilites but Sony really needs to focus on IP's with fun, creative, innovative ideas. Soon youll hear people saying, " I knew it could do that.... but i didn't know it would be that much fun."

Key IP's that i'm seeing already is LBP, and eye of judgement both have different ways to give you that wow factor. I'm also remember back in 2005 E3 there were trailers for a game that let you evaluate how you did in a acting perspective for auditions and also a game were you virtually get to interact with with two girls in a gaming environment ( i think it was I Spy or something like that) So I guess what it boils down to is we need new IP's that people haven't seen before, as a matter of fact an IP that is put it in it's own category. So it wont be classified as a FPS, action/platformer or puzzler.

@naucious23

You should put that in a hard back cover.  lol  No but just because I have a ps3 Im not going to hate on the wii.   the wii has a way better internet browser and you can upload past nintendo games(more than the like 4 past games ps3 offers), and you can actually get anyone to play it.  Plus it is fun.  I have a ps3, and most games require skill that not everone can just pick up and play.  With the wii you can.  Lastly I want to say that ps3 Online play has so many probs with every game it's redic.

Gee over course he is going to say that *rolls eye's* - what may be not fun for him is for someone else and looking at the sales so far for the Wii millions already agree. Though thats not to say that PS3 games will not carry more variety then ever before which will come back to the question of delivering high quality games.

so Jeremy5455615, for you ps3 is for kid's and adult's only ply on fuçk;ng mario cr@ppy games, get real!I'm 27 years old, I go to work everyday and i still have time to play on games like final fantasy and grand turismo, wii is for kid's and people who don't know how to play video games and that aren't interrested in becoming hardcore gamers, like houswifes four example. I'll prefere keeping my camecube
to play mario karts with my mates if i want to have fun with a nintendo gamesystem
