Sony Corp’s PlayStation 3 console has continued to narrow the gap between itself and the Nintendo Wii in Japan, with the sell out ratio for both machines dropping from 6:1 to just 2:1 between June and October, respectively.
Nintendo sold through 110,415 Wii units in the four weeks ended October 28, with PS3 selling 47,183 units during the same period.
The increase in sales is most likely due to the introduction of a new price cut Sony employed last month, with the Japanese hardware manufacturer lowering the price of both its 20GB and 60GB machines by 5,000 and 54,980 yen each, respectively.
The 40GB PS3 will debut in the region on November 11, priced 39,980 yen.

Soon enough the PS3 will overthrough the wii. It may take some time but it will happen. At least worldwide
Hopefully these sales arent just due to the Wii being in almost everybody's hands, thus no need to buy anymore of them. Never the less, the PS3 seems to be finally gaining steam towards this holiday through some great games coming out that I cant wait to pick up!! :)
in the last week of OCt the wii outsold the ps3 by a ratio 1.5 : 1 (3:2)
the wii sold 27000 units & the PS3 sold 18000 units
the gap is narrowing more
psn id: gingo.. the gap is narrowing but theres still a bit to catch up hopefully with some of the more japanease oriented games coming out next year this will improve the sales there
There is no narrowing of the lead, its continuing to get bigger and bigger. This just indicates that it ps3 is nearing the same rate of sale as the wii
haha the gap between them still rises as the Wii outsells the PS3 no matter how small the ratio. The PS3 needs to start outselling the Wii for the gap to get smaller.
Its going to be awhile before the wii and PS3 are side-by-side in terms of console sales. That also doesn't even include games being released on either console.
Yea this article is a hugely misguided. The rate of sales are getting closer but the wii gap in the market is still huge. Although I know we will out sell the wii in the long run do to the fact that the ps3 is a long term investment and the wii is like a short term thing more people will switch off the wii and 360 and come to the ps3 when their systems become obsolete.
My prediction, the ps3's price cut is just enough to help the ps3 overthrough the 360, and in 2008 it will pass the wii. SOny's new console's future is looking very bright right now.
Well of course there is going to be a slow down of Wii sales in Japan, there is nobody left without one.
Slow and steady wins the race... Isn't that how the saying goes?
Is this good news? 47,000 units isn't a lot over 4 weeks time. That's pretty much what they have been doing already. Seems to me the Wii lost sales.
I really don't think the PS3 and Wii will reach a close unit sale figure, it should be a good 15,000-20,000 sales difference or more. If all goes well by the start of Q2 2008, PS3 sales will spike up so high worldwide (unless Nintendon releases an awesome game for Wii, I hope not!) and even more so once we see the end of HD-DVD! And the biggest leap of all will come from one game...FFXIII (in Japan anyways[1st]). The world will 'synergise' and PS3 won't be looking back! Even if another Halo game is released...results won't be as close as the last game! Here we come...
The wii isn't even considered next gen. The real war is between M$ and Sony, and M$ certainly isn't putting up much of a fight.
In the end though, the PS3 is still expected to outsell the Wii in software, possibly hardware, but most definately software. (By many analysts.)
