BIA: Hell's Highway 'Realism' trailerPublisher SCi Entertainment has gone on record to say that Sony will need to lower the price of PlayStation 3 if the company is to experience significant growth in sales and meet its current forecasts for the machine.
"The Board continues to believe in the long-term commercial success of PlayStation 3 but believes this may take more time than originally forecast by Sony," commented SCi Chief Executive, Jane Cavanagh.
"The Board is of the opinion that the key driver to the acceleration of the installed base of PlayStation 3 will be a further hardware price cut."
The company, best known as the publishers for key franchises Hit Man and Tomb Raider, also recently increased its expenditure on PlayStation 3 development, from GBP 4 million to GBP 13.8 million.
"Until such time that such a price move is announced by Sony, the Board believes that it is prudent to increase our provision to £13.8m against the carrying value of certain capitalised development costs," explained Cavanagh.
Total revenue for the company for the year ended June 2007 was down by 20 per cent to approximately GBP 144 million; however, given the substantial sum of price protection charges at GPB 14.5 million, this puts the number at GBP 158.5, down just 12 per cent from the same period last year.

psn id: gingo... i really hope sony listen to all these developers because i tihnk the ps3 would benefit greatly form a big price cut and if it took the plunge they might fall short in the short term but in the long term they will make huge profits
Just look at the current news out there! The new model it going to be introducted within the next few weeks and the price is going to be $399. Sony can deny it all they want but the new model is coming out before the holidays just look at all the reports.
I'm sorry am i the only person in the world that thinks sony dosent need to cut the price of the ps3, i mean look at what you get for your money if you where to by an xbox elite and then all the extras to bring it up to a good spec you'll have spent more than a ps3 would cost.
Whoa,i thought you were talking about Sony international,i was like "WTF!!!"
just like that dude said they want you to fell like you want to earn your ps3 not just get it or something like that!
Stop, Stop, Stop. This is all wishful thinking and all. But still, Sony said the rumors aren't true. Even Gamespot's bogus or not bogus section stated it was Bogus. Lets just wait and see what Sony does. If they release a 40GB model for $399.99 that is a smart move. But! That will kill the sales of the 80GB model, I mean, the price jump between the two for a smaller hard disk is pointless. You can buy a new Hard Disk with 160GB for $100 off newegg. Why would you pay $600 bux for the 80GB model at that point? I honestly dont see it happening esspecailly since a 40GB hard disk is not going to cost Sony $200.00. So they would have to take yet another financial loss against the PS3 if they did that. Lets just wait and find out what happens this holiday season.

thats right, £425 is more than too much. £300-£350 would be cool
just cut the damn price !!
All Sony has to do is air more commercials on TV and mention all the features it has and does and they would sell a lot more systems.
I think a price cut will be good for those who want a cheaper system. I for one Did not care to pay full price. Although its still not as worth it. Once MGS3 and other games like that come out the PS3 will have a solid line up of games. It onestly dose not matter if the PS3 is 300 dollars. People will still not buy many games, wich is what they expect to make money on. Although if they do something like that then for whenever they actually release more good game's people will already have the console.
I'm down with a price cut but only if it sticks. However its also hard to then cut or put on sale the sysytem when the heavy hitting titles come out.
But they need to do something if they want to hit their numbers cause I believe whats on the current market won't help them reach it. I mean sure, I don't think the price is that much for what you get but......I got mine and I want to see install base grow, so drop that price and advertise like crazy
i bought my ps3 at launch and i thought it was a good price, i dont know what people are complaining about, the ps3 needs a price cut and that. THe ps3 is the top of the line gaming machine, a blu-ray player, (bluray players alone cost through the roof.) Also you can go online with your friends, internet, remote play, there is so much stuff packed into this thing, i think its a very good price as it stands.
^^^^^Yes I would pay a grand for a PS3 with ten grand worth of stuff in it,because no matter how you slice it that is a bargain. And so is the PS3 we have now,if it cost $850 to make at launch and we got it for $600 guess what....that's a bargain.I swear people would complain if SONY gave them away too so why bother
I love Sony to death but I believe that they should stick to their guns on this one. Keep the 60gb at $499 and inform the masses on what it can do. The PS3 has the future of gaming in mind. You are making an investment when you buy one and IT WILL PAY OFF!!
Better yet, they should of kept the 20gb around and put a $399 price tag on it.
price cut is the way come on sony do it now!
well if there going to keep the price of the PS3 @ $599 then they need to advertise it as not just a gaming console, cause thats what most people who hear PS3 think it is. If more commercials showed the power of the PS3 and the potential the PS3 has, then im pretty sure more consumers would jump aboard for the coming holiday season.
I agree that what Sony needs is more advertising to the general public. Tout it's Blueray playback capability. Sell it as a Hi-Def DVD player, and internet box, and game system all in one. Then those people spending $500 on a Blueray player alone may consider the PS3 instead. Of course Blueray itself is a question mark, and many people are not ready to jump on the Hi-Def DVD bandwagon until the format war is won.
i'm another that thinks sony doesn't need a price cut, i mean the ps3 is more than just a console, not only does it perform better than the 360, when more main titles come out and ps home plus when they start 2 really test the spec of the ps3 and really use the core's potential then its gonna be more than just a bargain for what it costs now, people are just to tight to pay it out because they'd rather moan and try get sony 2 drop the price, i paid full price at launch and after using the ps3 i would definately not change my mind if i had 2 do it over again, as for the 20GB model its not just a smaller hard drive that has cut the price it also is missing a fair few of the 60GB model's functions, and thats why its cheaper by so much.
360 SuX =D, i mean 360 Elite still is no where near the standard of the PS3, and if u get a PS3 on game its going for 424 with 3 games and 2 controllers, thats already about 160 quid cut off the price which is takin it down to just above 360 elite's price and still PS3 would destroy the 360 in a specs test
I love Sony and all, but I really hope they fall flat on their face with a new SKU (40GB). Sony deserves to lose money if they think taking all that stuff off the PS3 will sell it. It's high end for fsck's sake. We don't need to dumb our console down.
AND SHUT UP WITH THE PRICE CUTS!!! If you haven't got a PS3 by now, why are you even here? If you can't put $500-600 of trust into Sony, go have a Red Ring for breakfast.
Get your fscking games out Sony and you won't have stupid companies and whiny children spamming the boards with "Drop the price!! I whine because I have severe glaucoma and that's why I can't see value!!" *Storms off, enraged by some peoples ignorance*
lol @ inferno reaper...
I guess hes mad, but n e ways I bought the PS3 @ 600 for the 60 gig didn't have the problem of spending the money either. People called me dumb for doing it especially the non gamers that know me. But when they needed to get on the internet they were the first to jump on my PS3, play music... PS3, watched HD movies ..... PS3, now that they know all that it can do and much more they now were convinced on getting one and it was not just for gaming. So sony really needs to advertise the potential of the PS3. I know it will sell by doing that.
Sony needs lots of exclusive high quality (Gamespot 9.0+) games to move PS3's but with all the developers at the moment - it's like the chicken & the egg thing... They want the 80GB model priced at $399 to guarantee a good level of sales and then (and only then) will they commit their money in funding PS3 exclusives.
Reality is Sony should have done a better job at the beginning - before releasing PS3 in securing Developer support instead of just asuming it. They need to whip out the cheque book and buy back Devil May Cry, Silent Hill, Ace Combat, GTA etc etc etc... instead of saying "so what let them go". I dont want to loose those games and I dont want to settle for a sloppy seconds or third port.
Had the PS3 launched with crack-o-jack games most gamers would not have cared about the price so much. I certainly did not - but then again I thought lots of games where on the way - boy was I wrong! Now that the games are not there, & the damage has been done PS3 will indeed need to go to $399 but the 40GB idea is a big mistake. Cut once and cut clean. Dont introduce yet another temporary model that confuses people. Worst of all stop with the gimping approach - dont cut out USB & HDMI ports or whatever. Infact Sony really needs to put back hardware compatibility across all lines.
there are still alot of good games comin out for PS3 and tbh after DMC3 and the fact dante looked like a god damn dingle, and the fact in DMC4 they've cut out the main character of the series i'm kinda reluctant to even wanna play it as for silent hill that just got a bit 2 much, it become more of a game for developers to make money on than for us to enjoy, ace combat would be nice in HD i reckon and as for GTA the 4th in the series doesn't look that spectacular so far i'm just hoping it makes me wrong
