PS3 outsells Wii in Japan for second week running

Posted on November 22nd, 2007 at 06:44 EDT

Sony is starting to see the effects of the newly released 40GB PS3 model already in Japan as it has outsold the craze that is the Nintendo Wii for the second straight week. While many anticipated that the Wii would have a strong week with the release of Super Mario Galaxy, the PS3 was able to hold on despite the competition from one of the "heavy hitter" titles for the Wii.

It is interesting to see the PS3 doing so well upon release of such a high profile title. Past releases of games in the Super Mario franchise have usually caused a huge spike in console sales for Nintendo, especially since the current instalment in the franchise is supposed to be one of the better ones in quite some time (comparable to Mario 64).

The surge in PS3 sales comes after a price cut for the 20GB & 60GB systems on October 17 and the subsequent announcement and release of the 40GB PS3. The 40GB was released in Japan on November 11 (on the one year anniversary of the system in Japan) in both the original Piano Black color and a special, Japan-only, Ceramic White model.

Although there has been much debate about whether Sony made the right decision by removing backwards compatibility from the 40GB model and reducing the number of USB ports from 4 to 2, the system seems to be holding its own in this region. Below are the actual sales numbers for the week of 11/11-11/18:

Hardware:

DSLite: 81000
PSP: 66000
PS2: 8800
PS3: 53000
Wii: 36000
Xbox360: 5700

Nice to see Sony and Nintendo staying strong in their homes. But man, Microsoft is barely getting a look in over there.

I guess the Japanese don't like FPS games too much. :P

This is more than likely due to the fact that almost the entire population of japan already owns a Wii rather than the PS3 outselling due to sheer desireability...

Man, what are the Japanese consumers doing with their DSes? Buying one, stashing it, then going out to buy another one? Either that or they've decided to settle for the DS instead of the wii.

I dont mean to come across as nit-picking, but the 40gig Ceramic White model is not exclusive to Japan. Other asian regions, such as Singapore and Hong Kong, also have this model for sale. Other than that, this is great news!

I highly doubt this is due to the entire population of Japan having a wii already. Just because Japan is a small island don't mistaken them for having a small population. Japan is a crowded place and according to a 2004 census there are 127 million people living there. Theres what. 12 or 13 million wii's that have been sold worldwide. Just do the math.

I'll say it again. Nintendo did a great job of selling the Wii to non-gamers. but the problem is nnon gamers dont care about "heavy hitters" when they're happy enough just playing Wiisports for 6 hours. Basically they sold everyone a paddle with a ball tied to it and then asked people to buy new balls for it but everyone's like "why should we when we like the ball we have already."

@alpha

Defiantly right in what you say. Nintendo since N64 has had no problem convcing their fanbase to buy their consoles but Nintendo don't shift software. Their heavy hitters back then sold well and helped to move console but those days so far, are behind them. I think Nintendo should change their mascot from Mario to a human brain. Those quriky fun games are the only ones that are going to sell on the Wii and there is becoming to many of them which will do more harm than good to the system. The real problem that Nintendo is facing is that they're are targeting a consumer base that doesn't buy much software, Mario Galaxy is a good example of this. If it was 10 million consoles sold to hardcore you would be seeing greater sales numbers for Mario Galaxy. Basically the wrong people own the Wii. Now we all we see even more party style games and peripherals after WiiFit as Nintendo desperately tries to keep the casualers spending their money on Nintendo products and software. If they concentrated on their own fanbase at least they would have had it easier to develop games and sell them.

By targeting the 'cheap skate' market, the ones who dont have the money, or dont want to spend the money for a better system, probably wont be buying many games either for the same reason.

Sony targeting people who are willing to spend good money for a good product, will have strong software sales years down the road.

Japan has a different taste in their gaming than us U.S. citizens, thats why xbox is doing great here because they supply nothing but FPS, even though i like an intense shootout it gets boring from time to time. Thats why i have been a Sony favorite because it has variety... games for the non-gamer and hardcore gamer alike. such as rpg, platform, action adventure, fps, puzzle. Reason why xbox probably isn't doing that great is probably it's not a japan product, may have been made in japan lol but not owned by one, plus japanese people dont like that many fps. Their peaceful people but just dont push them. lol

PS2 sales is dying faster than I thought. Thats bad news for Sony because PS2 is about the only profitable thing they have at the moment.

LoL @ The Cleaner ... Tell me you didn't just say that because according to those numbers Sony sold more hardware than anybody including Nintendo. LoL.

Once the PS2 goes down to that magical $99.99 price it will once again have a huge spike and will sell well for at least another 6 months. I know a few people who don't own one but would love to play MGS3, God of War 1 & 2, Shadow of Collosus, FFVIII and the Ratchet & Clank games and are waiting for the PS2 to go down in price to play all the wonderful games it has.

The Cleaner:
This year Sony's PS3 made them a big loss, but that's ok because if you combine all the gaming platforms they have out there they only made 31 billion dollars this year.

This is more than excellent news.We do not yet have the real killer apps on the ps3 MGS4,FFXIII,..... yet it has started outselling the 360 n Wii.This gap will seriously widen by the time PS HOME is released n more killer apps are released. The PS3 will certainly be the leading console by this time next year.Sorry for the Wii n 360; infact farewell
