Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian has said that Sony appears less concerned with “chasing” market share in the war against Microsoft and Nintendo, and as a result is unlikely to lower the price of the PlayStation 3 in 2008.
Speaking in light of the company’s 2007 fiscal year results, Sebastian noted that the electronics giant appears more focused in promoting the online component of its latest home console, such as PlayStation Home.
“During its earnings call, Sony management indicated the company is now more focused on achieving profitability in the PlayStation segment and rolling out online services (e.g., PlayStation Home) rather than chasing unit market share vs. Microsoft and Nintendo,” he said.
“Importantly, management comments also suggest that a price cut is less likely on the PS3 this year, at least in the near term.”
Sony announced Wednesday that it sold 9.24 million PS3 consoles in the year ended March 31, and forecast a further 10 million sales for the current business year.

you get what you pay for and sony know they are sitting on a quality piece of kit

Yep, you get what you pay for,so why so many people hate on xbox live, the reason people pay for it is because it is the top online service for a console and probly alwas will be.Anyway sorry for going off topic but i had to get that in:P.
Do people expect sony to drop there prices again!? from day one they would make a loss of a few hundred dollars per console, the games industray is a business just like any other and they make money and have to keep maing money for them to improve their service. If someone is wanting a ps3 then they should save up the money and just pay for it or try to get a bargin on an internet auction website. Anyway the consumer can not expect sony to drop their drop prices and make even more of a loss per console.
The reason so many people hate xbox live is purely down to the thought of lining Bill Gates already bulging pockets...............Bill: hhmmmmm now lets see if there are any satelites for sale, i fancy a new one!
And i think the online service for the PS is great, god damit should we really have to pay to go online? I already do that with my ISP, it would be like paying to view websites on your PC. Paying for stuff has to stop somewere and i really dont think that xbox live is that much better that it warrants extra cash
I can't see any reason for a price cut either. The PS3 is a high quality piece of equipment at a fair price!
Not only is PS3 fairly priced for what you get, but why would/should Sony consider cutting the cost when the system is selling just fine at the current price?
As for PSN... it can do anything that Live can do, and more. Live only recently broke the 16-player barrier, while we've had 40-player from day 1, and will have 60-player with Resistance 2. Once in-game XMB access arrives, we'll have everything Live has. And when Home is released, we'll have more. For free. That alone is worth the extra initial cost of PS3.
The real money is not made on the consoles. Its made on the licenses game makers pay to have their games put on the console. I don't see it out of the picture for a price drop around Christmas time. Not that I think it needs one. They just need to get more upper tier packages out.
@Paranoimia - I couldnt't agree more about PSN vs XBL. Sony has had a lot of catching up to do, and the sad part is they will do it, and much better, in less time then it took XBL.
i agree with Paranoimia, psn will be even better when the trophies come.
XBOX Sucks, they might have a great online service but you have to pay. Are you telling me their hard drives are tops too? 120 gig hard drive for $180. Their hardware sucks!
i think there will be a price cut at some point, probly near santa time .
they're going to have to compete with MS's price drop, somehow, though.
i think if they o have a price cut. it should go to 399.00 because people have been buying those 40 gb because hey don't want to spend some more money. but, i am still deciding if i should sell my ps3 and get the MGS4 bundle. i want an 80 gb and gun metal. i'll just see what happens. i think my friend is giving me 200.00 back from buying food and gas. i'll just trade my games in for more money and probably give my buddy my ps3 60 gb. so, he can get GTAIV
Yes, live has some good features, but the one fearure that should be free is playing games online. Make people pay extra for the features, but not to play each other.
Nintendo will keep the same, PS3 may go down 50 if anything, 360 will just spew out a new 1 AGAIN, that is cheap and like the arcade 1, crappy!

There is absoloutely no need for a price drop again so soon. If people still won't go buy then they likely a lost cause. The PS3 is a fantastic piece of hardware and still IMO worth the $599 price tag.
Ps3 online has always been better then xbox. When HOME and ingame xmb ALSO... the new trophy and achievement come out then we will really have it all.

Cutting costs would mean less revenue to make up for all they lost in the beginning, plus they need a little bit of money for all their online services.
