Sony Computer Entertainment President Kazuo Hirai has stated he is confident the PlayStation 3 will surpass its rivals by the end of machine’s estimated 10-year lifecycle.
Speaking to the BBC, Hirai commented, “I am very confident that after the 10-year lifecycle we will have the install base that we are looking for and that is obviously to be in the leadership position.”
”We’ve only really begun to scratch the surface with PlayStation 3 but I am confident that given the long life-cycle we have planned for the machine we are going to have a very good install base in all of the major territories,” added Hirai.
In recent news it was also revealed that the console has been outselling Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in Europe since October 2007.

i reckon as soon as microsoft start talking about a xbox 720 is when ps3 will be on top, which could be 3 to 4 years from now
I think the PS3 install base will dominate it's competitors much earlier than 10 years, however, if problems like the GTA4 freeze keep plaguing the PS3 it may take 10 years. Devs need to pay attention to what's happening right now with Rockstar, and make sure they don't make the same mistake. Especially devs like Konami who will sell PS3 exclusive games with the console. If MGS4 has glitches like that, ppl won't just bring the game back to the store, they may bring the system back also. MGS4 will be a big console seller, I don't think Sony or Konami, for that matter, can afford to shake their fanbase like that a 2nd time.

they dont need 10 years....they need 10 aaa titles in 1 year.....2009 will hopefully be that year...
