For the first time ever Sony finds themselves as the underdogs in a battle in which they normally dominate, the videogame market. Since the launch of the Xbox 360 in November 2005, Microsoft set out on a mission and has not looked back since. The following year the PlayStation 3 launched but unlike the PlayStation 2 which quickly reached the #1 position, surpassing the Sega Dreamcast, the PS3 is facing a long and arduous road to the top spot.
In recent weeks, that bumpy road for the PlayStation 3 has started to pave up a bit as the sales of the PS3 has seen a drastic turn around. From August 2007-September 2007 the Xbox 360 was handing it to the PS3 on a large scale, especially with the introduction of the Xbox 360 Elite and the fan favorite, Halo 3. After those fazed a bit, the roles saw a huge reverse.
Now the PlayStation 3 is beginning to show surge in the European markets primarily due to the release of the 40GB PS3 console. Shorting after the release of the 40GB console, the PS3 rose from selling 5,000 units per week in September, to 12,000 plus units at the end of October. To get more in-depth, during the week ending October 28, VG Chartz has the PS3 outselling and out performing the 360 by 10% in the UK and by nearly 50% in the rest of Europe.
Please keep in mind now that this is largely due to the release of the 40GB console which saw a much needed and demanded price cut. Lets be serious, recently the PS3 has not released any AAA titles but yet the console saw this huge surge in sales. Just imagine how it will become once the PS3 releases Home, Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5, and Final Fantasy XIII in 2008? Then you add in the recent release of the 40GB PS3 in North American plus the new holiday campaign, and you have a nice recipe for success. Things are starting to slowly but surely look good for Sony and the PlayStation 3.

Exactly, wait until all our exclusives come out, and i'm pretty sure 360 didn't come out with any good games during their first year, except for Viva Pinata, which was lame.
we shall see
PS3 is catching up.. As expected.
Its obvious.
remmeber VGchartz is not seen as a relibale sourse anymore, could be even more
for instance even though sony themselves annouced they sold 6million Vg chartz seems to think it is nearly 5 million...
No AAA titles... sheesh!! There defintely have!!
These morons on every game website forget to say "ALSO JUST WAIT UNTIL SOCOM RELEASES". Because i garuntee if sells as much copies as MGS4. People love socom and MGS4. just stop leaving out socom.
Also names like LBP and THE AGENCY will do good also, and LA NOIRE too
we dont even have to wait for those listed games, AAA titles are already here like ratchet and then cod 4 and assassins creed, so on.
and Uncharted Waters
yea a lot of AAA titles are going to be coming in the near future and long future, but look at RFOM! and Heavenlt Sword! Lair... well Lair was a bust, but thats ok cause we're gonna have A LOT of AWESOME games to make up for it. Like; Haze, Uncharted Drakes Fortune, Killzone 2, (like the article says) Metal Gear Solid 4, and much much more!!!!! just wait, the PS3 is going to be WAY BETTER than the 360. halo 3 wasn't even that good. Haze and Killzone 2 will demolish it!!!! and when RFOM:2 comes out!!!!!!!!! man can't wait!
let's go sony it's our time
psn id: gingo... ps3s revival was always going to happen it just needed a few games and a price cut to get it going
Our time is almost here and the playstation era will live on
If you think about it no one was feeln' the 360 when it first came out either. No AAA titles were present during the first few months and most games were just ports of PS2 games with a great coat of paint. It wasn't until Gears of War did the system seem to show promise as well as the XBLM finally getting some worthwhile content. No one remembers that because it's been steadily good news (more or less) for MS since then. Sure the system is prone to RRoD but outside of that they've taken exclusive games away from the PS3 and managed to look like the better system thanks to Madden 08. Now it's Sony's turn with (finally) great games and an equally great marketing campaign that easily trumps anything MS has come up with. This is the PS3's true coming out party and I believe things are only going to get better. BRING IT ON!!!!!
@Tetnus I agree with all that you said, & Tomass you're right in the statement you've made about BR, I also hate to repeat myself so much, but even with the minor setbacks that sony had, we're in for a full year, top AAA releases from January to December 2008 and I won't even start with 2009...everyone has been ansious for to get their hands on these great titles, and even with delays the only problem that we're all facing is having that extra buck to buy another game. PS3 has what at least 20 or more games that are absolutely extraordinary and with a lot more being cooked... not even paying 50millions or more for exclusive content will M$ top that. is anyone worried???? I am....with the 360 because i can already see a layer of dust on top of it, because it's sittin' in the shelf for so long
Sony will beat MS by next gen console time, but I doubt the Wii will be overcome by anything, except maybe the DS. I just hope Sony will start letting AO games come out for their consoles. Sony could review them themselves and see if they really want the game published on their console. I'm tired of this censorship crap and I want to see Manhunt 3 in 1080p in all its b!oody, grotesque glory.
---
Enough with the damn censor. I can't even type b!oody without subbing symbols.
So essentially an article that has no point other than to advise people what the author "thinks" "might happen" in the future...
Lets face it...we could wake up tomorrow and videogames could be banned worldwide...do we see any articles about that? nope...The PS3 and The 360 are both excellent consoles with each one having a lot to offer to openminded gamers. 360 has gears, halo, forza and a raftload of games that have been out in the last couple of years along with an online service that is excellent and simply works and does exactly what you want it to do...invite your mates, cross game chat and so forth. The PS3 on the other hand, is still a relative baby and only has a handful of decent games availble (motorstorm, Resistance, Eye of Judgment to name but a few) and an online service that, while free, is still severely lacking when compared to XBL.
Long story short, if you wanna be a fanboy then pick your side and let battle commence. The rest of us are happy to own both consoles and reap the benefits.
Hot Hot CONSOLE BABYCAKES
AAA titles? I think Ratchet and Clank qualifies.
its was bound to happen we all knew this xbox is now ps3 is future
PS3 will rock to the top. as always.....
JD, you mentioned 3 games for each system how does that qualify as xbox having a better library. Here's something for ya man, Xbox "is" Halo, Gears. And dude really that's what "everyone" knows it for nothing else. Playstation, you named 3 games? Here lemme help you out, it is "known" for GoW, Resistance, Motostorm, FF, MGS, Warhawk, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Socom, Tekken, Uncharted, Gran Tourismo, Wipeout., Heavenly Sword. Less known games are, Eye of Judgment, Folklore, White Knight Story, Afrika. And pls dont bring up Xbox's one game on the horizon Mass Effect which looks like its being brought to PS3. Oh and Bioshock and Gears are on the PC and are better than Xbox's. BTW how is this thing selling?
well, lets wait and see!
I really hope it does :), ive been watching the fox television station and every commercial break there is at least one playstation ad, the new one, its so dope. Gets me pumped up :)
Playstation owns xbox PS1,PS2 and of course PS3 way better systems then xbox crap.Im playing my buddy's 360 not that impressive.Tiberium Wars 3 is fun great game tho not bad for xbox.
yeah.... my ass
I'm sorry Heavenly Sword IS an AAA title. R&C IS an AAA title. And it's not so much the 40gb as it is the general price drop. I'd presume a lot of those people still have PS2s so they can get by witout the BC. But all that means is that Sony in general is still doing great becaue of the popularity of the last gen system Still beeing out their rival's current gen system.
Did anyone really ever seriously doubt it? I have a 360 too and it is no way near as good as the PS3
This is very encouraging news - I hope the publishers take note...
Its funny how some have been saying for ages that PS3 needs a price cut - and we got flamed for saying it.
Then we said quit focusing on the media center BR angle and get back to basics - focus on the games - and again we got flamed for saying it...
All I want now is for Sony to bring back BC and start releasing select PS2 games that include additional features if played on PS3 - IE: start giving the 120 million PS2 users real incentives to upgrade - then we will be number one!
Just buy the 60gb version if you need bc....
It will be a great day when Sony bypasses Microsoft's over-heating pile of Junkbox. Honestly, calling it 360 to try and trick people into thinking it's going to be better than anything Sony's PlayStation 3 could put out in the market. OH GREAT GOING MICROSOFT. :} Just stick to operating system's. You haven't even mastered those yet.
Anyway, I bought a 60GB PS3 the other day and I'm loving it. Folklore is an awesome game and I encourage anyone who hasn't played it to try it, if you're remotely interested in RPG / Adventure games of course.
I've played my friends 360 for quite awhile and I just couldn't get used to it, the controller is god awful. Okay, okay enough ranting. Apologies.
Good job with the 40GB's though Sony. :}
not to mention the new commercials for ps3 in NA are pretty tight and they say starting at $399 now, i bet sales will shoot because of that too.
AND PIGS MIGHT FLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COULD ONE OF THOSE PIGS CRASH LAND ON MY 60 GIG PS3 AND TAKE MY 5 GAMES WITH IT,,, THE BLACK WASTE OF SPACE. MASS EFFECTS GONNA KILL YA!!!! SO LONG SIXASIS???? WHATEVER
For the love of random chance...i named three games because i didn't want to go on for ages...
I bought my PS3 before i got my 360, i spent a long time thinking that the controller was crap but extended play has led me to believe that the analogue stick being under the thumb rather than off to the middle of the controller is a better set up however the PS controller is still tops for certain types of game...
With regards to games, I've got and owned a fair number of games in my lifetime kid and believe me when I say that I only names them because they were the first to spring to mind. Halo, Gears, Forza, PGR, Dead Rising, Two Worlds, Lost Planet, Bioshock to name but a few are all spectacular games (well...not so much PGR4...that was a let down). I enjoyed playing and finishing Stranglehold before it even launched on the PS3 and the same goes for Juiced 2.
Having said all that, I'm looking forward to Uncharted, MGS4, FFXIII, White Knight Story on the PS3 and I love Warhawk, Resistance, Motorstorm, Ninjs Gaiden Sigma, Eye of Judgment and GTHD. Heavenly Sword was good but a little to short for my tastes...i rented it out to decide if it was worth buying and I finished it...it looked good and played quite well but still...not quite spectacular yet.
All in all, i'm rooting for the PS3 but you gotta understand and admit that, as a games console, the 360 is bad and it does have a rat of good games.
Oh and Mass Effect on PS3? it's a rumour started because EA bought out Bioware...it's never been in development for the PS3 and if it did come out it would probably be in a year or two when it's already old news...
I want some spanking games from Sony and the third partes that take advantage of the inherent power of the PS3...not cast offs of games that have been out elsewhere for ages...lost planet on PS3? i'll pass...Unreal Tournament...sign me up if it's out this year...Stop all the fanboy acts and get yourselves to a place where you can respect the game develpopers who put heart and soul into their games to drive the industry onwards and upwards surpassing each game with a better one...who cares what machine it's on...if Twilight Princess hadn't come out on the Gamecube I would have bought a Wii...says it all really...i play games for the games, not for the machines.
JD, in your last post you said Xbox has a "Raftload" of games, while the PS3 only has a few. I simply pointed out that Xbox "is" Halo, and Gears. That is what its known for. Mass Effect I mentioned was a possibility, either way you can't name off Lost Planet cuz its PS3 too, and Bioshock and Gears is out on PC and better on the PC. So that leaves Xbox with.. what? Halo and Beach Vollyball. So dunno where you get this "Raftload" from, as I already pointed out PS3 is killing Xbox in exclusives "only" too that console and would be considered having a ****load by your standards.
Its Happening slowly but surely Xbox faces its doom. I Have always thought that xbox 3shi??y was nothing but glorofied piece of junk and it is.The way i see it Is That eventually they will hit a brick-wall and get crushed to pieces and they will never recover because if they loose this gen war they will have virtually 0 chance for the next one
Simply, not going to happen when you can get an Xbox360 for $280 & have more AAA titles than you could play this year.
I have to go with JD-82. The 360 is just a monster right now with great games not even including the wave of XBLA games. Yes, the tide could turn but 1 little bleep in the UK isn't going to do it.
I play mostly 360 all the time for 3 main reasons...
1. The games look better on 360. Say what you want but every game or demo that was released on both systems always looks better on 360. I can't help it if developers aren't taking advantage of the PS3 ver. The fact remains, I've compared both.
2. XBL is years ahead of PSN.
3. Mostly all my friends have a 360.
This is not meant to start a console flame war I'm just stating why "I" play games on 360 while my PS3 gets limited playtime. And if I'm like this, many more are as well.
I am pulling for PS3 regardless of what you think. I want to buy some great games for it. I will continue to buy the best Version of multiplatform games. I also really liked RFOM & I would like to buy R&C after the big drop of games has slowed a little. Also, I can't wait for Haze.
I don't know how long the 360 can crank out a great variety of games. I think they got a headstart & are currently rolling hard.
I think the PS3 40GB will definately drive sales & the offering of games is picking up so things are looking much better.
But to say the 360 is doom & gloom is a little outrageous.
For me Xbox 360 isn't a valid option because I think it competes too much with the PC and without question the PC is vastly superior. I chose the PC and I'm very very happy and I find the selection of games to be of excellent quality and in abundance.
Having said that, had I not been a PSX and PS2 user in the past - maybe I would have taken the Xbox 360 over the PS3 because it offers a much bigger and better selection of games and I do admit that so far the capabilities of both consoles more or less seem quite closely matched. Lack of reliability is a big turn off – so if MS wants to lure me across they need to really fix that problem first.
But because I have well over 200 PSX titles and over 300 PS2 titles I thought it would make sense for me to go with the PS3 and I lined up and purchased mine on the release night. Am I happy?... not entirely – no. I'm somewhat let down. Limited BC really pissed me off as i had no warning prior to purchase so I felt cheated when some of my games did not work properly. As for PS3 games it's been a pretty lame year in my opinion and I've thought of dumping Playstation more than once. This time around Sony isn't the be all and end all for me but I do hope that over time the PS3 will come good. Ive sunk a lot of money into it so far and so I should give it one more year to catch up.
The best way for Sony to do this is to make sure devs release many innovative, fun games as PS3 exclusives or atleast with better features or enhancements than Xbox 360. A lot of my PS2 games where RPG's so a few ultra high quality RPG's & Action Adventures would be welcomed - for me more so than FPS as my PC rules that genre. I also enjoyed playing Frequency, Amplitude, Rez, Guitaroo Man, etc... so I'd like to see Sony do a lot of exclusive music & rythm games too. In short the best way for Sony to make a come back is not with advertising gimmicks, not with hype, not with arrogance, not with bluray movies ... but with excellent games. Also, if they released a model with full BC in the Australia Id dump mine and buy the new one in a flash...
War is not yet over.
Once MGS4,HOME,KillZone2,LittleBigPlanet,UT3,and GTA4 come out...sony will dominate the xbox in exclusives....halo is gone, so is gears of war, and all they got now is mass effect and bioshock which sucks...comming fall next year ps3 will dominate th eplaying feild
