PS3/360 price cut expected this holiday, says Pachter

Posted on May 21st, 2008 at 07:00 EDT

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has said that he expects further price cuts to be made this holiday season for both Sony and Microsoft’s latest home consoles.

Speaking at the recent Electronic Gaming Summit, Pachter forecast a price reduction of USD 50 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, estimating industry growth this year at approximately 19 per cent in North America and 20 per cent in Europe.

The analyst added that he expects growth in the US next year to reach only 16 per cent and 18 per cent in Europe unless both console receive further price cuts.

Furthermore, he forecast growth to decline to around 10 per cent by 2011; in which case the industry will flatline unless a new console is released.

I have no issues with the site atm. Try using Firefox with the NoScript plug-in. ;)

As for the article, what ever happened to the other guy claiming there will be no price cuts this year?.

So at the end of the day, there is sither going to be a price drop...or there isn't.

JeeGolly...and we needed analysts to tell us this?

motzo its your problem..get better protection, I've never had a single popup for this site

As for the price cut..i'd say it'll still hurt the PS3 if the 360 keeps lowering it's price too !!

I've also had problems, like for not long ago, a RealPlay messagethingy appeared everytime I entered the frontpage and crashed my computer (had to go directly to /news.php D: ) and right now the frontpage is really hard on my computer... Well, no matter I will also still visit the site, I just hope you guys can do something about it :D

------

It would be nice with another price cut for the people who haven't moved on yet (a lot of people are just buying PS2s now!!) . Though it's funny to see 360s at the same price as a Wii... lol

I have problems every great once in while but nothing that would cause me to stop coming here. @Gunteng - I agree with you on Firefox an d NoScript. Once you have it programmed you don't even need an ad blocker.

As for the article, I don't really care for patcher. I take what he has to say with a grain of salt.

Firefox is a behemoth compared to Internet Explorer 6.5 thats why Microsoft encourage us to use Internet Explorer because its rubbish heck even Winamp is 10x better than Win Media 10.5. No Pachter I think Microsoft will cut the price of the pleaseburnme. Sony won't like whats the point Playstation has always been worth the cash ps has Pachter even analysed last gen consoles or even last last gen consoles its if he trying to jump onto the bandwagon of Gaming

Everytime I go onto the PSU homepage my anti-virus software and public computers anti-virus software says there is spyware trying to save and deletes it but today there is other warnings just on the home page to do with trojans as well and a couple of times it kept trying to load up another webpage again and agian but without success. Please can PSU sort this out.

Well, I've heard differently . Some other analysts say that Sony is shifting it's position away from market share and is focusing on profitability and they don't expect a price drop in 2008 from the PS3.  If it wasn't for the PS2 and PSP, Sony would be loosing even more TONS of money.

But personally, I think that it would be in Sony's best interest to drop the price in holiday 2008. If Microsoft drops the price on the 360 in the U.S. and Sony doesn't drop the PS3's price, PS3 sales will suffer and the PS3's price needs to drop a little lower because a lot of people still aren't willing or still can't afford to pay $400-$500 for a game console.

I think that the 40GB model should be dropped to $325 and the 80GB model should be dropped to $399, but whatever the price may be when it's dropped, Sony should try to keep the price within $50 dollars of the Xbox 360's price.

The same here. Please fix your site, I love coming to it. But I've been having so many problems coming on, up until today, I couldn't stay on it for more than a minute because it would close to my explorer. And I've had a bunch of trojans lately, especially that really annoying one where bugs start coming on your screen. One more threat, and I will also have to stop coming here. Please fix this.

bring on the price cuts. We all know MS will do it first, but ow long will it take sony to follow the trend?

Not the same problem but I can't visit PSU or the forums because it drops a Trojan, causes IE to take the rest of my memory, and crashes IE6, Protowall, PeerGuardian2, and AVG, but never COMODO.  I can see a redirect for http://liveinternets.com/ie6/update.php right after it loads the poll on the front page.

Firefox seems to work fine, even though I don't like it.

---

I expect to see a price cut sooner, say late August, early September.

Sony made a comment at the beginning of this year, saying to expect a possible price drop, later on in 08'. So, you all know that means, towards the end of the year, like usual when they drop them. I expect Sony to drop the 40GB, and 80GB $100, because even Pachter said himself, that would be Sonys sweet spot.

I never even pay attention to these articles, it never makes any difference on whether there is one or not. About the viruses and stuff, I've never had the slightest problem. I use Firefox, and that's probably why. Internet Explorer honestly is just a sh1t program, don't use it

Have any of you guys upgraded to internet explorer 7?  I have to admit I have not had any problems using internet explorer.  I also ignore any message telling me to download something from the top of the page.
