As the PlayStation Portable enters its fourth year on the market in the US, Sony’s John Koller insists that the handheld console still has a long life ahead of it, describing it as an evolving, “ten year project.”
Koller, Senior Marketing Manager for PSP, told IGN that the handheld device would evolve over time through firmware updates, and would later continue to expand through hardware updates.
“We've talked about the PSP being a 10 year product,” he said, “but a 10 year product in the continued... how can I put this... in the continued lifecycle, so we obviously had the 1000, we have the 2000, so the PSP as it was first launched in March 2005 isn't going to the be the PSP that it ends up as in 10 years, but it will still be a very strong portable gaming device that is centered in gaming and has a lot of multi-functional features.”
“We look at it just like our console business being a 10 year cycle, but we do see iterations as we go along to really adjust to the market. What we've done is the 2000 series adjusted to the market in terms of making it more portable. What we're seeing now, at least in the near- to mid-term, is going to be firmware updates that add features and other functions that the consumer's asked for.”
Koller added that the release of the PSP 2000 sparked “an incredible jump in demand - so much so that we really had a worldwide demand bump that was very, very significant and allowed us to increase our total shipments worldwide… In North America, we saw an 85% jump since the price drop in April of last year and we've really seen a wide variety of casual gamers get into the PSP market.”

Makes sense, I mean how many revisions did the Gameboy advance go through in it's life time before the DS destroyed it?
I bought the PSP when it was first release, and the first year I played games on it. But since I traveling alot now I used it mainely for movies and the internet (Except to play GOW). Now with Skpe and soon to have GPS on it It has become an overall must have device.
Its a great device I wont lie.... I owned a DS for 2 years PSP for 3 but nothing will convince me to buy either one of them again untill the new models come out.... look at it this way.... Handhelds used to be a 4-6 year thing.... No way can they make it a 10 year. I was alive when the first hand held black and white game(fat)boy came out, its been 18 years and what they have 6-7 versions of gameboys.... I'm just saying i'll wait for PSP2 or DS2 or TS (TriScreen) for all we know....

Well the slim is briliant. I sold my fat PSP and the differences in speed and loading ar very noticable. I am satisfied with this change that they made and I think the hardware additions were a great idea.
Yeah....but does it have a hard drive? I won't buy it until it can compete with IPod and Zune. Those memory sticks are a rip-off, and they don't have enough space.
It's definitely an awesome handheld entertainment device,it's music quality is really nice, the games are AWESOME,and the internet radio is definitely great(if you have a wireless internet connection that is,but most ppl do),and GOW is just OUT OF THIS WORLD AWESOME,anyone who has ever doubted the psp's hardware capabilities has to play this game. It's (as mentioned b4) AWESOME,the lighting, the gameplay, the boss fights, the intercourse mini game(?),and did i mention it has the most immersive storyline i've ever seen?
I need to get a PSP2000 so I can throw custom firmware on the fat one. I like the weight of the original PSP but the performance boost is too hard to ignore.

And Memory Sticks are a rip-off but so are all memory cards. I'm not complaining because I've bought three 8GB sticks off eBay for $50 each and they all work perfectly.
I never realized how great the PSP was until I got one for X-mas. I never really looked through PSP news, and always skipped the PSP reviews when looking through magazines. But once I got one in my hands I realized how awesome it is. I love that it has the same XMB as the PS3, I love the themes, and there are so many games on it that would love to play on a handheld that I wouldn't normally play on a home console. I really don't understand why people talk so badly about it, and say the DS has better and more games. I can list so many games I would want to play on the PSP including MGS P Ops, FF7 CC, Power Stone collection, Tekken Dark Resurrection, Burnout, The Warriors, GTA, SF Alpha, Killzone, Patapon, God of War, Gurumin, Dead Head Fred, Syphon Filter, Socom, Battlefront and the list goes on.
I sold my first PSP (1000 series) not long after I bought it because I wasn't really happy with it. Last September I bought the new 2000 series and am really happy with it. Jeanne D'Arc, God of War, Valkyrie Profile, Castlevania, Crysis Core, etc. The PSP really is the trusty handheld companion for all gamers, movie watchers, and music lovers. A great value for a great price. Another Sony homerun. PS3, it's in the box!!!
i like my psp a whole lot, but what this guy is saying is pure bullshi?. a 10 yr lifespan means that your psp should be able to funtion for that lenght of time. if for some reason sony comes out with a new apps or software that the original psp can't handle, that when the life span of that unit is over. You can correct me if i'm wrong, the psp 1000 can't use skype or even watch certain flash media over the web, so i would say the 1000 series life span is over and the 2000 has just began. so the psp name brand may have a life span of 10 yrs, but the actual unit itself doesn't.
PSP is awesome. I love mine and i still have a 1000 series. This is good to hear as now ill wait for another PSP re-release and just hold onto my original. I have had it for a long time (within half a year of launch) and its still in great condition.
