Elsewhere, the game also excelled in rudimentary gameplay mechanics such as puzzles and combat; riddles progressively increased in difficulty and became more varied as the player got through the game, while combat was aided in the ability to strafe left or right, allowing for a greater degree of mobility when compared to the heavily criticised “tank controls” found in Resident Evil. While the gameplay remained solid overall, Silent Hill’s main accomplishment was ultimately down to its ability to inject fear into the player in ways not seen before, earning itself as the reputation as one of the most terrifying videogames ever created.
What would a PS3 remake add?
While aesthetics should typically come second to gameplay, one cannot deny the impact that a PS3-enhanced visual overhaul would bring to a remake of Konami’s original horror masterpiece. With the power of the PS3 on hand, Team Silent’s collection of twisted minds would be able to craft an intricate, blood-splattered world filled to the brim with macabre architecture not unlike of those displayed in the 2006 film adaptation. With the forthcoming Silent Hill V already looking particularly impressive, its not hard to imagine the additions a PS3 remake of the original could offer; HDR lighting, real-time physics, meticulously rendered creatures and characters along with improved aural presentation, all working cohesively as one to bring an unprecedented level of fear.

The battle system could also be tweaked to offer a more fluid approach to combat, offering full analogue control (a feature that was lacking in the original, requiring a player to push another button to make the character “run”), improved dodge mechanisms and a more responsive auto-aiming system. In fact, providing the developers remain true to the original’s survival horror routes, it would be intriguing to see how Konami could implement the over-the-shoulder viewpoint originally proposed for the PSP title, Silent Hill Origins.
I’d also like to see the addition of new cut scenes and dialogue to flesh out and link together the games plot with Origins, along with some unlockable’s such as extra costumes, weapons and game modes (perhaps a PS3-exclusive mini-game covering Officer Bennett’s path through the game, much like that of Maria’s for Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams?)
Keep an eye out for more of our PSU Champions features in the near future.

never played silent hill.. maybe i should try one of em sometime
Great article. Silent Hill is a great game.
I played this game with my buddy on his ps1 about 9 years ago. Was my first time i've ever heard of the game, and it was scary! Really enjoyed the story, puzzles, monsters and the town of silent hill. Most defintely going to play the new version on ps3
Silent hill is one of the most atmospheric series around! Love it!
psn id: gingo..... this was one scary game imo and it put me off horror games for life lol
silent hill = best horror series ever
TBH I never finished this game because I actually felt sick going through it lol. It was the first time horror in a game like this caused me to be that sick. =P
fatal frame is much scaryer but this is shurly in the best
I know this may be a small point to some, but I really hope in the next release of the game, they will have a separate control to reduce the sound volume of the main characters foot steps. When I played the previous version of the game though my surround sound setup, it was like chinese water torture listening to those foot steps - drove me half crazy! There was a setting that did reduce their volume, but that also reduced the atmospheric sounds too which were essential to the game. annnyywaaayy... enough of my ranting, I'll still be looking forward to this next super scary installment! :)
lol chilled breeze
This was the best feature I've read in a while Mike.
Yeah, I'm totally biased, but I think it is better than mine :).
This game will kick ass
that was a good read. i just love their more intellegent take on fear. just like the article said. it is all on a phsycological level. and what's funny is you don't notice it until somebody tells you. as if the game wasn't doing it on purpose. it's crazy. lol.
I really don't want it to be remade,i mean it's scary enough on a psx,who knows how horrific it'll become on the shiny powerbeast.lol
Havn't gone through SH, perhaps I will someday. Have played SH2, 3 and 4 and loved them... as well as loved the movie.
Silent Hill is one of my all time favourite Horror series alongside Resident Evil... The two are completely different from each other but both throws everything at you...
Silent Hill however has that certain intenseness about it and I've played all of them so far except for SHO and then Silent Hill 5 obviously.... But I will never (EVER) forget the first time that freakin' siren goes off in the original Silent Hill and everything just goes to S*** That was the moment I knew Silent Hill will leave an impression on me... But never thought i could play a game that was mentally F***** up as that.... Been hooked ever since.
