PSU's Holiday Buyers Guide: Blu-ray

Posted on December 5th, 2007 at 08:35 EDT

Continuing the Holiday Buyers Guide, PSU.com takes a look at some of the best Blu-ray titles of the year. When compiling our list we looked at the following: video quality, sound quality, HD features, and the movie itself. So if you own a PlayStation 3 or a stand-alone Blu-ray player, here are some titles you may want to look at for either yourself or friends/family.

5. Spider-man Trilogy Set
Price: $62.95

General:

Available now in stores, the Spider-Man Blu-ray Trilogy set includes all three Spider-Man titles, as well as the bonus content from the single release of Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray. Displayed in 1080p (MPEG-4), and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround sound, this is the best way to enjoy the Spider-Man series.

4. Disney's Ratatouille and Cars
Price: $23.95 each

General:

Each sold separately; both are true treasures and are equal when it comes to our list. If you are looking to get a movie for your kids, either of these will do. Created by Pixar, both films are renowned for their visual quality on Blu-ray displaying in 1080p (MPEG-4) resolution. Cars includes BD-Java features such as picture in picture play and interactive games, such as "Car Finder." Ratatouille includes features such as high def versions of Pixar short films like "Lifted" and "Your Friend the Rat."

3. Planet Earth Complete Series:
Price: $66.95

General:

Five years, seven continents, and a USD 25 million budget...Planet Earth is one of the most innovative and inspiring nature documentaries ever created. Beautiful colors, majestic landscapes, and footage of animals caught on film in a way never seen before, Planet Earth is undoubtedly a must have this holiday season.

2. Pirates of the Caribbean Collection (Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Man's Chest, and At World's End)
Price: $23.95 each

General:

Once again another trilogy makes it on our list; however, presently, you will have to buy each title separately. Even then, this collection of epic films, based off the Disney theme ride of the same name is worth every cent. Each film is a 2-disc set with copious amounts of features and bonus material that will have you occupied hours after the movies are over. All three movies rank high in both video quality (1080p, MPEG-4) and sound (PCM 5.1 Surround) making them one of the best collections to own.

1. Harry Potter Limited Edition Gift Set (Harry Potter 1-5)
Price: $104.95
Release date: December 11th, 2007

General:

What will probably be the best Blu-ray collection yet, Warner Bros. will be releasing a 7 disc box set which includes all five Harry Potter films and two bonus discs including plenty of bonus content. The movies will run at 1080p resolutions (VC1 video codec...best video quality) and will output both PCM 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. If you are looking for one movie to really make your HDTV shine, look no further...cause you'll have five! This is a must buy, not only for the visual quality, HD features, and sound, but the films themselves provide the ultimate resource in family viewing.

Every one of those is a definite must buy for me. I'm gonna hold off on the Harry Potter until the last two movies, though, when they release one big set for them.

not for nothing, but on what grounds were these movies picked/ ranked?  was it just the editor who picked these?  cause tho i agree with most the films there, i would have them re-ordered for sure..
