BIA: Hell's Highway 'Realism' trailerWith Christmas right around the corner, PSU.com wanted to warn our readers of the PS3 games that may look promising as great holiday gifts but are in fact a waste of money. In our opinion, these are the titles that look great on the outside, but are deceiving to what lays within. The following list of titles does not include movie tie-ins, as we’re all too well aware of the “quality” involved with such games. With that said, let us begin…

Synopsis:
From Software’s mech franchise continues with Armored Core 4 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, placing gamers in a futuristic, alternative universe where large-scale corporations now rule over the war-torn nations of Earth. In addition to the added graphical prowess of next-generation hardware, Armored Core 4 features 30 missions to blast through and allows for up to eight players to battle it out in an all-new multiplayer mode.
Reality:
Where does Armored Core 4 fall short? Well, just about in every category. To start off, the PS3 version suffers from being just a bad port. Such things as frame rate drop to pop up textures and horrible shading all make Armored Core 4 quite sore on the eyes. Also, with no one playing online and absolutely no replay value what-so-ever in the single player campaign, players will become bored with this title within hours. If you are looking for a decent title with weapon wielding mechs, just wait for Capcom's Lost Planet to hit early 2008.
4. Tony Hawks Proving Grounds

Synopsis:
The ninth instalment in the popular skating series, Tony Hawks Proving Ground incorporates three different skater classes for players to choose from; Rigger, Hardcore and Career, each containing their own set of unique abilities to discover. Set over three cities situated along the East coast of the United States, Proving Grounds includes a fully functional video editor, updated multiplayer and full customization options, allowing you to tweak your skater from the ground up in any manner you see fit.
Reality:
Tony Hawk's Proving Ground isn't as bad as you might think. It's a decent compilation of features from past Hawk titles – the key word being past. You've essentially played this game before. Plus, the animation and physics make you gag after playing the masterpiece that was EA's skate. While nailing custom tricks is a blast, buying a game for a single feature is almost as dumb as trying to play Super Mario Galaxy on the SNES. Almost. Pick up EA's skate to experience true innovation.
3. Juiced 2

Synopsis:
The sequel to original 2005 release, Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights takes user customization to the next level, allowing players to design their very own racer, in addition to improving on the original’s car modification options. Featuring half a dozen iconic cities to race in, online multiplayer and lengthy career mode, Juiced 2 also introduces a brand new element known as Driver DNA, allowing players to download one another’s unique driving statistics and compete against them in the Driver DNA Lab.
Reality:
Juiced 2 sucked so hard that we shut it off, broke the disc in two, and burned the remains before we finished the first lap. Wondering why? The trailers made it out to be a fast-paced drifting extravaganza. What we got was a broken pile of junk whose engine simply stuttered and died. Seriously though, the cars handle like they're 5 pounds, the driver DNA is nothing more than a gimmick, and the graphics look like they're straight out of Wii's mini-game collections. Do yourself a favor and go play Ridge Racer 7 instead.
2. Soldier of Fortune Payback

Synopsis:
The horrifically gruesome Soldier of Fortune series makes a return with developer Cauldron HQ’s latest gore fest, Soldier of Fortune: Payback. In this most recent installment, players assume the role of freelance mercenary Thomas Mason, as he ventures across the globe in ... (continued on next page)

poor poor sonic...what ever happened?
why do people care about story so dang much. remember a game with an awful story and incredibly fun gameplay that everyone loves? oh i remember. its CONTRA
Cause a good story keeps you interested. A lame one doesnt.
I have to agree with that list, Armored Core 4 was awful. I am sure glad I rented that game.
@ IRONMAIDEN
I agrre with what djrussell said, you need a good story , otherwise, why get the game?
I remember saying something about SoF Payback in a thread and somebody bit my head off. Well, I hope he comes in here and tries to slander the PSU staff for it then. I played Proving Grounds and actually thought it was "ok" but maybe that's just me.
IRONMAIDEN, back then I used game as a waste of time. Only until they gained stories did video games becaome a favorite hobby, they became interactive books which at times because of their stories made me compare to some of the greatest movies out there.
I know I wouldn't be as ig of a fan of gaming if storylines didn't evolve..... as a matter of fact if it was only about gameplay and never included a decent storyline I don't think the industry would have grown that much in the past 15 or so years.
man. thats dissappointing what ever happened to sonic. those games used to be the best but i have to admit that was the worst games i have ever played
@IRONMAIDEN
Because without a good plot, you lose interest in the game.Take POP:Sands of time, for example.Sure you awed it for it's innovative combet style, and acrobaticsand all that. But the truth is,if that game had a lame storyline,it wouldn't have recieved all the praise it did.
I never made it past the demo for AC4 because it sucked hard.
Is #1 or #5 the worst?
Oh maybe sonic does desrve to be in the worst 5 but still number 1 its not that bad
...underage beastiality? ...is that like a special fatality in mortal kombat?
@jockamo
haha, mortal kombat. good times
PES 2008 should be up there too.
i thought AC4 was pretty tight to be quite honest. Replay value on it was kind of non-existent unless you went through it on the hardest difficulty of which I have yet to do for the final mission because i get slaughtered lol. Games that could take its place could be Def Jam Icon or possibly Pirates of the Caribbean? I disliked either of those games quite a bit. Really though I just don't think AC4 should be on the list just because of how in depth you can get with your AC unit and change all the things around which would make you change your gameplay style completely from fast and evasive to tank fighting.
psn id: gingo.... good i dont have any of these games and dont plan on getting any of them either but i will be especially sure not to pick up sonic cause its sounds terrible
I don't have to read this article or even play the demos to tell these games all suck !!
Very interesting, I wonder which PSU staff/reviewer had to play these games hehe. Smell of good hate here. XD
woop i suggesed this idea :)
Fortunately it wasn't just one reporters experience...
i think Rainbow Six Vegas should of made the list.
Dont worry sonics making a comeback. Well I hope he does lol
I haven't played any of those games so I guess that is a good thing.
hmm.....i happened to like Tony Hawk's proving ground, though it wasn't popular it's still a good game to me. Not all games are going to sell great. I guess it's all based on opinion.
i remember back in the days when sonic the hedgehog was a big hit for the sega system. BOY! i used to love it
And I own none of these games. Good thing too, it seems.
Why isn't Need for Speed: Carbon on this list.. Hmmm..
And as I also say to Mario fans. MARIO IS DEAD. GETOVER IT! It's past, history. Good memories for some. It's the same with Sonic. And Spyro. Get over it, but keep the memories.
Mario's dead? What makes you say that?
armor core was fun wtf?????? the graffs were amazing!! wtf?
you better pick up sonic, i'm still giving u a chance on the Wii platform
@killercop to say Mario is dead is to say the world just blew up.
As far as sonic goes put him back on Nintendo not that I don't like Sonic but it seems that he was better there anyway.
AC4 ISNT that bad when u have nothin to do, especially playing japanese people like my friend
HAHAHAHA Lair wasn't even on the list!!! Nice, I have lair and it's not that bad, just really freakin short.
leeman, what about good multiplatform games? There are many of those, that run perfectly on the PS3 - and you don't lose 3 years of your life (and all your hair) in costantly worrying WHEN the console will die. (meaning "which month you will play no games, but instead go bash PS3 forums")
Back to exclusives, .. go back to your TWO good xbox exclusives - we have many more than that now. And we're not forced to pay online fees just to listen to middleschoolers screaming like little girls.
Tsk... didn't follow the golden rule "leave trolls unfed and they die a lonely death"
And back to the topic, I agree with the list :). I was hyped-up for AC4, but when I got a HDTV, saw other HD games and played AC's demo... ugh :). I can only hope Kojima will make "Zone of the Enders 3", the previous game was a blast.
Juiced2... the cars felt like tin-cans and winning didn't feel nice. NFS:PS also felt too easy, and their physics were hilarious. I wish I could have captured several moments to show online :) . But NFS was aeons ahead of Juiced2
The THPG demo was a HD joke, and despite Neversoft's bragging on how well they captured the motion-data, every few seconds you'd see your skater and his board warp around and defy inertial equations. The textures at most places added to a conclusion: this resembles an 8-bit game lol.
and to make things even worse for soldier of fortune: payback, Activition had to remove almost all the gore to allow the game to be released in Australia
I knew Sonic was going to be on this list and I knew he was going to be number one, especially with all the bashing he has been getting; And I tried to leave it alone but thanks to you guys I can't. l know Sonic was going downhill after the Dreamcast but I didn't give up on him. Sonic The Hedghog was the first game I got for the PS3 and I was really excited about it, and I still enjoy playing it today. Remeber guys, Sonic strayed away from home, which has made him quite rusty but he's still here. l'm not trying to make anyone love Sonic or anything; all I'm saying is don't give up on someone who is cooler ... and hotter than Mario. ( And if we didn't give up on sega we would have been playing the ultimate system right now, THE SEGA REALCAST, with way too much features to even begin describing ). This is a brand new age of gaming, and I think that once my boy Sonic gets used to it, he'll be number one again, and this time for good. He'll be faster and better than ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Both Sonic and Juiced 2 were straight up garbage, especially Sonic,I dunno about the rest though.
Me not owning any of these games ftw! :D
Good article , PSU
tony hawk was horrible compared to skate.
glad someone somewhat official finnaly admited it.
I disagree about AC4 being a bad port, because it actually came out to PS3 before 360 in Japan, then it was ported to 360. So in reality, the game was built on the PS3. And from what I played in both versions, they were both the same (except the PS3 version lacked voice chat).
i totaly agree with this list (apart from Sonic because of the game play and i like playing as silver) especially with Juiced 2 i've never deleted a demo so quick all these games sound terible, oh and THPG was actually worse than playing THP8 or THAW for that matter, The one thing that annoys me most about sonic though is defenately the loading times especialy when you do a town mission, cos you go up to the guy, and then he says "hey" then you select yes, then it loads for 5 minutes, then he says "hey" again to tell you to start and then it loads again! and also the speed runs looked really cool its when you actually play them that you realise you have no controll over him, and why does sonic run so slow? and why are the videos better looking than the game and continously lagging? if you ask me this is one game that desperatley needs real time.
the soldier of fortune games was never a killer franchise but if you compare to the first one ( which i finished 5 times ) it doesn't look that bad to me, i played the darkness demo and didn't like it and look at all the hype it got, sof has always been about gore and ripping body parts off, this is why i play sof coz no other game has this much detail when it comes to gore.
omg omg omg G.O.G you should be sonic fan like me. anyway
sonic is the best and sega will release sonic on ps3 (again) and i hope they dont make it bad cause i love sonic
tony hawk wasn't that horrible. i played the demo and thought it was actually pretty good. i dunno....to me the last good tony hawk was THUG. then when THUG 2 came out it started to go a little downhill. maybe not to some people. to some people THUG 2 was still great but, not to me. oh well.
and SKATE sucks. i don't want realism in a skating game. that's just not fun.
I'm really starting to lose faith in you guys with the rampant typos and inaccurate info that keeps getting posted.... just trying to be constructive. Firefox will automatically tell you when you typed something wrong too btw, then again 'Proving GroundS' is a different story...
Never played any of these games and never will thanx to this review.
I've been reading up on PS3 news all day this system is about to drop jaws all year with its releases possible price cuts and a possible redesign looming late in the year or the beginning of 2009. Also yes the PS3 has to share releases like Devil May Cry 4 and such, but here is we as PS3 owners can still lord it over the 360 fans. The games that were Sony exclusives before that come out on your system a few months later were DESIGNED on the PS3 first. Which means it is the system it was intended and therefore will run differently on the 360 possibly slower and at a lower resolution. Games to name Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, God of War 3, Motor Storm 2, Unreal III which just came out. Future Ace Combat titles, Final Fantasy XIII, Resistance 2, Future Gundam games, Sonic deserves another chance I believe. The PS3 has hardware thats hardly been used yet holy crap I almost forgot Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and the eventual full release of GRan Turismo 5. No Xbots don't compare GT5 to any Forza game you might be getting its nowhere near Polyphony Digitals masterpiece in driving simulation. Metal Gear Solid 4 may be the last we see of our favorite characters storyline, but like a previous poster said Zone of the Enders 3 is a big possibility and I'm telling you right now Xbox 360 doesn't even have anything Comparable to Zone of the Enders 2. That game beat out any Armored Core game I've ever played and I've played Armored Core since it first came out on PS One a PS3 version of Zone of the Enders would make Xbots weep. Ladies and Gentlemen hold your applause Sony is like a great magician. In 2006 we were teased with The Pledge the magician tells you what he'll do and what to expect. In 2007 we were pulled along with The Turn given just a little bit more and left waiting for what is next. In 2008 Sony will reveal The Prestige of its consoles performance all will be amazed and watch in awe be prepared ladies and gentlemen an encore is waiting.
