Phil Harrison defends Sony on Sixaxis

Posted on September 30th, 2007 at 16:37 EDT

A lot of people may believe that Sony is forcing developers to implement the PlayStation 3’s Sixaxis tilt feature. Most recently, it has been argued that Sony forced Lair producer, Factor 5, to add the motion control in the game. However, a recent statement by Sony’s corporate executive, Phil Harrison, defends Sony by saying that Sixaxis is actually something that is left up to the developer to decide if it falls into the grand scheme of what they are trying to do with their title in development.

"Motion control was definitely not mandated by us. We've always said all along that the use of the Sixaxis is something that should be decided by the developer in tune with their creative vision for the game, so it's not something we would mandate."

Some would believe that Lair is a prime example of what can happen when Sixaxis implementation goes bad. So to counter that, many developers now offer the option to turn off tilt controls and replace them with the analog movement such as in Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction.

Am I the only person who thinks Lair is a great videogame?? I mean sure, the controls can be a little strange and frustrating at times, but as soon as you get the gist of things it's a great game!

lair is fun but my only problem was targeting and the camera was often time whacky and then when you want do dash it does a 180 instead and vice versa but otherwise i loved the game.

You dont have to use SIXAXIS for Lair.  Remember the whole  'LAIR WORKZ ON PSP!!!11!!OMGZOR'  threads.

Sixaxis is probably one of the best features put on PS3 games. I can't imagine why any game developer would pass up the opportunity to use it in their games. Sixaxis is one of the foundations of Next-Gen gaming.

WHO!? Who thinks Sony forced motion control on Factor 5?? The President of F5 said in an interview that he was the one who asked SONY for it!

Lair actually gets easier after playing the shooting stages in Heavenly sword. Seriously all it takes is practice.

Am I the only one to catch that? Developers were offering this option before. Motorstorm comes to mind. Warhawk and heavenly sword as well. The decision to remove the players option lies with factor five alone. And it is quite possible the game is balanced with motion in mind. It seems to me that the game would have been a puchover If I had used the sticks.

I find that Funny because Majority of the ppl who actaully gave lair a chance actaully ended up liking the game and spent time to learn the controls =/

and even some of my friends regret renting it cause then they ended up having to buy it xD

but i really wanna be sitting next to the reviwers who gave lair a 4...

cause i wanna see how they played it cause the only real control problem that everyone has is the 180 turn =/

wow for a true gamer, you should be able to play any game with any controll scheme, I tend to not have a problem with the way control schemes are handled by developers. Lair is a great game and the conrtols feel perfect for me there weere times i had to adjust because i wasn't quite use to it yet but it worked out fine. I'm tired of these non skilled gamers giving lair a hard time because their not competent enough to adjust to six axis. Stop being so primitive to the old ways of the analog sticks.

wow i didnt know that many people liked lair, i was waiting ever so patiently all year for lair, but then i saw it got revied as a 4.3 or w/e. so it turned me off. who knows, i might acually end up picking alir up after all. Also i like the bonus gameplay the sixaxis gives you, but for some games tunring it off is a good idea, because not all people like it.

true not all people may like it but let them be the judge of that. I hate these reviewers that review games. Lair gets a 4.5 from game spot, and Heavenly Sword gets a 6.0 from IGN?!! What the H. E. double hockey sticks lol cmon i've played both and yeah there were flaws but not enough to drop it to an average score. If thats the case then Halo should get an 8.0 because it exactly like Halo 2 with no new gaming experience and slight enhanced gfx, but dont take my word for it. all im saying is be fair on the gaming scores so that way you wont rob people of playing some amazing games.

since im just a catual gamer and not a hardcore gamer i really have had a hard time with this game i only play it 20minutes and i just give up on it .. controlls are just to frustrating ..  so i guess i didnt like it.

Games are fun W/O six-axis. I wonder if those same people are pitchin a fit at Nintendo for forcing their Wii Titles to use the Wiimote instead of a classic controller? you never hear anything about that ey.

lol it would help alot if i knew hwo to hold the sixaxis properly i can never work out weather its meant to be horizontal and turned this way or that way you know some people hold contorlers differntly to others

Sony wouldn't force motion control as such, given the the time constraint I think it was understandable that not all games using sixaxis will able to fully make use of it...yet. Now the question is whether the lessons learned from Lair of how to use the SIXAXIS in more ways then one can be done again, this time without mixed reviews by people using the controls properly and not being frustrated during gameplay.

@ Naucious23 - Dude...you need to grow a brain stem or something, you're calling people that can't adjust to using the sixaxis "non skilled"??? you're outta your head man...I've been gaming since I was a kid, i used to write games for my old Atari and Commodore but even so, the motion contral that has been implemented into the games so for has been lazy, un responsive and all in all pretty poor.  Having said that, if the time was taken it could possibly turn into something quite intuitive but at the moment the above statement stands.

Think about it for a second (take your Sony fanboy hat off, it'll help your brain breathe a little), When analogue sticks were brought into play (Nintendo - N64) they were regarded as terrible to use and people thought that Nintendo had made a massive mistake in it's development...Can anyone honestly say now that they play games without use of the analogue sticks? Of course not...However, Motion control is something entirely different, do most gamers you know sit with the controller dead level when playing? I know I don't...half the time i'm sitting side on to the tv with my feet up talking to someone while playing a game...i don't want to be thinking about motion control when i'm chilling out and, no offence to those that enjoy it, i don't want to sit in my house waving my arms about like a loon trying to pull off a 180 turn...when that can be implemented with the flick of a stick and maybe a button push...

In the end, motion control will probably end up fairly normal in games but until it fully takes hold developers would be wise to make sure it can be turned off...even Kojima wouldn't make that mistake (i hope)...Lair looks good, probably plays quite well but i have about 18 years of gaming controls, cheats, secret levels and so on stored in my head...i don't want to have to add remembering motion controls to that yet...

Games such as loco roco could use sixaxis in 100% form , but some games that have it for a nice lengthy game would sorta be like too overdoing the motion controlls but some games can actually be pulled off using it for just fun.

wow @ JD-82 if your remember correctly with your 18 years of gaming Lair was talking about that it was only going to be based on using the motion controls so when i bought the game i knew that motion control was the only option. I'm saying to all the gamers out there who decided to buy the game knowing it was based on motion controls shouldn't complain because obviously you thought that you can conquer the controls and obviously you couldn't because you wasnt competent to know that you dont have to " Wave your arms wildly in the air" but just use the flick of your wrist which seems fairly easy to me and really dont have to keep it level while playing and talking to your buddies. Bottom line this FANBOY lol @ calling me Fanboy.......... is just a gamer stating the real if you bought the game knowing it was going to be motion control then you shouldn't complain it your not skilled doing it. All games that I have played that are six axis i admit wasn't the best but i got use to it and used it because i know their are going to be games like LAIR where analog stick wont be an option...
