PlayStation 3 Boosts Blu-ray Sales

Posted on August 8th, 2007 at 05:53 EDT

According to industry analyst GfK, 95 per cent of the market for high-definition DVD equipment in Australia is accounted for by the PlayStation 3.

Launched in March, Sony's next generation console provided a big boost to Blu-ray software sales, GfK analyst Sharane Lewis said.

The PlayStation 3 dominated the competition as 55,000 units in Australia were sold by the end of June, compared with just over 1000 units of dedicated Blu-ray players, according to GfK figures.

In comparison, total sales of HD DVD capable players, including the Xbox 360's $249 HD-DVD add-on launched in March, were under a weak 2000 units figure.

Blu-ray software was and still is averaging sales of 1500 units weekly, compared with 250 units weekly for HD DVD, Ms Lewis said.

Sony has been agressively leveraging their Playstation 3 to sell through its Blu-ray hi-definition video format, a sell that has earned Sony an edge against its competition, HD-DVD. Since launching the PS3 Sony has seen considerable gains, leaving many to wonder if the a pre-packaged HD-DVD XBox 360 would have been prudent.

I have no doubt in my mind that if the 360 had an HD-DVD player built in, that HD-DVD would be dominating the market. Looks like you screwed up Microsoft. Blu-Ray for life!

LOL, well this is just another chapter in HD-DVD History...... bye bye and Blu Ray for LIFE!!! I am Aussie born n bread and proud of it and everyone I know is going for Blu Ray, why waste money on something that is going nowhere and the best thing about Blu Ray is that it can be used as a gaming disc, unlike HD DVD thats only for Movies, lol does this mean Xbox will bring out a new Disc format of their own? Your dead to me xbox

I would never have bought bluray if it wasn't for my PS3. Now I stopped buying DVDs and *only* buy bluray. And I tell everyone I know that they should really buy bluray cause hd-dvd will die sooner or later. It is not future-proof. The same goes for Xbox360, it's already getting old.

I knew this site would be full of Sony fanboys, but you guys take it to the next level. I love my PS3, think it's good value despite what MS fanboys say, I believe in Blu-Ray over HD-DVD but XBOX does seem do be more developer friendly (Every game I pre-order seems to be delayed). That being said I just hope the PS3 continues to go from strength to strength and devs can harness its full potential.

You have to take risks to reap the rewards.  And MS is about as risky as running in a padded cell.

People arent THAT dumb - Blu-Ray is the better format without question, so its good to see sales for Sony are high and blitzing the competitor.

I don't think M$ really cares about either format. They've only added HD DVD support as a disrupter and have said as much before, touting downloadables as the future. That's the type of commitment customers and partners should expect from them. Bastards!

Who cares about Bluray its not the future anyway. (1) Upscaled DVD is so good now that the difference is definately not that big to warrant spending the money on Bluray titles. This means that the large part of the market wont rush to either standard and hence neither will build critical economies of scale. Wake me up in another ten years when they finally stop making DVD's... (2) The real future is hard drives and download services. Even Sony admits this. The companies behind these future services (think NTT, AT&T, Bell Atlantic/GTE, Time Warner, Liberty Media, News Corp etc etc...) dwarf Sony in financial terms and customer reach - The future of media distribution will be controlled by the telco's and select media companies with big investments in connectivity (3) Removable optical media has already been released at 300GB. The performance of the other technologies is also vastly superior. Most important, the media is far more durable than Bluray which if scratched - how can you buff? The coating produced by TDK cant be buffed and the thickness is not sufficient to allow for it either. (4) Two markets refuse to support either Bluray or HD DVD and the spectre of China & India (the worlds largest future markets) may go with a Chinnese developed standard in order to avoid paying Royalties.
