Take a look at Mirror's Edge's upcoming demoResearch group DFC Intelligence, has released a series of reports forecasting enormous overall growth in 2009 for the game industry and which also predicts PlayStation 3 overtaking the Xbox 360 in the console race.
Astonishingly DFC estimates the video game market will bolster to $47 billion USD by 2009, which is a 42% increase over the $33 billion the industry created in 2006.
The forecast represents video game hardware and software constituting of handhelds like PSP and DS (not mobile phones), PC games and online PC and console games.
According to the report the Xbox 360's future sales may falter. Whilst the company raised its forecast for the Wii and PlayStation 3, it lowered its forecast for Microsoft's console, predicting that the Wii will stay on top through 2008 and that the PS3's sales will move into overdrive in 2009.
"The Xbox 360 will need to build a strong base outside North America to avoid being in a fairly distant third," said DFC analyst David Cole. "We could have a situation where the Wii sells more hardware units, but by 2012 the PlayStation 3 is generating more software revenue."
DFC used three prediction models that estimates that combined cumulative worldwide sales for the three console systems will reach between 180 million to 210 million units by 2012. Last generation PS2 sold over 120 Million units alone.
However, the PC market, spurred on by the success of online games and digital distribution markets will also see growth from $4.5 billion USD in 2006 to $13 billion USD in 2012. Handheld systems and software are also strong performers and Cole predicts that "the Nintendo DS could eventually become the best selling game system ever in five years."

As long as the PS3 wipe the floor with the 360 im happy
psn id: gingo... i think ps3 will come second behind wii because that is growing i numbers so rapidly its unbelieveable but i tihnk ps3 will overtake the 360
I hope Sony pulls ahead there are tons of perks of ruling the gaming business.
360 sux, playstation RULES!!!!!!
Now can anyone say they didn't see this coming? Microsoft will always be second best because they don't take risks in order to satisfy the customer. Sony even chose to lose money on 'every' PS3 they sold because they have the kohonies to risk it for the gamers (us). Rock on Sony
Wait....I know they are talking 2009, and we are almost into 2008....but, is anyone really surprised by this? I know I'm not....this is why I (and all of us) bought this console...what I am surprised about is the fact analysts think it will take that long for the ps3 to show its true colors.
2009, huh? Thats retarded. Is that how long its going to take to release games on time and fix frame rate issues? thats like saying brtiney spears is going to have a break-out career performance next August. PS3 is the britney spears of the gaming industry.
This was the forcast all along wasn't it? Sony's machine is built to last several more years than the other two "competitors". PS3 will be competing with the next M$ and Nintendo offering for at least a couple years before we see a PS4.
to peeS3rulz, Don't compare the PS3 to that crack head. Besides the fram rate issue as been resolved, secondly good games will be out well before 09. Lastly do a spell check before u try to use someones name and look like an idiot
Sucked in Microsoft - this would be great if it happens as they can afford and deserve to take a hit. Ive never really been all that interested in Xbox from day 1 - I dont know why but it just does not appeal to me. Id rather Sega release a Dreamcast -2 than M$ release another console.
Having said that - I am becoming more and more keen on PC gaming at the top end. I picked up World in Conflict today (pre-ordered collectors edition) and are playing Bioshock - both games are sweet. I wished PC gaming would now move off Windows and on to Linux - that would be perfect. As for Wii - who cares about the sales? It is a different thing altogether - I personally dont see a Wii ever replacing a PS3 its something you would have in addition to the PS3. They dont compete in that sense.
Well if you think about it the 360 is tapped, I don't think the games will get much better, as for the PS3, devs haven't even tapped into the full power yet, the best is yet to come...
The Wii can sell billions for all I care. We all know only the PS3 and 360 are the only "Next-Gen" consoles so as long as PS3 eradicates the 360 it'll be the true leading nextgen console.
when killer app games appear the gamers will come (I haven't got a Playstation 3 yet)
2009???? thats too far away!!!
no matter how long it takes ps3 will eventually run over the 360
oh my gosh. this is old news; RIGHT SONY FANS!? XD...dude...that is the exact reason why i bought my ps3! the long term investment....most of us are high school gamers....gosh i hope there aren't little kids acting like they know the sh!t. but yea...i knew i wasn't gonna really play the ps3 until i had some time...i gradueate 2008...and it's just my luck that the ps3 came out last year. (i bought mine in may) but chea i'm ready for my investment to grow. ARE YOU GUYS READY????
vl5ion is such a donkey! What on Earth are you talking about... "Microsoft will always be second best because they don't take risks in order to satisfy the customer". Excuse me??!!! Satisfy???!!! You are joking right??? Wasn't it the original Xbox that had a hard drive for extra content, games saves, music etc? Sure satisfied me... What about Xbox Live?! What about a built in ethernet port for LAN gaming? What about support for Dolby Digital as well as DTS? What about support for HD including widescreen 480p, 720p and 1080i? No I'm not talking about the 360... I'm refering to the original Xbox! Wasn't it Sony that quickly offered a modem, then included it with the console when sales were slow? And Microsoft is the one that doesn't take risks? HA!!! Even with all the problems concerning the ring of death, Microsoft has owned up to the problem and is more than compensating for the trouble. We now have a 3 year standard warranty that covers the console in the event of problems. I consider that... "satisfying the customer"! As for Sony losing money on each PS3 built... DUHHH!!! Here's news for you genius... MICROSOFT DOES TOO!! The Wii is the rare example of a console actually making money on hardware and software this early in it's life cycle. Don't get me wrong... I'm not here to debate all the pro's and con's of the consoles... I just wanted to take you to task on the satisy and risk issue. Competition is good for the industry, I think it encourages growth and builds new ideas. I seem to be the only one that thinks Nintendo's console will lose steam very fast and eventually fall to third place in this generation of consoles. I'm not talking about tomorrow... I'm just saying that sometime soon (maybe summer next year) Wii's sales will start slowing considerably. More and more people are buying HD televisions and downloading digital content, people will soon realize they need a console that can support HD and store all their content, or at least stream it from a PC. We are talking about the Gamecube in disguise too!! Not that it was a bad console... it's just showing it's age. The motion control is great, but it will only last for a time. I think I speak for millions and millions of satisfied Xbox fans worldwide that would argue your point. Remember... it's about the games!!
Playstation needs to get way down in price before it will take off. Waiting another year or two will be too late. They really need to move fast now and put 110% effort behind PS3.
The other reason to move fast is that PS3 "Power" image is not going to sound or look as good when people are looking at Crysis and games of that calibur on PC with resolutions way past 1080p. PC rigs are all going full blown multicore (and not suedo cores like SPE) they are also going crazy with SLI graphics cards offering 3 x the GPU output of a PS3... I
Naturally not everyone is rich and can afford a PC rig. Nor is everyone technology literate or a hard core gamer to want a PC - but it does steal away some of the gloss of PS3 and a number of publishers and a portion of the users at the top end of town. With Wii holding the entry level - PS3 & Xbox360 is headed for a direct confrontation in the middle. The looser might get squeezed out. Problem here is Sony has not much cash left, whilst Microsoft dropped a Billion dollars and still reported record profits in spite of it. Microsoft has ample cash and might do something nasty to hit Sony whilst they are down. Thats why Sony needs momentum and Sony needs to land the first punch - and make it a good one.
You mean it isn't already?the DS i mean.
Don't forget we need Bleach 6: Hueco Mundo Civil War and Fairly tale 4 XD
2008 will be the year of ps3
