War torn streets in SOCOM: ConfrontationSales of Sony’s PlayStation 3 console continue to surpass those of its predecessor following increased momentum in Japan this past week, according to the latest data from Media Create.
Total PS3 sales for the period August 8 – 16 show that that next-generation console sold in the region of 21,321 units, compared to those of PS2 at 12,545. PlayStation Portable, meanwhile, continues to prove the most popular of Sony’s consoles with 32,147 units sold.
Nintendo DS leads the pack for another week, however, accumulating sales of more than 145,000, with the Wii selling slightly north of 65,000 units. The full chart can be viewed below:

I'm really glad the ps3 is doing better, but I doubt it will "dethrone" the psp by years end because of the psp slim & lite that will be coming out. This will definitely increase psp sales again.

Is 127 million people enough for you? About 300 per km² compared with the U.S. with 31 per km², Japan is full of people (all nerds). :P
the ps3 will probably start to outsell the psp when games like ff13 and mgs4 comes out those are going to be huge
We need Japan to buy all the old stock so we can get rumble and a better hard drive. We will get better pricing hopefully once all the dead inventory has been cleared. Problem is Amazon is saying PS3 sales are falling in the US and the PAL regions are paying too much for something with no games - sales are slow. Its up to Japan now.
