PlayTV receives an estimated price

Posted on August 30th, 2007 at 11:53 EDT

First revealed at the Leipzig Games Conference, PlayTV is Sony's next big innovation for PlayStation 3; a digital TV tuner that adds PVR features to the console to assist in making it the center of home entertainment.

The Official PlayStation Magazine states that while you could spend approximately GBP 60 - 100 for the Freeview receiver, PVR and Sling Box, the total cost for Sony's technology is estimated at around the GBP 70 mark.

With an attractive price point already in place, PlayTV should present an ideal purchase for European consumers looking to expand upon the capabilities of their PlayStation 3 console when the device launches this January.

Stay tuned for more information on PlayTV here at PSU as it breaks.

It probably won't be in the US until 2009 when digital TV becomes mandatory

Yea, hopefully, we will get it late 2008.  By that time we will have fully digital television.  I hope they dont wait till the last minute to switch to digital.  If they did, we would probably be looking at a early 2009 release like SolsticeZero said.

This is really good news to hear.  Now you Europeans can't complain about getting everything after us Americans.  Anyways, I can't wait for this to come out in the U.S. as well.

As far as I am aware your big 5000 dollor tv didn't come with a hard drive so to record your favourite programs you will still need this if you do not already have a dvr or prehistoric vcr ;-)

That GBP 70 mark is a bit deceptive. Don't you have to buy a PS3 for PlayTV to work. OPM aren't really comparing apples with apples there.
