Prototype (prō'tə-tīp') An original type, form, or instance serving as a basis or standard for later stages; this is exactly what Sierra and THX are hoping to establish when the game by the name of Prototype is released as the first game ever to use "Neural-THX 7.1" surround sound.
Gone are the days of 5 channels immersing you in all the bullet-dodging, engine revving you can take, the future is 7 channels and it is coming strong at gamers. This new form of surround sound adds two speakers to the rear speaker set-up allowing gamers to truly have a 360-degree listening environment for all their gaming pleasure.
"Game developers and consumers alike are recognizing the importance of
accurate surround sound to the overall game experience, and the move to 7.1 surround represents a natural evolution of game audio," said Dr. Mark Tuffy, games director at THX Ltd.
"We are thrilled to partner with Sierra and Radical Entertainment to introduce Neural-THX Surround for games. The Prototype storyline and use of surround sound elements makes it the perfect fit for 7.1 game-play."
In Prototype, the player controls the character of amnesiac Alex Mercer in New York City, with freedom similar to that of the Grand Theft Auto series and The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, all while as he works to discover the secrets of his past. A key aspect of Prototype is the 'disguise or destroy' concept, which is tied to Alex's enemy consuming and shape shifting powers. Alex can consume the bodies of those he has killed, which gives him access to their memories, their experiences, and their physical forms.
Of course this new feature found in Prototype is only compatible with Neural-THX 7.1 receivers and unless you're a big home theater junkie or were an early adopter of the technology you may be on the outside looking in.

nice, first again.
this looks kool, if you have the money to buy a new sound system and place to put all these speakers, i think i'll stick with the 5:1 for a while but it'll be interesting to see how this develops on the market.
Too bad the speaker setup probably costs over $2,000.
Interesting game. I won't be buying a new sound system for this one though
psn id: gingo... lol i'm struggling to get enough money to buy a 5.1 surround never mind a 7.1 one lol
7.1 surround sound has already been arround for years and it has never been fully accepted by the masses mainly because of one reason: the added benefit of having two extra surround speakers does not outweigh the cost of the investment for the average home theater user.
I don't know why this would be any different.
Well I sit on my game chair eating McDonalds and getting very fat. I don't care about 7.1 As long as I can hear it i'm fine with just the average sound system.
I have to disagree, I have found that sound is a large part of a game, after upgrading my system to a full 7.1 with hdmi 1.3a has changed the way I rate games, and new movies as well. It's like something is missing now when I play a game or movie without 7.1. It may not be enough to get most people to switch now, but 7.1 is the new standard, it will be harder and harder to find 5.1 receivers in the future.
wish i could afford a good 7.1 sound system like is needed to get the full affect, but until then, i'll stick with the 5.1.
I have a Denon 7.1 receiver, but I only have 3 speakers and a sub. Speakers are expensive!!! 5.1 surround sound is Awesome!! Maybe I will notice a small difference in 7.1 mode.
TBH, its going to be a good while when this thing becomes a standard like how 5 channel was (for people who even got a decent home entertainment system).
For those of us that love technology, I've already got the Sony 7.1 Surround Sound DTR reciever to exploit the Blue Ray movies when played through the PS3. The 7.1 vrs 5.1 does make a difference. And I'm all for seeing more games utilizing the 7.1 surround sound.
