Prototype to go at it alone, developer cuts multiplayer

Posted on March 31st, 2008 at 19:22 EDT

The concept behind Prototype is an intriguing one. You're Alex Mercer, a shape-shifting character who is able to assume the identity of anyone within the title's open world.

Unfortunately, it looks as if you'll remain Alex Mercer the entire time, despite the various forms you may assume. When talking to TeamXbox, Executive Producer Tim Bennison of Radical Entertainment revealed that multiplayer won't make the cut for the 2008 title.

"Naturally, with Alex’s genetically mutated shape-shifting abilities, we started to explore what would happen if he were to sub-divide into two PROTOTYPEs and what kind of multiplayer gameplay we could create around that concept," he commented. "We’ve been looking at this potential multiplayer idea much more closely as PROTOTYPE’s development has been progressing, and while it’s a great concept and gameplay bonus, our conclusion is that we won’t be able to pull it off with the same level of quality and polish that we’re aiming for with the original single player story."

Bennison then goes on to discuss how the team always visualized Prototype as a single player open world title, and as the goal is to launch in 2008, they simply can't sacrifice the time. He discusses the possibility of adding multiplayer as DLC, but that's been said time and time again and no developers have stepped up to the plate thus far. We expect that trend to continue with Prototype.

I agree, multiplayer isn't needed if the single-player game is already great.

Well, to me, that's good to hear because they can focus more on the Single Player experience. Not every game needs Online/Multiplayer play, but games that have Online/Multiplayer usually obviously sell better than games that don't have Online. But, the main reason why I play games is for the Story, I don't really care too much for Online or Multiplayer in games.

Some games don't need multiplayer to be good, like Folklore, still I'm not really convinced about buying this game yet

Hey this is fine by me... multiplayer has always been considered a bonus in my books, but if they can create a solid single-player game then thats all i'm looking for.

Good! I think some people and dev's focus too much on MP gameplay. I'd much rather have a really good single player experience than have that "dumbed down" so that the devs could spend time on fitting in a multiplayer experience. If anything I think they should stick to online co-op modes more. I like to play online with people, but not every game. I'd much prefer fewer and better titles both for MP AND SP.

Good to know. I'm with the majority on this. I don't play online, so I had to actually pass up a couple of games because their single player campaigns were more of a tutorial for online, rather than the meat of an actual game. I loved COD4, but I would never spend $60 for a single player experience that is that short. I do plan on getting it, but only when the price warrants the length of play.

If no multiplayer then Sierra should pour all their work into the single player experience.

Exactly what Alpha2 said.  Not every game needs multiplayer.  Bioshock and God of War showed this to us.

I prefer single-player campaigns above all else.  Hopefully co-op is still intact.

Woooo. Games are made to tell stories visually and interactively. If the story isn't good than it's a waste of time in making a game. Go single player!

At least they have the common sense to not do something if you arent going to do it right. Im sure they will have made the right decision in the end

Smart move, it is more important to have quality games/gameplay than simply releasing something that looks good on the first level, but soon realise it's the same throughout the whole game!  Wonder how KillZone2 will turn out as a multiplayer??  Will they "dumb down" the visual quality or be able to keep it like CoD4 has?

And can you imagine DLC MAPS???, they have claimed that each level of the game is 2gigs!!! (not saying the an empty map would take that much, but certainly more than the average shooter!)

excellent...no need to add additional content which would demortalize the essence of the game.  i am fine with just the campaign.

psn id: gingo.... some of the best games so far on ps3 have been released and didn't have multiplayer, so i think this is a good decision as long as they make the single player experience perfect
