David Reeves, the President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE), has said that the company is not planning on releasing any further hardware configurations for its PlayStation 3 console in the region.
Speaking to Videogaming247.com at the PlayStation Day event in London yesterday, Reeves commented, “I don’t know that any other hard drive configuration is even planned.”
Despite this, Reeves conceded that many consumers looking to take advantage of PlayTV will likely find the current 40GB model too restricting, and suggests that many users would want to upgrade their machine.
“I think the person that wants to be multimedia – and when we bring out PlayTV, they’re going to find that 40Gb is too small,” he said. “But it’s not proprietary. You can go out and you can just buy another hard drive and just plug it in.”
“You know, hard drives are a commodity. Sony says, ‘OK, we’ll go with 40, we’ll go with 60, we’ll go with 80,’ but Seagate, who produces hard drives, they might find that next year, for example, the cheapest hard drive is 120Gb. I’m not saying we’re launching it, but they might say, ‘We’re putting a zillion 120Gb hard drives into Vaio and Toshiba laptops,’ right? And they say, ‘That’s the cheapest one. But if you want a 40, that’s prehistoric and you’ll pay twice as much.’
That’s honestly how it is. It’s a commodity,” added Reeves.

Good to know (i think)!!! I spend a lot of cash in a launch console with Backward compatability and all and now SONY doesnt update backward compatabilty anymore so whats the point in having BC when Sony doesnt give firmware updates for it anymore??!! (Yes, I angry that Sony cashed me with 600€ for a PS3 and 2-3 months later it put the same price tag with an extra controller and 2 games, Yes, Im angry that after doint that they reduce the price to 500€ with 2 controllers and 2 games and YES I AM ANGRY they discontinued the 60Gb BCompatible PS3 in europe and now they dont give me features (better support for PS2 games) for the console I have). Oh wait...
WHERE THE HECK IS DUALSHOCK 3 in Europe????????
Thats the price we pay for adopting new technology early, it happens all the time. I do feel they shoud launch say a 160GB model though, with all the bells and whistles so that people who want the daddy of all consoles can, were as lots of people are content with the 40GB, and lets not forget people (as it says) that Sony fully support the upgrade of its HD by the user so its not really an issue.
With the drive being so easy to replace, I don't see that Sony need to release any spec other than the 40GB. I have a launch 60GB model with a few GB left. I'll be replacing it with a 320GB as soon as I have the money.
Finally Sony are sticking with what they've got, good to here.
I think SCEE need to start releasing different coloured PS3's. Japan have a million exclusive PSP's. PS3's.. Why can't Europe get some hot new stuff?
He's playing dumb, they'll come out with a new sku by years end. It's going to have Dualshock 3 and the less power hungry cell.
I may have paid more for my 60 gig but Im still loving my BC. I hope they bring it back as that is what is holding most of my friends from buying one. At the moment only 40 gig's are available.
ZZZzzzz who cares, just bring me the in-game XMB!!!
If you blow through a 60 or 80 gb drive in a year then you;re simply buying too many games or storing too much porn on your drive. I've had a 60gb since launch and I've only just now reached a point where I may need to upgrade before getting a new game. in that time the price of SATA drive had dropped a great deal. a 120gb drive at launch would have cost you well above 200 bucks now it can be had for like 80. This is what the man is saying. As the price of these drives drop, it becomes more cost effective to use the larger drive because asking for a smaller one becomes a custom request if the company dosent make them anymore in favor of larger ones. So there probably WILL be a 120gb PS3 at somepoint but just because 80gb drives will go out of style and they'll HAVE to upgrade.
