Take a look at Mirror's Edge's upcoming demoSony recently revealed the 40GB PS3 system that will release at a lower price in the UK and Europe. This new system will lack backwards compatibility with PS2 games and have less USB ports. However, another difference appears to have surfaced.
According to PSNow!, a Sony representative has stated that the system will have a matte finish, instead of the glossy black that covers every PS3 model thus far. Moreso, however, is that this new SKU will supposedly be silver, giving it a noticeable aesthetic difference.
This has yet to be confirmed, so be sure to check back for more details.

Hmm, let's see if this is true.
So it *might* be the silver colour PS3 that was first unveiled at TGS 2005? Where they shown the white/black/silver.
I think the Black PS3 will look nicer anyway, as the sliver strip stands out more. It would just sort of...blend in with the silver model.
hooray... colors makes a big diff when your playing games eh :P
would be cool if it came in a glossy white finish.
I dont like this ever came out...
I don't know about this. The 40gb model is being advertised on the Australian Playstation website and it looks the same as the 60gb model with the shiny black finish. Also on the site I noticed that all there screen shots are of the 40gb model, again the only way I could tell was because I could only see 2 USB ports not 4 and about halve of the front air vents were gone, so I doubt it. Also between you and me I think that a ps3 with a matte finish would look ugly, silver would be nice though and why not make a pink one as well. Everything else seems to have pink models these days.
great. now its going to be ugly too? just like the PSP.
The silver one was still glossy. This has officially become the PS3 version of a tard pack. I hope they dont sell one of these crap consoles so that maybe just maybe they will start listening to what people want. A price cut is one, but BC is just as important
psn id: gingo.... aw man the main thing i like about my ps3 is the glossy finish i think a matte finish would totally ruin it
Hmm, doesn't sound too good.... Glossy silver with a glossy black bar would be nicer, and will clearly state its a "basic" PS3. Though if the system specs but the Emotion Chip are the same, it's still a fit console for a gamer. 2 less USB ports and a different color doesn't make it a fan's PS3 ;-). Plus, the backwards compatibility feature and Emotion Chip don't fit a gamer, as he would probably have an old PS2 or emulator on a powerful PC/Mac '^_^.
This would be great for my other classmates to get their own PS3s :-D. I mean, they don't care about color or network capabilities.
Damn I want this silver one!
I always wanted the ps3 to be in white or silver...
A cheaper alternative's cool.. especially since they did away with the 20 gigger. but i dunno about no-backwards compatibility with PS2 games.. they should've taken other crap out but still left that in there. And a matte finsih wouldnt be tooo bad.. i like the glossy black but it might look good, who knows.
EDIT: I should also add the benifit of a matte would hide all the fingerprints and scratches. I dunno about the rest of you but I barely touch mine and it never moves - but for some reason there are prints all over it and the scratches really show (and I care for it like its my child).
I really prefer the all black PS3
I think a different color will differenciate those with the high end SKU's, an example would be the Elite for XBOX 360! With less USB ports, you could always use a USB hub, can't we?? As for backwards compatibility...not sure about everyone else, but with PAL PS2 games, most don't really work well. They're either slowwwww, crash way too many frustrating times and not all games work! I just hope these frustrations can be fixed with firmware upgrades in the very near future!!! Let's get it right, right?
Please everyone STOP ! with the "no backwards compatibility with PS2 games" Yes it will have some backward compatibility, but the games can still be fixed with firmware updates. I did some digging and the official Sony Playstation site has a page under support, that wil allow you to check your games for compatibilty issues. I own 30 PS2 games and 20 PS1 games and all of them checked out fine. Sony has said that "its up to the developers to work with us, so we can fix problems via firmware updates."
I have a ps2, so there's really no need for me to cry all day 'bout backwards compatability.
Though I have the 60GB version.
