Rumor: Sony to play 'Dress'-up?

Posted on September 11th, 2007 at 11:26 EDT

Video game blog site Kotaku is reporting on an interesting trademark filed by Sony Computer Entertainment for "Dress" as a product name.

The areas of trademark cover some odd places, such as "gymnastic instruction", however some are far more likely to be pertinent to the PlayStation 3 and possibly Home.

PROVIDING EXHIBIT SPACE OF VIRTUAL REALITY ENVIRONMENTS IN THE INTERNET FOR COMPUTER GENERATED 3-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN OF CLOTHING ON-LINE RETAIL STORE SERVICES FEATURING DOWNLOADABLE VIDEO GAME SOFTWARE, SOFTWARE FOR CREATING DRESS AND WEARS FOR VIRTUAL REALITY AVATARS, SOFTWARE USED FOR CREATING VIRTUAL REALITY AVATARS, AND SOFTWARE FOR COMPUTER GENERATED 3-DIMENSIONAL CLOTHING FOR AVATARS ENTERTAINMENT IN THE NATURE OF FASHION SHOWS

While not exactly spelling it out, this section implies a Home tie-in with whatever "Dress" may be; possibly even a program to help gamers design their own clothing for avatars. We'll keep an eye on things and report any new developments as they come.

I'm imagining some kind of work out gym in home that envolves the PS eye and your avatar, you know like a YMCA/24 Hr. fitness type of place that has you making body gestures via PS eye that is reinacted via your avatar in home, take that Wii fit, lol...

Didn't Sony say you can create you own clothes in Home anyways? So whats the point of this article?

I hope they implement Home and the ps eye with this. It would be cool to work out by using your body with the ps eye to then have your avatar in HOME, to say run on a tredmill or something. So every once in a while you will have to use your body to workout yourself plus your onlkine avatar, youll need to keep your home avatar in shape. That would be sweet.

It's no different than anything they already do in Second Life or There. Virtual communities have virtual commerce. And sony lreayd stated that this was comming to Home eventually. Hopfully they'll allow us to make furniture too.

Ahahaha. I would be willing to bet money what this is. Reread it after you've read my take.

It would seem that Sony is trying to a) Get retail stores to purchase spaces in Home and sell their clothing lines, and/or b) Distribute software (CDs?) within stores that include clothing for their stores.

I may be completely off, or I may be on to something. Either way, it would be a path for Sony to go down with Home.  What are your thoughts on my take?
