Rumour: HD-DVD to lose exclusive studio?

Posted on October 26th, 2007 at 04:17 EDT

There seems to be a seesaw effect in the high-def media player industry right now. Blu-ray, at the moment seems to be on the rise as many companies announce their exclusive loyalties to the format while on the other end of the spectrum; HD DVD appears to be achieving just the opposite.

For months now HD DVD exclusive distributor Weinstein Company, how released no new titles or announcements. This lack in activity has brought up various rumors claiming that the company is no longer backing HD DVD.

For the first six months of the year, the company has released dozens of titles including Clerks II, Lucky Number Slevin, and Scary Movie 4. Perhaps the studio is looking into other options such as the ever-expanding Blu-ray market? Who knows, but when the question was asked to the studio itself, this is all they had to say: "We aren’t commenting on our High-Def plans at this time".

Now to make things clear, that does not confirm nor deny anything. What it does mean is that Weinstein Company is probably going through some in house decisions and is not ready to come out and say anything official at this moment.

If this does mean a split between the two, then Blu-ray will continue to be seen as the dominator in the high-def industry by winning over numerous studios and support since its release in 2006.

The ONLY reason that i want HD-DVD to stay right now is so that SONY has some competition to lower there BD Player prices.. its about time.. but seriously other then that, hd-dvd can go to heIl , but i dont think this war is over just because theres an hd-dvd player out on the market for like 200$ wheres are currently the cheapest bluray is 500$ (soon to be 400$)

Umm.... you do realise that this company hasnt actually announced anything. Its a rumour caused by the fact that they have not announced any new titles to be released on HD-DVD for a while.

Here is the tip: They are not planning to release anything on Bluray either as the whole "HD" thing isnt selling - its a waist of money publishing movies in HD when both HD-DVD & Bluray combined accounts for less than 4% of movie sales.

The so -called "HD" revolution is worth a peanut. It's a non event.

Well... If Studios go to Sony before the Toshiba XBox comes out, we may have a better chance.

I understand why this is a story. The company had no comment which would mean if they were truly still behind HD-DVD there would be no need to go to the lawyers first. I don't know if anyone noticed but New Line Cinema that was once an exclusive HD-DVD backer is now releasing films on Blu-Ray. Why that didn't make news is beyond me but, again, maybe it just slipped under the radar. But if Weinstein does back out or just start supporting both camps it will be a blow to HD-DVD as one would like to think that with Paramount's loyalty other companies would follow suit. Doesn't look like that's happening. Add to the fact that even Michael Bay is saying Blu-Ray is "where the money is". PREDICTION: Transformers 1 and 2 in a special Blu-Ray pack (ala Spider-Man).

@TheCleaner, you clearly don't understand jack about marketing.  It's not about making money now, it's about gaining in so that you can be on top in the future and then make lots of money; that's how things go.

As it is a rumor, it should only be taken as such for now. The reason may perhaps be that Weintein maybe witholding a release of new HD-DVD's later on  in the year into contrast of moving towards Blu-ray. Time will tell.

I think this format war is a waste of time as Blu-Ray is dominating. As for films only coming out on one format i stick my middle finger to them! why don't they just put it on both formats.

well the Weinstein Company usually respects their directors, and directors are asking studios to use blu-ray so this rumor could hold merit.

@uncool...

They have it on one format the same dam reason they have exclusives for systems.

It defines the system/format, and if they didn't have exclusives, there would be no reason to have two systems/formats. And there will always be competitors.

yes, you need SOME competition.... imagine if MAc wasn't around....?..... or sony?.... or even nintendo.... any of these company's could just charge whatever they please....its called....SUPPLY AND DEmand..... no competition, plenty of supply.... Charge whatever they want..... still, when BLu-ray comes down from $450 to $250, then its time for the other guys(hd-dvd) to fall off..... then again guys, i remember BEtamax was much better, and looked like it woud win, then video city went VHS, and EVERYONE went VHS.... right now though, Blu-ray has blockbuster........ so im really not worried on this aspect.....

EDit...... microsft would rule the world if it wasnt for Sony, and MAc.... sadly even sony doesn't have the Software recources to make its own OS.... :(

The Cleaner is a propaganda artist on the payroll of someone we probably don't like. The Cleaners post are highly biased no matter what the news pertains to. The Cleaner is a professional troll trying to sabotage PS3 and Blu-ray, don't listen to him.

He has nothing good to say about anything.  HD sales are continuing to climb and will remain in an upward spiral. DVD took a while to truly go mainstream and it will also take some time for the conversion to HD by the masses.

Its funny how people like the cleaner continue to hang their hats on the downloadable movie format ending the hd disc runtime.  lol   It may absorb some existing marketshare of course, but if your theory ran true then On-Demand would have put Blockbuster out of business........which it didn't.  Is the same thing as downloadable content, it only aborbed alittle bit of marketshare, Blockbuster remains strong.

People still want to hold the disc!!!  Sure, we all will probably download some movie content as you described....but we will still buy discs for the foreseeable future as well.  Discs can be taken to the house, car, boat, plane, relatives house for the holidays, ect. ect.

The World is Blu and Blu-ray will survive!!!!!!!!!    So take a load off and a break from your yourself and pop in a Blu-ray movie and enjoy!!!
