The masses have been clamoring to find out if the 80GB backward compatibility would be available for their favorite titles or even work at all. Today PlayStation.com launched a compatibility checker for their new 80GB SPU.
PSU decided to look at some favorites and see what issues have come during their internal checks. Just a quick run through gives us:
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater:
"Description: Throughout gameplay, the title performs at a significantly slower than normal performance speed."
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas:
"Description: No major problems for this title."
Final Fantasy 7:
"Description: On Disc 1, when the first battle begins at the Mako Reactor, a flashing black square appears around the user’s character's pointer."
God of War II:
"Description: No major problems for this title."
Well, PSU went two for four on 100% compatible games and we hope that your favorites make the grade. It's good to see the detail and commentary of the list, but kind of nerve racking the problems facing some of our favorites. Take a look here to see if your library will keep up to your expectations.
Stay tuned to PSU for more information on the 80GB SPU's BC and future updates that will hopefully fix some of the problems.

I feel backstaped buy Sony, because of the backward compatibility for the 60GB EU PS3... and now only a half year later (EU launch), they release a 80GB Ps3 with better backward compatibility then the 60GB.... and the funny thing is that i still can't play all my Final fantasy games om my PS3.. :'(
I'm still Waiting for a better update with better BC...
no there isn't any difference at all
psn id: gingo.... the european compatablity wasn't bad but it needs a bit of an update but at least the 80 gig seems like it's half decent
"no there isn't any difference at all"
Actually this statement is completely false. The 20 and 60 gig PS3s use hardware for their backward compatibility...as I understand it they had an Emotion chip (the PS2 core) built in which is why there were virtually no compatibility problems. The 80g system, on the other hand, uses software emulation for its BC so there are going to be some issues until they fix them in patches.
Dragon-slayer87, it is the 80g owners that should feel backstabbed with shoddy emulation, not you if you have a 60g.
@ Dragon. There is a difference, the lack of EE chip in some models require the backwards compatibility of some older titles to be upgraded through firmware upgrades. Whilst the dope 60gig, which is the better one, has the EE chip. Kind of like having a PS2 in the PS3 as it will play nearly all older games.
@Razerblaze... sorry to inform you that the EU 60GB PS3 didn't came with the Emotion chip... so I still feel backstabbed....
@Dragon Ahhh I wasn't aware that the EU version was different :( I guess all that can be hoped for now is that Sony gets on the ball with updating the emulation software on a regular basis. As long as they kep updating the compatibility, it should be fine.
@Razerblaze
Yea that's what I've heard as well, the 60 GB has BETTER backwards compatibility then the new 80GB, you guys need to read the articles a bit closer :)
Of course this may be resolved with future patches. I just hope they dont start having different firmware upgrades for each SKU, that could get hairy
Does 'no major problems mean no problems at all,or that it has some minor glitches.
@Ultimate-machine.. it means some games can't be played or have some graphic glitches... can't play my Final Fantasy XII because of graphic glitches and lack.. :( even my Final fantasy II for ps1 just freezes :(
@chilledbreeze7 like I said in an earlier post, the 20gb and 60gb PS3s were equipped with PS2s Emotion Engine chip for backwards compatibility, the newer model 80gb and 60gb European PS3 cut out the EE in place of software emulation which is not nearly as compatible with older titles, though Sony will be able to issue patches to update the new software emulator in the future.
Backward compatibility should never have been compromised - we are paying enough for PS3 so I think we are entitled to better than this emulation crap. If I knew I would have to emulate Id not have purchased full retail titles... Sony are now saying they cant be bothered doing much to improve things because they want to sell us new games & not support playstations past... I feel backstabbed
