SCEA to continue focus on 40GB and 80GB PS3

Posted on January 11th, 2008 at 12:22 EDT

Yesterday we reported that Sony Computer Entertainment Japan plans to discontinue the 20GB and 60GB models, which will leave the focus only on the 40GB model in the region. Following this announcement, many have questioned Sony’s focus for Europe and North America.

While the European subsidiary of the company has yet to comment on the matter, Sony Computer Entertainment of America has confirmed that they will not realign their strategy at this moment, stating that they aim to continue their focus on the 40GB and 80GB SKUs.

A company statement reads:

"….SCEI made an announcement in reference to Japan no longer shipping the 20GB and 60GB PlayStation 3 configurations. We have already stopped shipping these in the US and have been focused on the 80GB and 40GB configurations, which are currently at retail. As we've said, we will also continue to read and evaluate market trends and communicate with consumers to determine appropriate configurations for each territory."

However, readers should not jump the gun and expect an 160GB announcement any time soon. As it currently stands, the 80GB remains the top choice with the 40GB model being the bargain deal.

I would rather have a 20gb (to a 160gb), than a 40gb (to a 160gb), since it CAN play ps2 games.

The size off the hdd isnt something that is so important! I have my 320GB I purchased from a computer store. The inportant things is everythin you cant change afterwards, like how many usb ports you have. focus on those things and dont compare the models by theirs hdd size

Just how would a 160gig HDD cost as as an assessory? Thats like saying hey I got some porn to download, leave me to my "business."

So, if you upgrade to a larger HDD...what exactly do you do with the original hard-drive?? It just becomes obsolete won't it?
