John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment (SOE), has said that the company’s PlayStation 3 console may one day boost a Massively Online Multiplayer Game (MMOG) that could rival the success of Blizzard’s World of Warcraft series.
When asked on whether or not a home console may host a MMOG that could compete with the popular series, Smedley told GameDaily, "I absolutely do [think we'll see that], and in fact I think by having a stable platform where every customer has an online capable box is a huge, huge potential advantage in building an MMO because you've already got an online userbase.”
“It's a massive advantage over the PC and we don't have to worry about graphics cards or things like that,” he continued.
“It's going to be very big. Console online gaming in general I think is going to be one of the next huge phases of growth in the online gaming space."

I don't really see the point in this article. World of Warcraft is for people with no lives, no offence but it is.
^ true
Listen, I'm no fan of WoW because it's too easy and you can solo too much of the game (so what's the point of having other people there?), but that's also the reason people love it. It's made for the laziest of players that like to kill noobs. If you made an MMoRPG that's the slightest bit challenging you are only chasing a niche market. In other words, any rival of WoW will be equally as stupid.
I think it would be possible for a console to have a W.o.W replicated game.
@ H3LiX - you also have to consider that anywher from 1/4 to a 1/3 are gold farmers living in China and other Asian countries. You can't count those as real players.
The only MMO I would be interested in playing is a GTA, COD, or Star Craft.
one thing is certain.. with a ps3.. .. you could make a epic looking mmo :p
The point is that when you have 10s of millions that have same specs and can play equality and on top of that you have home that could provide huge push, so having ps mmo compete with pc mmo wont be a dream anymore. I think they are using WoW as number of online people and not graphics and such, because WoW isn't eyecandy anymore
I think the NcSoft Projects for the ps3 could rival WoW, if they take their time and make the experiances unlike no other. WoW is fun, but it could be better.
I am a Sony fan, but man this guy isn't too smart for saying this.
I say this. Show me the MMORPG games that are currently in development for the PS3. Yes the agency is 1. Now show me another. Honestly, if this was true then we would see some early BETA stuff now for any project. Think about it... We have seen some FFXIII stuff that may not even make 2009, yet this guy talks about MMORPG games on the PS3 now with only one confirmed title in active development.
The sad thing is that Nintendo will probably be the one leading the way here. I can see a Pokemon MMORPG that, if done well could be a monster hit.
So in short I say "Show me the development/projects that have started!". Even if one started today, you are looking at late 2009 or probably 2010 before we will see it. If it is a brand new game then 2010 is perhaps pushing it a bit.
At this point, their best bet would be to pay Blizzard to port Wow to the PS3, or how about bringing FREAKING EQ, SWQ or one of the other SONY MMORPGs to the PS3!!! Until then this guy should be quet.
Again, I am a Sony fan and they do some things great, but for every two steps forward they seem to take one step back.
I want EQOA 2 for the PS3.
EQOA for PS2 was epic.
Personally, if Sony attempts at making smoething that wil rival WoW they are going to fail and lose alot of money. They are better off coming to an agreement with Blizzard to have WoW put on the PS3 in which Sony would earn a percentage of sails and they can even bundle it up with an official PS3 mouse/keyboard, but other than that. I think it will fail.
how could the ps3 rival WoW when our installbase isn't even as big as the playerbase of WoW
They should release a good MMOFPS because there isn't currently a good one on the market yet.
psn id: gingo... it would take an impressive game to pull the numbers WOW has but i agree there are too many people that play that game far too much and it leads to families splitting and peoples lifes being ruined
No thank's!! I mean the Agency that they have comming out does intrigued me a bit but I don't see myself getting wrapped up in it.
WoW is a curse on this planet! there i said it! dont get me wrong blizzard is one of my favorite if not my fav developer but seeeing what wow has done to some ppl it cant be denied! i miss the days when you could hand out with some buddis in a computer arcade and play some counter strike for a bit, now its all fat nerds bragging about how they got a level up on their paladin or whatever, i would hate to see the ps3 community turned into a bunch of zombies that only play one game like that!
@FatherOfOne
A great deal of skeptism is healthy I imagine but if you did just a little research you would have found out that other than the agency, square enix and NCsoft are still making MMO's for the PS3.
Not to leave the 360 out of the equasion, Huxley, champions online and too human are said to try to take a stab at the MMO market.
What you don't understand is that the biggest shake up that can happen to mmorpgs are console based.... action RPG's. Still play by the numbers but with a heavier focus on action and a persistant world. PC mmo's still haven't had much of that .
He is egotisical, but I hope what he says comes true.
judging from the comments of the people here, the only way for a console mmorpg to be sucessful and good would be to make it cross platform. Lets face it, no one console could pull it off on their own plus the bragging rights of the consoles fan base would be off the charts.
The problem with mmorpg is that they are really complicated and slow. Console gamers like games that they can jump right into. But in the end what do I know.
