Scott Steinberg says MGS4 is "only the beginning"

Posted on June 16th, 2008 at 03:24 EDT

Back in the early stages of this 2008, the gaming media were unanimous in their belief that the next twelve months would ultimately prove to the year of the PlayStation 3. However, with delays affecting numerous releases including PlayStation Home, the in-game XMB and Killzone 2, many observers found themselves quietly doubting as to whether or not those expectations would be met.

Fast-forward a couple of months to the release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, however, and things are looking decidedly more positive for the Sony console – and SCEA’s Vice President of Product Marketing, Scott Steinberg, is confident this is only just the start of what promises to be an auspicious year for the platform holder.

"This is only the beginning of an ongoing software avalanche for PS3 that includes titles such as LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, MotorStorm Pacific Rift and Resistance 2 that only PS3 owners will be able to exclusively enjoy,” he stated.

On top of this incredible list of exclusive games, Steinberg is also hopeful that MGS4 will facilitate wavering PS2 loyalists into making the next generation transition with the PS3.

With the fact that 75,000 MGS4 PS3 80GB bundles went flying off the shelves on release, Steinberg may not be too far off the mark, as the game – as we found out over the weekend – ultimately proved to be everything one would expect of it.

I put a comment yesterday in this post! Today, for my surprise, it was gone. Now its back again?! WT+?!

Okay, back to the topic: I hope this is only the beginning! Things dont look good after SquareEnix showed such love for X360 last week in the JRPGs department!

I really hope SONY gets a grip on exclusives policy and gives us firmware 2.40 soon. Otherwise this will be the Beginning of the End!

no lie MGS4 is definitely a start  in the right direction just wish more developers would see it that way... Imagine if more developers spent there time creating games on one console than multi plat, then we would see the true perfomance of both consoles Xbox 360 and PS3 and right now when we say exclusives Sony is winning If MGS4 looks this good imagine KZ2 lets not even think about GOW3 man.

Yes I hope this is the begining of great games because I personally took a blow when 360 will get some of the RPG first.

This is the first TRUE next gen game the world has ever seen, and it goes to show what potential the PS3 has, the 360 doesnt stand a chance.

MGS4 is making an impact for those people who cant decide which console to get. I have 3 guys at my job that took the day off and the next day just so they can get the 80gb MGS4 Bundle PS3, and after buying also GTA4 & COD4 they are glad they made the right decision.

I hope it is just the beginning and it starts getting a lot better for PS3 owners from here on in. I dont think the games he meantioned are anywhere near enough - so I seriously hope there are some good surprises (not just promisses but actual delivery) on some more good exclusive games before Christmas.

These games mentioned will push sales on the console, specially MG. I have played other games on PS3, that you can consider next gen. I think some of you people need to stop being so picky about some games that come out, or that are going to be coming out. Now, RPG;s, there not totally huge in the US, and personally, I can care less about them. WOW, Oblivion, and Final F series, really the only popular ones. Love Oblivion, only RPG worth my money. Other RPG's=BORING!!!

It's funny how MGS4 would not be possible on an Xbox 360. I think from this year forward the 360 will be left in the dust, due to hardware limitations and lack of exclusives. Sony is innovative and has the best games.

This game is definitively a PS3 seller. When I picked my copy, the bundles were already sold out (about 10) and some people were buying the 40gb unit (I counted 5) with their game. And I was just halfway in the line.

I really wish Killzone 2 was still coming out this year, but at least it gives me a great start to 2009.
