Sixaxis in Unreal Tournament 3

Posted on November 14th, 2007 at 11:32 EDT

One of the more underrated features of the PlayStation 3 has to be the Sixaxis functionality. Once developers realize the great potential in sixaxis, the PS3 console as a whole would be more welcoming for unique and innovative titles made specifically for the PS3.

Until then, PS3 owners are just going to have to settle with mediocre sixaxis functions. Then there is the issue with the keyboard. Through Blu-Tooth or USB, the PS3 will be able to connect with a keyboard, but just how seriously are developers taking it?

One item that points this out is Unreal Tournament III, for the PlayStation 3. Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic explains:

“Well, the PlayStation 3 has a lot of unique features and we try to take control of them – like with SixAxis. SixAxis can be used to steer the hoverboard or The Redeemer, but that’s it. We wanted to be very careful not to hammer this functionality in just because we could. As for PlayStation Network, we just don’t have a plan to use that right now to my knowledge but I suppose it’s possible.”

Rein also went on to mention the keyboard capability with the PS3, adding, “Well, the PlayStation 3 is a funny thing sometimes. I mean, we’ve put in this keyboard and mouse support but I don’t honestly think it’ll get used all that much. Who uses a keyboard and mouse to play on a console? You’d just use the PC version, right? It’s cool because its there if you want it, but I don’t think many people do.”

Very interesting indeed; at least Epic took the initiative to allow the PS3 to use a keyboard, something that many people ignore. While the PS3 is a console and not a PC, that does not conclude that PS3 owners would not want to use a keyboard with particular games.

As for Sixaxis, it is interesting to see that they are trying to implement motion-sensing functionality in some shape or form. While steering vehicles with Sixaxis is fun enough, it would be very appreciated if sometimes there could be more in-game usage of the function just to separate itself from other versions, like the PC or even Xbox 360.

^ FIRST - (virgin first posters)  lol

Anyways!  Keyboard and Mouse in my opinion is how the game feels it best and you get the most presion/button combinations as you can handle.  Giving you a true hardcore gamer advantages.

Why not buy it in PC?  Because my budget went out on the PS3 and not in the PC.

i know i'll get loads of crap for this but i think that SixAxis control in games has been pretty much usless so far and i've yet to see anything that wouldn't have been better and easier using a standard control method! to be honest i feel that the SixAxis is the most over rated function of the PS3 but then that just my opinion and it may change if someone puts it to good use.

Sorry, I rate this as a very POOR article.  Not to be mean but:
1st:  You say "Then there is the issue with the keyboard."... what issue?  I've never heard anything bad and you don't even mention anything bad; all you say is "how seriously are developers taking it?", that's not an issue and the same can be said of PC games.
2nd:  There is no real new information worth of an entire article; we all knew Six-Axis would be present in a small way, this "news" doesn't mean anything.
3rd:  You said it would be better if some games made more use of six-axis in-game to separate itself from other versions... am I the only one who thinks of LAIR?  Oh, btw, it failed because they over-used it in some people's point of view.

I think KB/mouse is a great option to have, especially for people who like to use KB/mouse but don't have high-end PC's

Well this article makes good and bad statements I just think it depends on what side you come from.  If you play a lot of computer games maybe u prefer pc controls (KB/Mouse).  You play a lot of console games you prefer the controller.  People have to keep in mind not every1 has a excellent gaming computer which is like 3-4x the cost of a ps3 maybe more.  Personally idc cus I play both comp and console games.  When the game comes out its just based on personal preference which I am glad epic games took the initiative to give us gamers a preference.

"While the PS3 is a console and not a PC"

not a PC?? then how is it possible that i have YLD Linux on my ps3?!?!isnt that an OS that was made to run on a PC?? plus i have swapped out my 60GB HDD to a 160GB HDD ( to take full advantage of the PC side of my ps3)

personally i will be using both KB/Mouse and Sixaxis on all the games that will have that option.

Exactly hyperplus ... This dude is living too much of a CEO lifestyle to understand most of us have to choose (if we are even that lucky) either a "gaming" PC or a console not both, Amoebalove ... you are right BUT only because no one has implimented it properly yet! I gotta say Heavenly Sword was close though.

I hate Epic. Is it just me or are they just downright comfortable with putting down the PS3? " We wanted to be very careful not to hammer this functionality in just because we could." Why the h^ll not? Why wouldnt you as a developer take full advantage of the hardware that you are given to play with?????  "As for PlayStation Network, we just don’t have a plan to use that right now to my knowledge but I suppose it’s possible." Again, straight up, full out admission of laziness. "Yeah I know they Ps3 can do far more than we at Epic can, but we don't care, because we are too stupid to figure out how to do it, and we are too busy blowing Microlimp. Hail Microlimp and refusing to innovate, w00t."

Meh we will see just how many people use the kb/mouse vs. sixaxis on the game.

Most people will agree that keyboard and mouse is best for first person shooters but so I can't see why it wouldn't be a great thing to have for consoles.

I used to play quake 3 arena on Dreamcast with keyboard and mouse and it was awesome.

Somehow it hasn't caught on because developers would have to spend additional money supporting it and also because a lot of console owners won't invest in a seperate keyboard and mouse which I can't understand because they are so cheap these days.

I'm so glad Epic is suppoprting kb and mouse but they should be more optimistic about it.

i think think that way a good move for them to use the sixaxis like that that way it's not overshadowing the gameplay as a whole

Well... if you got USB stuff for your PC, then you can just take it there to your PS3, and then get to play it with Keyboard, mouse AND HD!!! Only a few people got PC's that are so godlike that they can handle graphics like the PS3!
