Sixaxis to be discontinued

Posted on April 2nd, 2008 at 14:47 EDT

The Sixaxis controller seems to have finally overstayed its welcome as it appears the controller will be discontinued with the release of the DualShock 3. It won't come as a surprise to most of us that Sony will decide to no longer manufacture this product in light of the mass production of their new rumble-enhanced version that is set to release in North America shortly.

A Sony representative shared the following:

“Sixaxis will no longer be offered after it’s completely sold through at retail (likely by the summer timeframe).”

Once the DualShock 3 becomes the standard, we could assume that the Sixaxis would then become a really cheap alternative in order to add a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th controller to your setup. Chances are as gamers replace theirs with the DS3, you'll likely be able to find the old and tired Sixaxis available on eBay for a bargain price.

the DS3 controller has Six Axis also right?

wow, Does this mean that devs can automatically assume most PS3 owners have rumble? I wonder how many devs will incorperate rumble as a gameplay feature? The only two that really stick out in my mind is MGS series and SotC.

Anyone who thinks Dualshock 3 doesn't have Sixaxis is just being stupid. Secondaly, pfft, im gonna stick with my Sixaxis thankyou.

Well, this isn't suprising, we all pretty much knew that the Sixaxis controller would be discontinued. I wonder how many people are even still buying the Sixaxis controllers anyways. Literally everyone that has a PS3 already knows that the Dualshock 3's will be out in just a few weeks, so I really don't see why anyone would purchase a Standard Sixaxis right now.

I've had my White Dualshock 3 controller since January because I got it from Play-asia and I love it. I'll probably get the Black Dualshock 3 controller when they come out in April. Those White controllers get dirty so fast.

Awesome. I couldn't give a flying f*** about the DS3, so i can pick up a few Sixaxis for bargain prices.

Once the DS3 actually comes out in Europe that is.

ya i just bought a second SIXAXIS about 2 months ago and doesnt even get much use. its still got that "new feel" (and smell :D). not about to waste $50 or w/e on another one. i get so into my games, i dont even realize the SIXAXIS is missing the vibration, i practically generate it myself in my mind.

I don't really pay attention to the rumble at all.  So I don't realy mind it coming I probably will only buy one down the road becauce everyone says it feels more sturdy.

Duh. The DS3 is the Sixaxis with rumble. The Sixaxis is outclassed... why continue to produce it? :P

I find it odd tho, they mention getting a 2nd, 3rd or 4th controller... but I ask, what supports 3-4 players on one PS3? I have a hard time finding games that support 2 players on one system. I plan on getting a DS3 but... will my 3rd Sixaxis just collect dust?

I'm still in chock since they didn't put in touch sense in DS3. That would have been so dang awesome! The old rumble is unimaginably uninteresting for a next gen (current gen) console. Touch sense would have been somewhat interesting anyway.

That Ds3 is "awesome baby" like D. Vital says. I got the white one. I had mine since last year. You guys are gonna love it when it finally hits stores! Ds3 's up!!

I'm not sure this is a good idea. 1. I love the LIGHT WEIGHT Six Axis controller. I'm guessing the DS3 will be quite a bit heavier. 2. Battery life on the DS3 has to be much shorter than the Six Axis. Why force us to eat this gimmick?

i saved my moneny for the dual shock 3 and pre-ordered one yesterday. i need a 2nd controller for my friend so we can play 2 player games.   the DS3s do have sixaxis controlls. kojima said they will have it in MGS4 with the rumble. you'll use it to open trash bins and peak out of them and other stuff. but, it won't be over used.

Im no hulk hogan now but im pretty sure me and most of..everyone else can handle and extra gram or two. I have been waiting for pre-order prices to drop for ages now but think ill just wait till the EU release now, but cannot wait to get the dualshock back, i know it didnt matter most of the time, but i got used to it, plus mgs! how were we supposed to play without it...cause im not keen on this new "sense...hardcore mgsfans may not be comfortable...feature"

controller without rumble shouldn't have been considered in the first place, it was a backward step in gaming immersion... like paying to goto to the cinema and watching a sci-fi in basic mono audio

I should also add that I did pre-ordered the DS3 from Amazon and look forward to eating the gimmick. I just like choices for the future. :)

I like the name "Sixaxis"... and they're not gonna completely get rid of it i guess... afterall the DualShock 3 themselves display the word "DualShock 3" where the Sixaxis logo used to be (on the top), and the Sixaxis writing has been moved to the bottom directly underneith it.

anyone who says they don't care about ds3 or don't miss the rumble will change their minds instantly after feeling it in your hands. Trust me i felt the same way, than i got 2 for x-mas (it pays to have an asian girlfriend with family still in asia) and wow it is crazy and than you relize what exactly you were missing all along.

With DS3 there's no need for Sixaxis controllers. DS3 still has motion sensing and you can turn rumble off.

Well, I'm going to need a new one anyways. My six axis' left stick has a little bit of a dead zone from the top-center position. Although, the DS2 I have as a backup still functions perfectly. Here's hoping that the DS3 is just as sturdy & reliable as its predecessor.

I haven't missed rumble at all, until GT5 Prologue. I want a DS3 for that game alone.

I REALLY CAN'T believe there are so many uneducated people not realising that the DS3 also supports Motion Sensing!!!  They obviously haven't read much about the DS3 and can't even assume that it has an additional function rather than replacing the motion sensors.  I'm sure that if the motion sensors were removed from the DS3, there would have been an outcry in the PS3!

IMO.

I believe motion sensing will be a very important function for the Sixaxis controller, as more developers learn more about it....maybe at some stage they'll evolve with it and use it in ways they're meant to be (whatever that may be!).

@ Paranoimia - Forget the Duel Shock pad, if your playing GT5 you've gotta get a wheel! Ive got the Logitech Driving Force EX with force feed back and it works a treat. All for only £40!!!

I remember something like with a certain PS3 SKU that had an 80GB hard drive...

@ shadowrep: I enjoy my copy of Super Rub'a'Dub.  I'm not ashamed.  That game kicks so much ***.  Most of my college buddies like it too.
