Part Two: Missing PS3 titles - Have you seen me?Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo of America, has gone on record to suggest that Sony and Microsoft have chosen to pursue costly strategies for their next-generation consoles; something of which he believes has ultimately put Nintendo’s rivals “in a box.”
Fils-Aime highlighted the differences between Nintendo’s strategy this generation to that of its competitors, noting that rivals Sony and Microsoft have taken the costly route of integrating the latest high-end technology in their latest home consoles, PS3 and Xbox 360, respectively.
"The challenge that our competitors have is significant,” said Fils-Aime, at the recent BMO Capital Markets sponsored conference this week. “They've gone down the path with building expensive machines that they lose money on. They've gone down the path with games that are hard to develop."
They've put themselves in a box. I don't know how they're going to get out of it."
I kinda like boxes.
They're warm and comfortable.
At least we're not jumping in the middle of the room.
=
I like boxes, as long as they're not X-boxes...
WELL , i think this guy right ! although Sony and microsoft are in box . but lets see who is going to own the box ! nintendo did do this on purpose that is way their console is so cheap and yeahh is gamecube rebuild with new controller .....f*** you nintendo and microsoft , sony system can do what you can do better ... sixaxis kills wiimote and xbox controller. ....
Reggie, if you're giving developers something easy and familiar to work with, how do you expect the boundary to be pushed further? You must face new challenges in order to advance. Someone like you should know that technology is everchanging; complications are bound to arise. Shoudn't you be focusing on your own console instead of worrying about the competitors'? Sure, Sony and Microsoft are losing money right now, and the technology is expensive and "more difficult" to develop for than your Wii's. You're obviously thinking on a short-term scale unlike Sony and Microsoft. Long-term, Reggie - that's what matters. Need help gettin' out of the closet?
lest wait and see what he has to say in a year
Is he insane?????? Thats like chevy taking a shot at BMW. My Playstation 3 is all i could have hoped for....WII is a kids toy.Call of Duty 4 looks so real, it is is making the War in Iraq look fake.
This guy annoys me, wasn't he going on as couple of days ago about how little big planet should be on his console. Jus because his console's cheaper and is selling more he thinks its better, ha! lets see how many people still use the wii in a few years time cos ps3'll still b around.
I'd much rather have an exspensive box (not xbox..it sucks..ps3 ftw) anywayz, why would i buy a tiny white thing where i have to jump around the room waving my arms around looking stupid when i can have awsome games with stunning graphics and envioments that get's better with every game...
"in a box"
Is he refferin to a very popular espionage game? :O
Wow, if that was supposed to be an insult Reggie couldnt insut his way OUT of a box. I'm starting to wonder if Reggie is trapped in a closet.
Seriously his comment makes no sense. Nintendo put themselves in a box by not making a system more advanced than a Gamecube with a "wiggle Wand". 89% of their games a rboring unless you have 3 other people over all the time to play with you also every one of those games are BETTER on the DS. Wii = Wiik
That guy should keep his mouth closed and do himself a favour. Basically he is saying that we should never move on and improve ,just keep on dishing out the same crap over and over again(yes Mario and Zelda) if Nintendo had they’re way we would still be on the Snes playing Mario 2D. Nintendo just likes to have it easy and make loads of money selling old tired games. The only reason Wii sold well is because people where on the rebound because they fell out with the PS3 cause it cost more this time round.
So this guy basically admitted that nintendo made a low-end,easy to develop for(since all the hardware but the controller is last gen) POS to make a quick buck.
Damn right Wii games are hard to develop. Shows in the (lack of) quality.
psn id: gingo... what so does this mean nintendo didn't even make a good enough console to get in the box to start with lol it will come down to who gets the most sales out of ps3 and 360 over the years because the wii will fall away by the end of 2008
Nintendo fans have in the past always slated Sony and MS for going for the 'mass market' of so-called 'casual' gamers, while claiming that they're the only true 'hard core' gamers around. But what have Nintendo done with the Wii? Yup - targeted THE most casual market around - people who otherwise wouldn't touch a videogame system.
Poor old Reggie talks of Sony and MS being in a box, but I would suggest to him that it's Nintendo who are in a box. A nice warm one, where they stick with what is familiar and safe, and they don't need to face up to the challenges posed by the big bad world outside. Basically, they had no idea how to approach the future of gaming, and buried their head in the sand.
At least Sony and MS HAVE a next-gen strategy, and aren't passing off the last generation as 'the next big thing'. All the Wii proves is that people will buy any old crap if it's cheap enough.
They put themselvs in a possition to bring higher quality content to the gamers and we are spending money on this content to thank them. lets advance in this industry.
So the opposite of putting yourself in a box is undermining the industry by holding it back through last gen hardware/experiences/graphics with waggle tacked on, and then spend money on marketing that convinces the masses that they aren't being tricked into thinking this is all new? And that it's okay for them to spend $50 on the same games they've been playing the last 3 years but with waggle?
and what is a wii.....is it a box to?!?! well a funny lookin box but itz a box indeed!!!
Oh come on, Nintendo. What is this all about? The "boxes" are cool! There's a shiny black one with chrome and then the other one even has red rings on it . :) Maybe they're just mad because they're seeing how photo-realistic games are becoming and they're not a part of that.
Well fortunatly Sony and MS did not warm over old technoligy and call it new! Reggie is riding the wave right now but let's wait and see how the Wii does in the next three year before we crown Nitty and Reggie as kings of this generation!
What ever Nintendo, I like how they talk big right now. All they have is the tickel me elmo of the next gen systems, It's cheap, and it got hyped to become a wanted item. The people I know how bought the hype are now pissed, and trying to sell there Wii's.
Thats true not to say nintendo isn't great becuase it is, but it isn't in the same catagory as xbox 360 or ps3. It focuses on simplitcness and a more fun cartoony apeal. ps3 and xbox 360 follow a more realalistic brutal hardcore gameing experince. where the ps3 rules suprem. no box with xbox just the same catagory. ps3 and wii are great products though.
I think Regie is full of it. Cause his system that is cheap and easy to develop for hasn't put out 1 game out side of zelda that captures my attention. I bought the Wii in December and play it maybe once a month for some of the vitrual console games and outside of that......it sits there, unused
No reggie your so wrong, have you seen Ratchet and Clank have your seen LBP. Sony is taking casual games to the next level, i dont want mario galaxy running around looking like a 64 game. i want new tech and new insane graphics you could only get from the ps3. So Reggie i wouldnt jump the gun and start becking the competion just yet, because your in the lead.
smd reggie
yeah but these games that have money put into them are actually worth playing and buying. I've only bought 2 games for the Wii... That says something right there.
I agree with Jared on this one, I think each companie has their own way of interpreting the times with each of their consoles. The question is, how long will it take until we have one company (or more) that steer the industry in what would be considered a "prevalent way of gaming" in terms of innovations and use of currently available technology. With that said, Fils-Aime knows that while they are dominating for the mean time, it will hardly last when next year each company is showing AAA big gun games.
would you rather have the same old type of boxes that are big or a new type that is small
ok i havent bought a nintendo consle since N64
but i do play their newst games because of my friend being a nintendo fan....
but wanna see wht nintendo does next gen???
i mean they have already done motion sensor...
they could do virtual reality... but that cost money....
and nintedo is all for being afforadble....
Lets see... High end console with great interface and so many features versus jumping around your living room to a bad looking game for your neighbors to watch.

Nintendo went the way of the casual gamer after they decided they couldn't compete after the flop of the GameCube. I'd much rather spend a bunch of money on a high end console than a cheap piece of crap. I can't game that much with college everyday, but I sure as h3ll don't want to play that when I have free time.
Why the ***** should they create a dumb down machine with limitations where epic games of great proportions would not be possible, or push the envelope of technology...Just because MS and Sony have bigger b**** than ninty(with their let play it safe plan)especially sony with their ultra big b****, he is a little sour. Dont get mad there buddy. Its part of business...its call taking risks...
At first he was cool, but now he is c**cky as *** and lately he has been talking out his ***. Imagine a world with all the gaming systems like the wii....man i would end my life..nah not really but i would start pc gaming only
i dont see why nintendo is even in the same area as the ps3 and the xbox, nintendo is a totally different experience compared to the xbox and ps3. i see them as being on the sideline offering entertainment when people just want get away and have some childhood fun.
If he would've phrased that differently, then maybe it would've made sense.
PS3 does compete with Wii - No point sticking your head in the sand and pretending Wii does not exist...
Having said that, Wii will find it very hard to sell as the price gap closes. My feeling is Nintendo got off to a great start - they did even better because Sony management dropped the ball so many times. But things will change & the Wii will seriously run out of puff 12 months from now. By then with lower production costs and growing software revenue Sony & Xbox 360 will be out of the box and the Wii will be in the trash can... or so Sony's theory goes...
The only risk is if Wii attracts a lot of publishers and follow-on titles that where previously sold on PS2 - and at the same time Sony does a bad job attracting PS2 users to upgrade. If this occures Sony is in very big trouble. The news that Okami is being ported to Wii is big news in my books. If branches of Final Fantasy started moving across to Wii then cracks will appear at Sony. The sign for impending disaster is if Okami sales on the Wii are good. If it Okami sells well then there will be a stampede of publishers all screaming "gold rush !".
Wii is crap compared to PS3 or Xbox 360 in terms of graphics however it is three times better than PS2. Hence games like Suikoden, Star Ocean, Monster Hunter, Shadow Hearts, Disgaea, Phantom Brave, DragonQuest, Fatal Frame, Kessen, Kingdom Hearts, Onimusha, Shin Megami Tensei etc etc... would all continue quite nicely on Wii. If PS2 users felt they where abandoned by Sony's limited or non existant BC then the Wii could bring them across in such numbers that PS3 would forever be sidelined.
Add an early reboot of the console war by Microsoft - knowing that right now Sony's PS4 Dev team have broken up and further Cell R&D cancelled - there you have it. Victory to Nintendo and a growing share for Microsoft. The easiest way for Sony to prevent this is too do a good job in luring PS2 users across over the next 12 months. I can only hope Sony see this in time.
lol Oh and this wasnt the case with the PSone and PS2? Both at the time were costly consoles -- but broke all the boundries - thats why they were so successful. Sorry Nintedo; but we want to evolve. I dont know about you guys but I dont want to spend the rest of my life playing off DVD's and blocky graphics.
All i know is when developers start complaining that its hard to develope games for a console because of the new tech in them then they should not be in the bussiness. we as gamers and most of us who have 360's and ps3 are hard core gamers and we have been gaming for years and we want and deserve the latest and greatest games. and that includes eye candy (GRAFX) and gameplay and the only systems that can deliver that to us is PS3 and for now the 360. the wii is a slap in the face for us hardcore gamers. its basically a cash grab .
Reggie, Reggie.....In a few years your competitors will be making the dough while your little Wii will just be a faded memory.
Do yourself a favor - borrow a Wii from a friend and play Super Mario Galaxy... I had the good fortune to have a mate with a pre-release store copy and I can now see where the Wii fits into the scheme of things. Quite an amazing experience.
They captured their niche market, which is casual and non-gamers who don't want to spend much... and want something easy to pick-up and use. No block-buster games, very kid-ish titles and low quality graphics do not give Nintendo bragging rights. It's a different system entierly, and way too early for trash talk.
