Sony announces 80GB PS3 as permanent SKU

Posted on July 15th, 2008 at 16:53 EDT

More news from Sony's press conference at E3 is rolling in. The company revealed that, due to popular demand, from September on the primary PS3 model will feature an 80GB hard drive. The press release reads:

"The 80GB model will retail for $399, and will offer all of the features and functionality of the 40GB model with double the storage to accommodate more movies, graphics, music, photos and other entertainment content -- all for the same price."

One of the reasons the current 80GB SKU is so popular is that it's the only remaining model that includes PS2 backwards compatibility. The new 80GB SKU will not. That will no doubt create some confusion (and disappointment), but with the increasing focus on downloadable content it's good to see a bigger standard hard drive.

Everytime Sony does good stuff like this; I can't help but think back 2 years ago. $600 PS3....$750 after tax cause I bought a game and Resistance.....Wow. If I waited I could'v saved some serious moolah. The griples of being an early adopter.

That's good that its at the same price as the 40gb!

Maybe the 40 will have a price drop?

I wonder if there wil be a $100 price cut to get rid of the current model?

with the loss sony has sustained already at pricepoints, i doubt we'll see a 100 dollar price cut. The 80gb upgrade to the 40gb is a genius move by sony to avoid a necessary price cut. They alter the ps3 with a significally cheap upgrade, to make the price sound reasonable, when in all reality its still overpriced to a consumers budget, but still alot for the money.

Let's hope there's a price drop for the current 40 GB SKU before October... I'll be in need of a new ps3 by September...  (I'm not counting on it breaking or anything, but I won't be living with my bro anymore, so I'll be looking to get a new ps3 after selling my current one to him...  :-D )

Whats the point in that? They are just wasting their time if they think its the 80Gb hard drive people want.

They better get software b/c of ps2 titles up and running, cuz i would be REALLY disappointed if i won't be able to play all of those great ps2 games.

I for one still think the 60gb with the ability to pop a ps2 disc in (ps2 driver) is the best system cause i own one  :P

the reason people bought the 80gb was because of the backward compatibility. wtf sony

Sony, you are idiots if you think the only thing people cared about was HDD space.  People want B/C, that's why the 80gb is so popular!  Yes, you are confusing everybody with this.

How in the world does that make sense?

Who the bleep cares about 40GB of space?

Make the current 80 $400 and the 160GB $500. End of SKUs

Wow this is so freaken gay, I can't beleave sony thinks that people buy the 80gig Playstation 3 for the extra 40gigs. Sure it's true that people need more space because my 60 gigs is down to it's last 20 or so, but still people buy the 80gig for the PS2 backwards compadibility.

This is is so gay, Sure I already have a PS3 but i want to get another soon and I WANT BACKWARDS COMPADIBILITY. NOT A BIGGER HARD DRIVE.

Feel like we should start a partition to stop this. Sure 400 bucks for an 80gig sounds good but I would perfer 40gig then use the extra money to keep backwards compadiblity rather then using it to upgrade the hard drive.

Unless they have some Playstation 2 100% Software emulation planned. Similar to the PS1 software emulation where it emulates it with absolutly no hardware at all for a later firmware update. So then all the 40gigs will have ps2 backwards compadibility and the new 80s will have it also.

@4

Um, the price of the 40GB HAS to drop if it shares shelf space with the new non-BC 80GB.  Duh.  You are not going to have stores that offer the 40GB and the 80GB for the same price.

why do they always wait with releasing this stuff!! what if a person want to buy one now but has to wait a few months cause he wants the 80gb instead of the 40.

i dont think this is realyu a good deal from sony. personammy i prefer backward compatibility to an extra 40gb of hdd space. I mean backward compatibility shouldn't have been any porblem for the ps3 in the first place.Sony will u please do something about this....
