Scott Steinberg, Vice President of Product Marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), has downplayed Microsoft’s exclusive episodic content for Grand Theft Auto IV, suggesting a “large percentage” of consumers are unlikely to fork out of the extra material initially.
Speaking to GameDaily, Steinberg commented, "Perhaps [Microsoft will be] shipping some episodic content in the fall, but there is a whole lot of product shipping on the PS3 in April and I personally don't think there's going to be a huge percentage of folks who [will] jump into downloadable content for another price when they're still playing through the core product.”
"So while I do think having that brand on their system was a move for them which they felt they needed to make because they cut a big cheque for it, I think PlayStation fans know the Grand Theft Auto experience on the PS2 is how they grew up playing Grand Theft Auto.”
Steinberg also said that the influx of several high profile software releases over the next few months is likely to sway consumer interest in favour of the PlayStation 3, adding, "When you combine GTA IV with MGS 4 and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - all the exclusive content that we've got going forward - I think that goes from tipping point to shoving point for consumers who are on the fence.”

Hmm didnt someone in the forums say we get some exclusive content aswell?
I agree with Scoot. I would assume that Take 2 knows any DLC that really changes the story of the game on the xbox version would really hurt this PS fan base. Now a days, with gaming making as much money as it is, I don't think they would want to risk that....its all about numbers.
I'm getting the PS3 version. I have a 360, but only a silver Live account. I don't see why I should pay for multiplayer when it's free on every other platform. The game itself is meant to be huge, so I don't really care for the downloadable content, especially when one has to pay for it.
Out of the 8 people i know who have 360s, all but one have failed and had to be fixed, and only one person of those 8 actually uses Xbox live, and this person uses the one month trail over and over again, using different e-mails. I dont know anyone who actually pays for live let alone, buy the content on it.
I dont think Sony should feel threatened by this, and Microsoft wasted 50 million dollars on "exclusive conent" that only 5 percent of Live users will actually buy.
Be very afraid about the GTA IV news for today and tomorrow, renember April Fools, so expect a lot of news related with the episodic content and the release of GTA IV, I know that is a little off topic, but reading what Steffantj1 wrote, i expect some kind of joke about the episodic content for the PS3.
Hi! I really feel that if there is to be DLC or episodic content for the Xbox, then that's fine with me. If people want to pay a couple bucks extra for add ons etc. how does it hurt or impact the PS3 user base? Especially when I see a game that clocks in at 100 hours of gameplay anyway. Most of the DLC for some games is minimal at best, new costumes? some new guns? Unless your diehard fans these are unimportant extras. Now unless your talking about add on maps and stuff (Like Warhawk) which I think are done extremely well with their multiplayer only game then that is a nice option to have. In the end I like to see gamers in general have as many options as possible. Seeing as its our wallets that spin these wheels anyway, no matter what platform you have.
I think he's right! It would probably feel wrong playing GTA without a DualShock or Sixaxis.
Playstation HOME will have TONS of GTA IV downloadable content as far as I've heard.
hey profSebastian you have a good point there ...... you wait till tomorows headlines they will be things like GTA4 gets banned in europe or usa by the censors, or PS3 version of GTA4 Cancelled due to technical difficulties or Microsoft have bought EA who have just bought Rockstar and shelved the PS3 Version of GTA4 this is all heading to a website near you ......
Scott my thoughts exactly. Shader Im with you.I have all both systems and I have never played a GTA with any controller other than a Dual Shock. And I plan on keeping that tradition cuz I'll have a DS3 in my hands when GTA come out.I also know only like 2 cats who didnt send their 3fixme's back. Thats sad.
Yup me too (but i don't have Wii XD) xbox360 can't play GTA4 because it's life is too short but GTA4 life is too long keep going same as PS3 ha ha
Everyone get's wrapped up about DLC, why? Myself I have never bout nor do I think I'd ever pay a developer for content that should have been present in the game to begin with.
Who cares, GTA is gonna be huge anyway.
Lets put it this way! I bought the PS3 for this game. Then again I would never by the 360 anyways but, Who cares if they have DLC they have to play on 5+ discs when we only need 1 maybe 2, That right there is what sold me.
PSN: DarkJ3JB
interesting that microsoft believe their console can hack it for a hundred hours and then add more time on top of that. and for that content you'd need a hard drive too. so a minimal amount of people are gonna get it anyway. rockstar are laughing all the way to the bank with this one.
psn id: gingo.... i agree, the downloadable content will only interest current owners and maybe have a big increase in the amount of people on XBL but for unit sales i think ps3 and sony will benefit greatly from this game
True that, seriously most people play some of the missions and then boom you go into your free roaming phase which takes up hours of your life, usually this starts with inserting your first cheat into the game
people will not paymoney for more missions in a game you can play sandbox-style when you're done. the only thing that would make downloadable content worthwhile is if it added more areas geographically like shivering isles did with oblivion.
I don't look at GTA as a must have game for it's story. And I've actually read that it takes only about 50+ hours to complete. You can maybe clock in 100 if you do a lot of just messing around? It looks good for people who are thinking about getting a PS3. GTA4, GTP, Haze and MGS4.
i work in the electronics department at a retail story and a microsoft rep told me that the content is already on the disc, and that could be part of why it didnt make its previous release date
The PS3 version of GTA IV will have some things to do with HOME like clothes encluding hats also wallpaper for your HOME space which will be cool.
Well I have a PS3 and an Xbox 360 but I wont be buying the 360 version of GTA4 because it just wouldnt feel right playing a GTA game with the 360's controller.
I have to agree. I don't think that the downloadable content for the Xbox 360 is a big deal either, especially since you have to pay for it. The Playstation fanbase is larger, and the the majority of the GTA series was played on the Playstation consoles. Sony is just hoping on brand loyalty and I think that a lot of those previous PS2 owners will be loyal and get the PS3.
I think it's funny because Microsoft always seems to put all of it's eggs in one basket. Microsoft is putting a lot towards GTA4 in hopes to push past Sony and I don't think it's going to work. Microsoft is almost like a one-hit-wonder because Microsoft count's on just a few game titles to be successful such as Halo, Gears of War, and Bioshock. It's like if Microsoft doesn't have one of those game titles coming out, they have NOTHING.
If someone buys an Xbox 360 just for GTA4's downloadable content, first they have to get the Gold Membership for Xbox Live and pay $50 bucks, and then they have to actually pay for the downloadable content, and there's no telling how much it will cost at this moment in time. Buying the Xbox 360 just for GTA4's downloadable content would really be more costly than if someone just bought the PS3 and GTA4.
I wonder why more Xbox gamers don't complain that they don't have Free Online. I guess they think that it's a "privelage" to pay for Online. Us PS3 owners are playing some of the same games that they are playing Online for free and they even aren't complaining.
Thats all the 360 is good for. FPS. The PlayStation family have EyeToy (and PlayStation Eye) with a lot of room for potential. SingStar has a lot going for it.
Downloadable content or not, if the game needs to download extras to make it a "complete experience", then it's not worth buying.
I have to agree with alot of u guys because like u guys says when u have to pay for the DLC just for a little bit of stuff like guns, costume,or maybe some new cars and thats it.I have all three next gen consoles so ill be buying GTA4 for the ps3 i like how the ps3 have free online and nintendo wii too but not xbox 360 though u have to pay to play online fu** M$.
For anyone who said that its just clothes, new guns, or new cars are wrong. They said that the content would be episodic, which means new missions. So it will be completely new missions which i think would be awesome to have. But i would never want to pay $50 dollars just to download new mission that will probably cost you around $20. Paying $70 dollars just for a few new missions, i'll stick with the PS3 version.
And do you really think Rockstar is going to pass up the 1-3 million (just guessing) PS3 users who buy GTA IV. PS3 will have there own downloadable content, probably even new missions just like the 360. They just will be different missions with different people. The 360 will still have its EXCLUSIVE content, but im pretty sure Rockstar would not pass it up on the PS3, where any user with internet connection can download it. If anything they will WANT to put it out.
But i could be wrong but it seems pretty logical to me for Rockstar to do it that way. Does anyone agree with me???
amen to scott
psn id J08hawks
Lets get a few things out of the way. First you don't have to pay 50 to get online and then pay the fee to get the DLC of your choice. Once you connect your online you have access to any and al media that is available. Second, like someone else said, if you think all your getting is guns and clothes your sadly mistaken. Also, third parties have made alot on money on XBL. Some give away their DLC's and others charge. And from what I hear MS leave it up to the producer to charge or not. Also, peole never complain about having to pay for XBL because its still a better value than PSN. And thats not just fanboy talk, but every journalist from the indusrtry.
aslong as we have a solid online gameplay and a solid single player campaign im happy.
As long as they offer up a classic controller layout for the PS3, then I'll agree with the "grown up on PS platform" comment. (Sorry guys, but I'm still on about that little tidbit of L2/R2). Especially since everyone here pretty much agrees about the controller preference.
And another thing: I wouldn't know about the total cost of development of this game, but wouldn't the $50m that M$ paid them for the DLC almost pay for the total cost of making the game? I dunno.
That and a third of the 360 install base doesn't even have a hard drive to put the content on. The original experience can only come with a Sony console and controller.
This game will be sweet and sufficient enough without DLC. I think it's a waste of money. $50 million is just that, a lot of MONEY!!! The funding for Guerilla Warfare and the development for Killzone 2 is probably less expensive than this. And as big a fan of GTA that I am I would probably prefer Killzone 2 on PS3 than GTA on an Xbox360. Plus it's only a few weapons and missions.
@ Robbinator: you must really play GTA's SSLLOOWWLLYY!!! Are you blind? Literally? I finished the game 99.66% playing about 2 hours a day.
I love GTA , GTA 2, GTA 3 plus GTA Liberty City so I like the idea of extra episodes and other goodies that keep the game fresh & alive. My only question is cant Sony just buy the same extra's too.
It isnt fair for RockStar to take sides and back one console over another - so offer Sony the same opportunity - Problem solved!
