At CES this year, Kaz Hirai, the President of Sony Computer Entertainment, stated that the PlayStation 3 was going to be profitable in 2008; unlike the huge losses it made for Sony in 2007.
After Hirai's statement the production costs were reported to be cut in half from the high $800 production costs down to $400 for each unit. Due to this news it sounded unlikely that the price was going to be cut again. Rumors were beginning to circulate that said the price was going to be cut to $299 in late January.
Combining the statement of Kaz Hirai and the $400 production costs, it doesn't really seem to increase the chance of a price cut so early in the year. That is probably why Sony confirmed to Bloomberg that they have no plans to cut the price of the PlayStation 3 in Japan, North America or Europe. Sorry for the people waiting for the PS3 to drop another $100, but it probably won't happen any time soon.
Stay tuned!

psn id: gingo.... there will be ap rice cut but more towards october or september this year i cant see them doing anything before especially since ps3 sales have increased
Definitely, as long as they made those production costs go down, they won't probably have one until the holidays. Again it won't be a specific amount being dropped like $100 either I suppose.
i dont think they should need to cut the price yet, sales are going up and the big 08 games are coming. IF the ps3 doesnt see a sale spike throughout 08 then they should price cut, other then that they should hold off the price cut until 09
they will eventually cut the price when GTA4 or MGS4 arrives (at least that´s what I think), but they cant say they will because everyone that is going to buy a PS3 today/tomorrow/next week is gonna wait for the price drop to buy the console and that is not a good thing for SONY.
GO PLAYASTATION!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah I'm waiting for the Lamborgini to drop there price to $10,000.00 before I buy one too, just buy a PS3, you will not regret it, I got my 60gig for $600.00, I don't regret it..
"Sorry for the people waiting for the PS3 to drop another $100, but it probably won't happen any time soon." You should know better than that. You're just automatically taking Sony's word for it? Much less any game company's word for it when they deny something? Sony denied all the other price drops too. Seriously, PSU's journalistic integrity is seriously borked if we can't even get past spelling and grammar errors, much less backing down from denials like this.
If they would confirm the pricedrop, then everyone thinking about buying one would wait until the drop. The sales would stop until the price was dropped. Never confirm pricedrops.
@Punisher99
Preach my brotha!
im so glad tht i gt my ps3 the day it came out and i sometimes regret paying nearley £500 all together for the ps3 but i dnt regret it one bit and nearley evryone in my school are ditching the CheapBox 3sithy and getting a ps3 and they are glad bout the pridce of the ps3 and thy wreckon its alot cheaper compared to the 360 as all the features thy want on their xboz works out more than the ps3 and thy prefer the ps3
Keep It up sony!!!!
it would be early however 360 has a model for 280$ , Sony NEEDS to find a way to cut production even more so they can match this....
Sony will drop the price of the PS3 when Microsoft drop the price of the XBox 360, and Microsoft WILL drop the price of the XBox 360. Hardware manufacturing cost is where Microsoft have a massive advantage compared to Sony, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a drop sooner or later.
there will be a price drop, but it will happen when a big game drops like MGS4.
a 50 dollar price cut in october would help a lot
ok serioulsly i am sick of comming on here and seeing pplz sayin oh the x-box is cheaper then playstation sony needs to make a price drop!! give it up already! Sony doesnt need to drop anything the price the ps3 is now is a STEAL! my 60 gig with all the acceceries 2 games and a blue ray movie and a years insurance cost me over 1000$ and i would gladly pay it again ! the reason the x-box is cheaper and having more price drops is because it is a inferiar machine!! its a dvd player on juice pretty much!! playstation is a full multi media system! so for a extra 120$ or so depending on the region you get a better system, free online play and support... AND a high deff video player!! HOW IS IT PPL CANT DISH OUT 450$ for a ps3 but will go ahead and pay almost 1000$ for a stand alone blue ray player!!?? People just need to stop being so cheap and go out and splurge a little!
@ hububla: Almost everyone on here already had a PS3. The continuation of price cuts leads to a better install base and then to more games being made for the PS3. The more PS3s sold means more people to buy games, which is what developers look at. That's why so many previously exclusive games are going multiplatform. The install base is just now getting to a point where developers can start turning a profit with games.

Hasn't Sony denied every price drop coming? I'm sure we will see a bit of a drop with production costs cut in half. The Wii will only continue its momentum until the PS3 hits $299.
that sucks. my friend wants to buy one for GTAIV and GT5. i might get him to be able to buy one for MGS4. he might like it if he plays it over at my house
Eh, it could only help sales....but I feel the PS3 is already reasonably priced.....
It doesn't need another price cut it is cheap enough,people just need to stop being so dam cheap
thers still a possibility, Sony may be playing Posum who knows? I'm still believe something is goin to happen when MGS4 is dropped.
@infernoReaper
I couldn't agree with you more we need more people to buy PS3 wether we have to drop the price or not in order to increase our install base.
probibly november, i cant see a price cut so early in the year. and even then if sales are high they will probibly postpone it till 2009.
Anyone who is a cheap-skate enough to think that such a technological marvel can drop to half the original price so early in it's life,really doesn't deserve a ps3.
Blu-ray ain't just for movies its for games that won't fit on DVD and for region unlocked so they can put all those languages on the disc. xbox 360 using DVD is going to have a hard time with big games like Lost Odyssey which will use FOUR DVDs which would only need one Blu-ray to fit the game on.
Snip snip! Sales momentum for Jan is slowing again so they need to do something. No game is going to pull them out of this rut. Why not simply put back Backward Compatibility (less than $20) and offer targeted incentives to PS2 owners to upgrade?
Otherwise without BC they will have to start cutting deep with a $100 chop to the price to get any movement.
If they do nothing then PS3 will languish as more publishers delay or cancel releases. We need momentum, and vastly more than they got over Christmas.
