Sony denies rumble-sixaxis is on the way

Posted on August 4th, 2007 at 14:12 EDT

Sony Computer Entertainment America has denied reports that the firm has begun preliminary development on a rumble-enabled sixaxis control pad, but did confirm news that the company is in the process of enhancing the peripherals motion-sensing functionality.

Speaking in an announcement this week, David Karraker, Sony’s director of corporate communication denied Internet speculation, asserting, "We have not added rumble [to PS3], and have no announcements regarding this feature.”

In related news, however, he revealed that the firm has recently distributed controllers with improved motion-sensing features amongst the development community, but was keen to highlight this was simply a common occurrence in the development evolution of any product.

"From time to time, we make minor enhancements to the controllers for our platforms," said Karraker. "We recently sent out to the development community some new prototypes that have a slightly enhanced sensitivity for the analog sticks and the motion sensing within the Sixaxis controller. This is not a new controller, but is part of the normal development and evolution of controllers," he added.

Nevertheless, the omission of rumble in the PlayStation 3’s controller remains very much one of the most heavily criticised aspects of the system, a feature that has been in use on Sony consoles since its inception with the Dual Shock pad on the original PlayStation back in 1997.

I really dont care much for rumble, thats past gen. to me.. I would rather that Sony fixes the response time of the motion sensor.. Cause theres something going on with the Sixaxis controller, that it freezes on you for a couple of seconds.. Its always happening to me when Im at a crucial point in the game.. Sux big time..

neo_naz it is not a price drop because they are not continuing the 60gb and now the main sku is at full price with 80gb storage.

Jzer29 rumble is not last gen, that is true fanboy right there everyone because if rumble was to come you will be saying that oh great ps3 has rumble.

I sense rumble is coming very soon now, first no price cut and then a few days later BAM $100 cheaper, now this.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.Certain games need to have the rumble feature.I hate playing F1 or any other driving game without it.Rumble just adds to the racing experience.Hope Sony brings it back soon.

THIS IS MUST READ PS3 OWNERS!!! This is what I've heard from my friend who works on Sony manufacturing..... "The new ps3 controllers will contain rumble.... also he said the buttons are clear like that on the PSP, BUT unlike the psp buttons when u push the button it will light up acording to color." (so I'm guessing X button will light blue, triangle will green, etc.)

MOO12 that sounds pretty decent and seems sony will b taking a step into the modding world "IF TRUE WHAT U STATED" althou the lighting part i doubt that will happen because rumble is enough on killing battery life so i dont think addition of lights will happen to shorten it out even more

Rumble sux, it has since the PS2. It was a cool thing with the PS1, but got old fast and now just eats batteries. MAybe the problems with the motion sixaxis lies in the shaking of the paddle like Sony said. They said they left out Rumble due to it interfering, maybe shaking the controller  is having an effect. I like the controller the way it is though. Tweak the motion and make it better, but who cares about rumble. As long as it supports force feedback for stearing wheels I am fine. I dont need my paddle shaking though.  And for the xbots out there, if the 360 didnt have rumble but the PS3 did, I bet you would be saying that rumble wasnt needed. Just like you keep saying more space isnt needed in spite of the fact the devs keep saying it is, and games are starting to come to the 360 on 2 discs.

I doubt that, with all the complaints that have been rolling in, Sony will leave rumble out for long.  (Especially ever since they made nice with Immersion.)

its coming. they just dont want the sales to go down. MOO12 as much as i want to believe that i dont think its happeing.

I personally dont care if there is no rumble, i dont need it and i dont think it is that important. The game feels the same without it, i played Rainbow Six on the 360 and PS3, and i didnt even realize there was no rumble, its not that good anyway. I makes your hands vibrate, thats cool !!!!!
