Sony discontinues 20GB and 60GB PS3's in Japan

Posted on January 10th, 2008 at 02:29 EDT

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that Japan will no longer receive shipments of 20GB and 60GB PlayStation 3 consoles. The final shipment will be sent out sometime this month, so only the systems that are currently in circulation will be available.

According to SCEI, this move was made to further push the sales of the 40GB PS3 bundle. Our guess is that they are also preparing the market for the release of the new 40GB Devil May Cry 4 bundle which is set to hit at the end of the month in Japan.

So if Japan is still wanting a fully backwards compatible PS3 now, they better head to the nearest retail store now as supplies are limited. Stay tuned for more information.

lol i got a 60 gig to might be big and it might get warm but alteast it didnt loose its nuts... Anyway this is good actually i mean it will make it cheaper on cost to only have just 2 types means they can pump them out faster in the long run. although i see in the near future a bigger hardrive for the ps3 offically from Sony or a new Sku if Microsoft (Xbox 360) comes out with a new one.

Thats good. Sony needs to have only one SKU.

But they will probably update the 40GB version this fall with PS2 compability i hope. The memory stick reader and 2 USB ports is not important. Or maybe the Memory stick reader. So maybe we will se a 40GB version with Memory stick reader and PS2 compability this fall when the production price of PS3 has gone down more. Because I think 40GB will be the only Sku on the market starting sometime this year. And why not upgrade it and make it better. but still sell it for 399 or maybe 349 this fall.

Yeah I got my 60gb, but it went faulty a month later and I exchanged it for a new one. What will happen if it goes faulty again? I took the extended warranty so will I get what I paid for in the first place?

They screwed up big time by releasing the 40 GB without backward compatibility... thats all 360/Wii fanboys talk about these days. The 60 gigger was the first and best and they really shoulda stuck with it.

Got a 60GB a little after launch.  Too bad Sony doesn't have a trade-up deal to trade-in your 20 or 40GB for a discounted 80GB.

@DJRUSSELL

I agree mate - the 60GB model was perfect. You got hardware BC for those lucky enough or software for next best and the disk capacity was spot on too. Oh well...

@djrussell

I agree, but the 360/Wii fanboys would have just kept going on about how the price is so horrible for the 60GB. No matter what Sony does, 360 and Wii fanboys will be there to shoot it down, make it seem unimportant, etc. That's what fanboys do, they sit around at their computers, and look for anything they can find to crap on the competition's system, or just the company in general, and downplay all the good things they do. Not just 360 or Wii fanboys though, PS3 fanboys do it too, with the other consoles/companies.

But yeah, back on point, I do agree that they should've stuck with backwards compatibility in all SKU's, at least until the PS3's library of games had all its' big hitters out (MGS4, FFXIII, God of War 3, etc). Then again, I got myself a 60GB, but I also still have my slimline PS2 set up, and seeing as I don't mind having both consoles set up, personally I'm not phased either way.

I have a 40 gig which is entirely sufficient for my needs. I could of course quite easily upgrade my PS3 with a 160 gig drive (without invalidating my warranty I might add).... This is another reason I purchased a PS3.

I think some of you guys seem to be missing the point here. The problem is some of us have paid full whack on the launch of the PS3 for a 60gb model with BC. Now that the 60gb model is discontinued what will our systems be replaced with if they go faulty? The lower price 40gb model? If thats the case then we're going to lose out.

Eg I paid full £425 (uk) plus took out there extended warranty with Game so if my system went wrong they would give me a replacement. What will they replace it with now?

Do you see the dilema.

Its not fair to discontinue the model wothout someone losing out in the long run. Its not just a case of HDD space what about usb slots and BC?

Touch wood i won't have any problems in the near future

I guess for once, the early adopters aren't getting shafted (for now) by superior SKUs.  But it's surprising that Sony downgraded the specs so soon.  I'm confused though, is the 80GB model already obselete, or is that still going?  I hope they offer the 80GB SKU soon in PAL regions too.

@ MrAce

I can understand  where you're coming from, If anything should go wrong with your 60gb and had to get a 40gb replacement, I would hope then Sony should reimburse or give you extra software & maybe some new games for the difference for free. Afterall, 40 & 80gb PS3's are not 100% backward compatible. I have the same problem too. Good luck!

i'd really like Sony to release full ps2 bc for ALL SKUs,if they're not going to do that,at least keep a bc compatible SKU on the market.

Sony already made up their minds about BC, I doubt it's going to change.  Well at least there's plenty of PS2s to go around.

Those that buy from the US, and use in the PS3 in UK/Europe, do you need a step-down power transformer, or is there a simple switch to change power settings?  Also are all games multiregion?  With HD having the same resolution and frame rates, I don't understand how/why there should be regional differences.

I think they should keep a smaller gig unit in the market. Considering the hard drive could always be upgraded.

I got the new 80 gb model and its awesome I don't really care about backwards combatibility because i'm playing next gen games once you play new games and go back the old ones are boring.

Everyone here who criticizes the 40Gb is just mad that the other people got a cheaper PS3. I have the 60Gb  model, and I love the 40Gb. I'd need a bigger hard drive, but seriously, who the helI DOESN'T have a PS2? Out of 120 million + PS2 owners, I'm guessing any gamer looking for a PS3 has one of these.

The 80gig will probably have a great bundle later on in the year, that or the is a special MGS version of one of the current sku's alongside the DMC bundle.

With a nice slim LCD screen I have made room for the PS3 under neath and with  minimum cables. - The idea of sitting a PS2 under neath as well does not appeal at all! I paid top dollar and I expected to get BC.

Truth is Sony just wants to avoid any costs fixing the emulated PS2 compatibility models. That is so wrong on so many levels.Its not moral or ethical to start with. They should support their customers.

Lack of BC & a lack of focus on Gaming are my only gripes and yes I go on and on about it because it seems to be the area's Sony doesnt want to fix and I dont understand why. If they had a big focus on games and I could bring across all my Playstation games I'd be stoked. Maybe getting Home up a little quicker would be the icing...

I too have a 6OGB PS3, most of my PS1/2 games work Myst's (PS1) sound is dodgy, and Myst III: Exile's (PS2) graphics are dodgy, but Riven (PS1) has had no problems so far.
