It is something about opening up your gaming console that many companies such as Microsoft raises a red flag on. In some cases, it may even void the warranty that one may have. Sony on the other hand takes a completely different stance on this, only if it is held within certain boundaries.
With the great abundance of content that an owner could have on his or her PS3 console from game saves, pictures, trailers, and other PSN downloads, a 40GB or even 80GB hard drive may fill up at a rapid pace.
So what would incline an individual to not try to open up their console to place in a much higher storage drive, say, 120GB? Well, if you are a PS3 owner then you are in luck, because Sony is allowing you to upgrade your hard drive to any type that you may find at a retailer such as Best Buy.
Social Media Manager, Jeff Rubenstein explains:
“No matter which model of the PLAYSTATION 3 you’ve got - 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, or 80GB - music, video, and gaming download fiends will find a way to fill up their hard disk drive. Fortunately, the PS3 doesn’t require some hard-to-find proprietary HDD - you can swap it out yourself with the kind of drive found at most electronics retailers and on the internet.”
He also explains the type of HDD you may use for your PS3 if one decides to go that route:
“The type of internal 2.5″ drives that work with the PS3 top out at about 250gb. So if you’re looking for more storage and/or don’t wanna bother with opening up your box, 500gb external USB drives are also readily available.”
He even linked to a CNET tutorial that explains in detail the steps one may take to upgrading their PS3 to a higher end HDD. Personally, this is a big help for those who are download monsters with their PS3 hard drive at the tip of the spear in terms of open space. It is thankful to see that Sony is giving some attention to this in a positive light.

I think I'll wait for a terabyte model when it comes out...when it's cheaper!!!
PS. Sorry, bad news/rumour....as soon as MGS4 is released on the PS3, in about 12-14 months afterwards it will be released on the X360!!! (sometime during 2009). Check out the article on xboxfamily.com. The MS PR doesn't deny or confirm this, but makes it sound more likely to happen rather than wishful thinking. You be the judge readers!
PPS. Please read Comment 37 for additional info.
"I'm being open minded here and not arrogant like some people can be!"
Kojima, creator and master of MGS said PS3 exclusive so many times now its not funny, give it up ffs.
Also nice to see sony actualy telling people to upgraid
Just in: Game company PR rep just told me killer 360 exclusive title coming out on PS3
I e-maild sony about this they said
"Blah blah blah something that will make people belive what ever the fsck i want them to"
So as you can clearly see all my information is 100% credable and not made up tho i quote no source and can give no evidence but my word that its all true.
For those of you gulable enough to belive such information i will point out that makeing up a response email from company X is easy tho they failed quite hard. M$ would never send a personalised e-mail response to a no comment event. They would just say "Thank you for your interist, unfortunatly at this time we can not comment on the matter in question" also take a read of that response dose it sound like a M$ PR profesional e-mail response? to me it looks like a poor attempt to sound official but ending up sounding to casual.
I am soo sick of seeing rumors about MGS4 on 360..it's getting really annoying...i bet you the rumors are still going to continue after the release of MGS4
I mean, Kojima himself has stated that MGS4 is only on the PS3. Any other sources are just plain lying
Matrix...stop being spammer. And a reliable source is from Xboxfamily.com? seriouosly next time bring better sournce. And this has nothing to do with MGS 4.
Turning on my PS3: There is now under 500 MB in your HDD
Going into a game/PS store etc.: There is now under 500 MB in your HDD
Going out from a game/PS store etc.: There is now under 500 MB in your HDD
Glad to read this article :D
psn id: gingo.... i'm in no need of making my hard drive any bigger at the moment but i will gladly change it when the time comes that i need to, i'm glad sony are taking a positive stance on people changing their hard drives
Matrix are you weird or what? How the heck would a MS PR know anything about this when Microsoft themselves don't. Not even Konami's PR would know anything. PR's get it wrong and the main devs have to correct it. If Kojima and his team at Kojima productions are never gonna port the game, then how will MGS4 make its way to 360? Kojima is the sort of person who wouldn't do it for huge sums of money because he cares about his work and wouldn't sell his creation to be badly ported to the 360 by anyone.
1. Matrix you're such a Xbot.. What your saying has nothing to do with this topic and 2..Seriously you PSU writers.. This same topic has been on the Playstation Blog since the 28th!!!!! You must've threw back one too many last night to be starting the New Year like this.. Please lets get with the program??? Happy New Year's anyways..
soo aside from the mgs nonsense you're talkin about...how do you get your old data onto the new hard drive
Wow,this is the first time i've seen trolling in the comments section.lol
C'mon, you think Kojima can make 50GBs worth of non-stop,completely dependent on CELL and an in-built HDD data, work on the crapbox pleasefixme without making it gimped down?
I recently bought a 1tb western digital hard drive formated in FAT32. It worked fine in that state, but once I realized that FAT 32 will not allow files over 4gb to transfer to my hdd I decided to reformat to NTFS. I own a Sony HDR-SR7 High def camcorder and I already have plenty of home videos that are greater than 4gb. After reformating, my PC to hdd transfers went much smoother due to the NTFS capabilities. But then I tried hooking it up to my PS3 and it doesn't even register. I found several articles on this issue and can't believe sony limits their machine this way. Furthermore, you can not reformat back to FAT32 on windows unless you set it up in 32gb partitions. No way am I going to do that. Please release NTFS capabilities soon!
I'm waiting for the 320 GB to drop on the market. Western finally started distributing them but there as hard to get as the 8800GT are
Cool, I really wanted to upgrade mine, but wasn't sure if it would dis-continue the waranty. Thank you Sony :D
Big Jock Knew
My 40GB is almost full i only have 6GB left, time to upgrade. :)
I got a 160GB HDD for christmas. I'm glad we can upgrade to any 2.5" SATA HDD as it makes it much easier :D I was running out of room on my 60GB (IE i had about 100MB left), so i really needed to get a bigger HDD.
Good that Sony is encouraging it.
lol..whats funny about what matrix said about is that there are still so many people whole believes in this rumor...
OMFG...YOU FCKING MATRIXSIXAXIS BASTAR.D. GIVE IT...FCKING UP! It's not happening, they can't even run that shlt on the 360's hardware, so stfu.
IF you back up ur ps3, does it copy over downloaded games and demos
@ TRIPLEACE ... Yes. When you do a backup all of your files are copied including pics, movies, music, game saves, themes, settings, everthing gets saved
yeah...i upgraded my 20gb hdd with a 250gb one and its sweet.....i'll never run out of room now...
i hatw 360 fans just buy a ps3 or have your parents buy it just to get one game. i bought a ps3 awhile back because the metal gear series is the best. so don't start rumors. just buy a ps3.
Keep in mind that the price of the HDDs the PS3 use internally are a bit more expensive than the average HDD because they're like the cutting edge SATA type. (for laptop drives anyway) But in the worst case you could just back up all those HD video trailers. I have a 60gb with about 18gbs remaining I know most of that has got to be the 2 or 3 dozen game trailers I've downloaded off the PSN so if I remove those to a back up drive I'll probably be fine for downloads for another year.
You know I don't see how MGS4 coming to 360 rumor belongs on this thread. Anyway upgrading your hard drive is simple and easy. I've installed a 160 gig 5400 rpm Hitachi in my system. I just suggest that you have really small phillips screw driver as the screws can be stripped fairly easy and seems to be a tad over tighten. On Matrix note: I have to believe that MGS4 is being design around the PS3 hardware, media etc. If it does, who cares. Exclusives will find their way to PS3 just as they have on 360. It just amazing how PS3 owners don't whine about Bioshock, Mass Effect games coming to PS3 but if a publisher releases an exclusive for the PS3. We get "oh that'll be on 360 too." Play your system people and love it. 360, PS3 or Wii
Just imagine when the DVR functionality comes to the PS3 in europe especially HD broadcasts people are going to go into a HD upgrading frenzy.
It's a shame when peoples lives are so boring they resort to trolling comments on unrelated stories.
Hey MatrixSixaxis, the rumour is from [XBOXFAMILY.COM] no duh it's fake, xbox family just want people to think that so it drives away potentila PS3 owners. Plus every time one of these rumours come up, KONAMI, and hideo kojima come out and deny the silly little rumours.
Sony is making their system very open to things xbox could only dream to have open, like MODS for UT3, due to xbox live restrictions Epic cant make mods for the 360. 1up for PS3 cha ching.
I have a 250gb HDD in my PS3 and got a USB enclosure for my old HDD. This is one of the many reasons I prefer Sony products, they're always a step ahead of the competition.
@Staticneuron
Why did you comment and not touch on the subject either? Are you admitting to not having a life? Just curious.
Eh if you have loads of porn/movies/etc. then yeah upgrade then lol. And as for the rumours don't bother, its utter rubbish.
Who cares if it's coming out on the 360!!! I'd definitely get a 250gb, with all the content, demos, etc... You'll need it!
@ TRIPLEACE: Sniperwithacause is correct, you can't copy games you bought on PSN (due to copyrights). After reformatting your new hard-drive, you'll have to re-download all your games from your PSN account/s.
OK, ok....firstly @ Staticneuron: YES, apparently I have no life and I'm a born loser!! For anyone who thinks I'm an Xbot, it's hard to be one when I own a PS3! (and not an X360!). I'd only be contradicting myself.
As for the article on the rumour, read the first small 3 paragraphs and it'll say that this first came out of the mouth of a KONAMI distribution rep. I didn't find this article/rumour from an xbox site and I've also found it in several neutral sites as well. It's now become more of a long timed exclusive for the PS3, and the X360 may just get a gimped out version....unless, MS releases a in-built HD-DVD drive in their system by 2009 (as rumoured to be revealed at the 2008 CES this month!). Which may mean they could be using HD-DVD to make games on!
All of this is just a rumour and speculation, but I'm sure we'll see some real answers within the fortnight.
PS. All rumours are just rubbish until they get cleaned up and recycled! :p BTW, am not happy if MGS4 makes it to X360, but after a year...nobody will really care!
HAPPY GAMING TO ALL! :)
@ MatrixSixaxis I apologize. My comment was uncalled for.
I am thinking about switch my HDD but I am curious as to how this data backup works. Where exactly is this information stored? When you put the new HDD in how are you able to transfer your data over? I know it is on an external drive but does it need to be clean of information?
There is a Data Back up tool in the PS3 System, You hook a USB drive formatted to FAT 32, It will back up all your games, demos, and videos and music to it. Switch the hard drive out, Here is the steps, http://www.gamespot.com/features/6176090/index.html?cpage=3
After you have installed it it will ask you to format, then go to the back up tool again and use that same USB drive to reinstall all your SH@t to the NEW big drive, I Have a 160 gig, took only fifteen minutes!
The funny part about that. It is the same exact tutorial on gamespot as it is on cnet.
On the 2GB limit (not 4GB) of FAT32, I think Sony could come-up with a simple system to "split/merge" large files on runtime. Chunks could be renamed to filename.ext.part0/part1/part2... internally. It's only additional 500 lines of code. And a Win32 app to merge these chunks under Windows.
NTFS will require substantial patenting/licensing fees. Even Linux has very limited support of NTFS partitions AFAIK, as it's mostly RE'd iirc. Same reasons your flash-drives never come formatted in NTFS. Windows supports only FAT/FAT16/FAT32/NTFS, so FAT32 stays the only viable option.
Dunno why this article was published, as on the PS3's booklet there are instructions on how to do this.
Btw, next year we'll see the owner of xboxfamily crash his array of xboxes (RRODed, that's why it's an array), yay :)
All you have to do is redownload all of your demos. In the PS Store, it tells you everything that you already downloaded, which can be downloaded again. Also, game saves can be backed up before you swap out the harddrive.
yeah its nice sony allows the 250gb or 500gb 2.5 hdd upgrade instead of having like limited must buy hdd's from them or something lol.
As for the mgs4 statement by post 1 if it even does come out its going to be on at least 3 discs. Unless microsoft reveals internal hd-dvd drive for the 360 it would be a outdated next gen format based on how blu ray sales been doing.
first of all...
that rumor is just a rumor
second, is that its coming from an xbox fansite and they are always starting rumors about mgs4..
third, kojima said its exclusive..
but then again its up to konami isnt it? so i dont know....
but i still think its exclusive...
i swapped out my 60GB seagate HDD for a 160GB seagate HDD about a month after purchasing my ps3 and i still have 93GB of storage!!
i also made sure to get a 160GB seagate with the same specs. as the 60GB seagate. upgrading your HDD is one of the only upgrades you'll ever have to add to your ps3 (unless you dont need the space, of course).
ended up upgrading my 20gig for a 250gig WD, and added 1 terabyte external for my entire dvd collection. Can't get any sweeter than that.
BTW: Jeffro: fat32 will support up to 2tb drives, MS Windows gimped it so people will switch to NTFS. You'll need to find another software that will format under windows (like swissknife, or something). And you can always split your video files yourself if it's necesary, it's not that hard.
with as easy as it is to upgrade the HDD I am surprised more people don't do it. seriously took me about 5 minutes.......just be careful with that ridiuclous blue screw......wow what a pain that thing was
Excellent. It's good that they are taking this stance.
this is so stupid, why not flog a 1GB SKU at a much lower price then?
Forget about the blue screw !! what about the 4 screws that's on the cage of the hard drive ! it took me like 45 min to get them all out!! Sony you DON'T NEED TO SCREW THEM DOWN SO HARD!! Then My Everyone will start upgrading there hard drives!!!

CONFIRMATION:
KONAMI rep denies rumour!
Here's my question: I have added an external disk drive to my PS3 through the USB port. I can play videos from this external disk, but I can't play games from it. Is there a way around this? I imagine this is a speed problem, but it would be nice to get confirmation.
