Sony enthused by Lair PSP connectivity

Posted on September 6th, 2007 at 09:34 EDT

Sony has expressed its interest in the PlayStation 3-PlayStation Portable connectivity present in Lair, according to website Pocket Gamer.

The PSP has already had some PS3 interactivity, demonstrated in the rear-view mirror functionality in Gran Turismo. But, the ability to download and play a game on the PSP via the PS3 is a new feature for the Sony consoles.

In Lair, all the processing and such is done on the PS3, while the PSP sends control signals, and receives video signal. So, although the graphics might be downgraded somewhat, some people may prefer the controls.

A Sony technical insider commented: "It's a nice start. Over time, I'm sure we'll have more advanced features."

As a further example, such functionality could be used to control a game with the PSP that’s being played on the PS3, with an inventory option displayed on the handheld’s LCD screen. Similar controls could also be employed by a second player using a Sixaxis to support a friend. Additionally, mini-games could be downloaded to your PSP to play on the go.

Sounds good, no? Well yes…but then it did when the GameCube and Gameboy Advance was doing all this a few years ago, and is noted by some people to be one of the reasons why the GameCube ended up fighting for second place with the Xbox while the PS2 was storming ahead.

Let’s hope Sony stops repeating Nintendo’s mistakes.

The idea is great, but why play a game at reduced graphics when you could just play it on the PS3?

Why does Sony not just use this for there RPG games, imagine playing FF than having to go out of town. Take your PSP boot up and continue playing the same game on the PSP and saving. Come home and continue playing on PS3!!

I would love this feature. of course certain games this could work for unless they release a PSP2 with sixasis controls built in. Imagine Logo Roco PSP where you tilt the PSP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think this is a great idea. I think people would play with reduced graphics if they are on a trip and can still access their saved data from their PSP. I guess I was under the impression you could already access stuff on your PS3 through the PS3 anywhere with wi-fi??????? Dunno. Either way as long as they have a completely separate division working on this and others still chugging along with the PS3 and PSN I say go for it.

What I would love to see is a game that has a Character that you create on ps3 for an mmorpg, and you can take this character with you on the psp to up grade him. Something similar to poke'mon, except the game on ps3 would be an mmorpg not just a stadium and you can leave out the 5,000 animals too lol. maybe closer to KOTOR? hmmm

I guess I don't really understand the point...you cannot even play through the entire game on the psp....and also, more of a bonus I guess, but you get to use the nub on the psp, which makes me wonder why that wasn't some sort of secondary option in Lair.  Not to mention Sony never said anything prior to the titles release about the remote playability....

No repeating of Nintendo mistakes. You can be sure about that.

So they could develop this feature to the point where we can play PS3 Caliber games remotely from our PSP (granted with scaled down graphics)???????? THAT'S NUTS!! Even if playing full fledged PS3 titles doesnt work out, I'D LOVE to play Calling all Cars or that game where you evolve on my PSP on Wi-Fi. Sony's features are astounding, no wonder they are touting a 10 year lifespan. Seriously, how can this feature be a mistake?
