Sony hires former SEGA marketing VP

Posted on September 17th, 2007 at 13:21 EDT

Sony Computer Entertainment America has confirmed that former SEGA marketing Vice President Scott Steinberg will take up the position formally held by David Karraker from October 1st.

Steinberg first started working for SEGA in 1990 during the years of the Genesis, having previously worked in the marketing business for companies including Eidos Interactive and Crystal Dynamics.

"We are thrilled to have Scott join our team as he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the PlayStation marketing staff and the management group here at SCEA," commented Peter Dille, Senior Vice President of Marketing and PlayStation Network.

"Scott has an ideal blend of experience in digital entertainment and content delivery as well as a proven track record for strategic innovation and implementation within this industry. He will be a critical component for the success of our marketing efforts across the PlayStation brand moving forward."

Former SCEA PR boss Dave Karraker surprisingly announced he would be leaving the company earlier this month, commenting that his departure was a “difficult decision” to reach.

We wish Scott Steinberg best of luck working for SCEA.

I was shocked when I went to see "Shoot 'em up" last night and saw a HS promo before the previews. I agree though, there needs to be more promo

Every invention started with mistakes. Look at the laser disk players :P. then, others built off of those mistakes and created something better, like the CD player we all know and love. Dont down Sega CD, many things were born from that Idea.

well, sega choosed to invest millions in european^s soccer club, for the dreamcast !! common ! we all know how it turned. but looks again, sony and their "it^s living" bullsh***t. !! how much money completely lost (in commercial crap high salary, high cost, totally unproductive and fiasco). it^was just incredible.

well, we'll see (Sega, it's stronger than you)

Lets all be clear here. This is a marketing guy. Has has ABSOLUTLY NO CONNECTION to Sega's history a craptacular harware decisions. He's the man who will be the media mouth peice and decide what commercials we do or do not see. One thing about Sega's heydays is that they had straightfoward advertising. They showcased the games and didn't beat around the bush. The is they had very little in the way of experience connecting with the consumer on a personal bassis.

He would actually be one of the best people coming from SEGA. He knows exactly what "not" to do. I can see him taking this opportunity to showcase his experience and share what he has learned. That, coupled with a fresh eye for marketing the PS3 should be a big boost.

anyone remember "welcome to the next level"?  Did he realy help sega CD/32x/game gear/Dreamcast?  I think all these products either came in too late/early(dreamcast) or were pretty pointless when they were released(sega cd/32x).  More or less, or different tactics wouldn't have helped sell these novel ideas.  Kinda like how the NES Power Glove or lesser known U-Force was unable to gain solid ground.  I never enjoyed Sega's TV mercials.  Just made me want to buy more games for the Nes/SNes/TG16.  The best games for Sega were Altered Beast, Sonic,  Ecco the Dolphin(sorta ghey), Shinobi or Golden Axe.  All of which we PS3 owners can play on our PS3s as a result of Linux.  Do we realy need this guy to head Sony's marketing dept, or is history doomed to repeat its self?  I mean after all...Sega's consoles flopped immediately after the Genesis.  Or was it because of Nintendo's SNES?

Wow, thats a nice job to have. I mean, no matter how lousy of a job this guy does, its still gonna be better than ps3 current marketing campain.

I think its good that someone from the gaming industry gets this role. Hopefuly it will help Sony reconnect with the gamers and reposition PS3 back as a gaming console.
