Sony invites Microsoft to Blu-ray camp

Posted on September 5th, 2007 at 16:08 EDT

In quite a surprising, and perhaps amusing, turn of events, Sony Pictures has invited Microsoft and Toshiba to join the Blu-ray Disc Association.

Don Eklund, executive vice president of advanced technologies was asked which companies they would most like to have in the Association, shortly after an announcement from Acer to include Blu-ray drives with their upcoming PCs.

"We would love to have Toshiba and Microsoft on board," he said. In response to Toshiba's invite, Eklund states, "Tosh can't keep dropping prices much more." He went on to say that even though a format war is won by respective strategies, companies have to look at a better and bigger picture.

"It maybe a strategy for fighting a format war, but for us it has to be profitable."

He went on to state against Bill Gates hotly supported idea for a downloadable only next generation strategy for his system in the works. Eklund responds, "People aren't interested in downloading videos at the moment. The internet is a good way of delivering music but not video," said Eklund. He further states that Blu-ray's longevity.

"Blu-ray has a good 8 to 10 years before the internet catches up."

Even though they were sent an invite---all good deals have many cards under the hat. If Microsoft and Toshiba choose to join Blu-ray, they will not only be alienating investors of HD DVD, but will have to pay an extremely hefty sum, even for Microsoft, separately to Sony.

Bill Gates already revealed that he does not favor high-definition and is a strong supporter of digital distribution. But it sure would be nice to see him take up Sony's generous offer.

they aren't saying that they will put a blu-ray drive in 360's, they're just offering MS the opportunity to include blu-ray drives in their upcoming pc's.  If anything a Blu-Ray drive add-on will be made for the 360 which just means more money to spend to watch Blu-Rays and it will have the same functionality of the HD-DVD drives.  I don't see this effecting the ps3 what-so-ever.  If anyhting it will help the ps3 because Blu-Ray support will expand drastically and demand for ps3's will likewise recieve a boost

Good idea to end the supid war. I would love to get a job with Sony so I can say M$ paid me! That would be awesome Xbox won't get Blu-Ray players cuz it would leave everyone else stranded. Not like it matters though, the add-ons suck anyway

PSN=free=better than live

XMB=easy and fast and highdefinition crispyness=better than dashboard los-res uglyness

PS3=beautiful, wireless, wifi, bluetooth, blu-ray built in, not bricking or overheating, remote access=better than xbox360 always breaking and feeling like a cheap piece of crap in my hands and melting after 10 minutes of being on, also the dvd drive slides out which is not nearly as sexy as the ps3

even if microsoft joined BDA, and started producing blu-ray equiped 360s (which would end up around the same price as a PS3), it's still a piece of sh!t lump of hardware.

Sony would definately be looking at the bigger picture here by bringing M$ into blu-ray. Like the article says M$ would have to pay Sony a hefty sum of money. M$ is a huge company that makes tons, imagine Sony's happiness if they were continually getting a chunk of  those earnings off M$ using their Blu-ray. Thats huge.

I don't think a download only system, the one they mentioned M$ is looking at, would be a huge thing. I definately dont download any movies now and probably won't in the near future but w/e I don't speak for the masses.

Ps3 will no die if 360 gets Blu-ray.  That will be a great step for 360 to utilize the awesome capacity of BD for its games.

They should join or will be joining sometime in the future.

PS3 Gamers...PLEASE buy a Blu-ray movie!!!!    Stick it to Toshiba

This would effectivly end the format war, but it will do very little to the console war.  360 may get an add on player, but wont be getting Blu-ray discs as games until their next generation machines.

max41592 you are a moron, what are you on, your sixth or seventh 360 already, you can keep trying but you're not going to hurt anybodies pride here, microsoft is killing the 360, and HD-DVD, so go ahead and stay on a sinking ship, Moron..

@thegame9733814: max41592 isn't even on his 1st 360 yet. He's just a forum troll who wants to start trouble.

@PS3KillZass231: It doesn't hurt PS3 if Xbox gets blu ray. It helps everybody because it ends the format war and xbox owners will finally get to enjoy blu-ray movies!

@Makai: Yea, a lot of PS2's broke down, but nowhere near as bad as 360. Over the course of several years, I've owned 3. Only one broke down. It's just year two of the 360 and people are going through 4 or more consoles. This doesn't even compare.

I think it would be very profitable for both sony and microsoft.  Clearly blu-ray is outselling hd-dvd why wouldn't microsoft invest in garanteed success.  Also sony will make major dividends of or get paid in a lump sum.  win win.  Only bad thing that I see is that ms and sony are rivals and by doing this deal sony loses some of it's edge.

it dosent hurt sony because it would mean MS has to pay money to sony to make a BDrom drive.. and MS still wouldnt be using it for games.

At the end of the day its all about the consumer.. if Toshiba and Microsoft are able to help bring the public a better video format (which they are) then naturally your gonna invite them on board arent you? Exclusives are pretty much s***.. it works for games, but NOT films. Anyway, we'll see what they're response is.. if they are smart then they will agree.. but knowing Microsoft - they'll probebly decline.

How is it that nobody seems to notice the most important part of this article where Bill Gates admits that his whole part in this is an effort to destroy blu-ray and hd-dvd to help his downloadable movie idea. I want discs. Forget waiting for movies to download that I have to erase to make room for new ones. Terrible concept.

Lol as awesome as this would be it'll never happen, if both MS and tosh joined the BDA everything would become so much better for the consumer and it's clear the consumer is the last thing on every companies mind

Why do some of you think that Xbox360 would crush PS3 if it got blu-ray? PS2 outsold Xbox 120,000,000 to 30,000,000. Xbox360s are breaking down at an estimated rate of 33% while under 1% of PS3s have had failure issues. The PS3 has built in wi-fi, a much larger hard drive, and free online play.
