Sony must define PS3 marketing, says Square boss

Posted on December 5th, 2007 at 10:33 EDT

Square-Enix CEO Yoichi Wada has stated that Sony must look to define its marketing strategy for the PlayStation 3, suggesting that the platform holder is sending mixed messages to consumers when advertising the system.

Speaking in an interview with CNet, Wada commented, “It seems that Sony isn't sure what it wants to do. Is it making high-end electronics or a game console for gamers? I want them to clearly define their console.”

Indeed, Wada implied that he feels Microsoft Corp’s Xbox 360 is the only machine currently marketed as a hardcore video games system, whereas Nintendo’s Wii, despite is popularity, is considered by many as a “toy” more than anything.

“The Wii is the antithesis of the Xbox 360”, he continued. “360 is strictly for hardcore gamers. The attachment rate for the Xbox 360 is much higher than for the Wii.

“People who buy the 360 really like games. I think the current trend is that most people aren't buying the Wii as a game machine, but as a toy."

man this guy sounds like a douch bag, like seriously THE PS3 IS A ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM!!! the reason why the 360 can only do specific gaming commercial is because that's all the half-assed system can do. while the PS3 do all that and more. let me repeat looser ENTERTAIMENT SYSTEM!!!

the 360 is strictly for hardcore gamers.....ur sh**tin me right? more like hardcore spenders to relplace M$ sh***t in a box. i have a 360 and i think it's defective....it was on the third shipment when it released and hasn't broke yet. Hardcore is the PS3....plays games, blu-ray movies, streams movies, music, and photos from your pc to tv....which i guess makes it an entertainment system, but the focus needs to be on games and then tell ppl about all the other wonderful stuff it can do. all sony needs to do now is crush xbox live and M$ is done.

I think ps3 is a platform with high media capabilities, the only thing that is holding it back is not as many super franchises are out like how psone and ps2 did but its early in the life of the Ps3 so i think everyone should seriously judge the ps3 in 2009.

The Xbox360 is only basically a fps system while the PS3 includes all the types of gameplay.. I admit fps is getting old so why are people still buying typical fps games? At least the PS3 keeps on coming up with something orginal and new

When its all said and done, its really all about the games. Yes the PS3 is HD entertaiment  power house, but for all you PS3 haters, the games are coming. Dont worry crashbox 3fixme fans. You can lay your system next to your other sh** box and pretend you were for the PS3 all along.

funny, this coming from the CEO of a GAME company that hasn't released one GAME on the PS3 yet.  console makers should take the brunt in proving the value and worth of a console, but game makers should take some responsibility too.

i thought the same thing, alot of places advertise this as a blu ray player and the way i see it is sony is focusing alot into blu ray and abit into a console where as microsoft is focusing alot of their console and alittle in the HD-DVD.

Sony would easily win if they focus themselves as a console like they did with ps1 and ps2.

Man,this guy sure is clear with his preferences, but he is right though Sony should sit down and decide how to best market the ps3.As a blu ray player,as a games console or as the media hub kutaragi san hoped it to be.I would prefer the third, but as usual it's Sony's call.

they should have a ful 60 second video or less to show the capabilities of the console and exploit the PS3 as a media entertainment system. Not just gaming or Blue Ray player, because not everyone is a gamer and watch movies a lot. Also we got to think of how parents percieve this because a lot of Parents dont want to give their kids a high powered machine like the PS3 because of the things it can do, plus its expensive equipment and NOT JUST A TOY! Kids break things easily so I'll give them something expendable like the 360 or Wii. I have adults come to my house and they see me playing video games, they ask arent you too old to be playing, but when i show them all what it can do and compare them to all types of hardware they get hooked right in. I got 5 ADULTS that are getting a PS3 and not just for gaming. Back on subject Sony needs a clever advertisement that hits the nail on the board that defines their system. Not these adds that keep people guessing. When people hear PS3 they think of gaming, Sony needs to change that whole perspective around,... so I agree with my asian dude on this one.

why do that? if your console can do so much more than play games...then why market it solely as a game console? that is stoooopid, if you do that then you'd reach only the gamers, and there are a lot of other people than gamers, i say inform the people of all the capabilities of the PS3.

What they need to do is seperate the functions of the PS3. They should have seperate commercials/ads for seperate functions. Some people stay away from the PS3 because they see it as ONLY a game console. Some people even believe that the Wii's graphics are just as good or better than the PS3. They need to push their ads into more than just the WWE demographic

Marketing is everything.  I have  a ps3 and agree, the brand message is confusing at best.  If you don't define your image and market, your competition will do it for you.  Being squeezed from both ends by the Wii and the 360 is not where you want to be right now.

I think Sony will eventually define there console as a true, top of the line, quality entertainment center. My take is they're waiting for their Home and Video on Demand services to launch next year before they really push this. Sony consoles have always been about more than games (PS1 as a cd player for your stereo, PS2 as a dvd player, they're not trying something new here) yet more and more people appear to be forgetting this. With the gaming aspect they will likely take the route they should, and simply let the games speak for themselves. Sony selling 110mil PS1's and 120mil PS2's was no fluke. They know what they are doing and they've done unfathomable things in the past (surpassing nintendo and killing sega). Have a little faith, Square, in a proven brand.

Well he is making a good point but he seems to be missing the true point. The Wii is a casual, fun toy and the Xbox 360 (when working) can just about only play games (I am not sure about "hardcore gamers"...but yes that piece of sh!t console is for sucker gamers).  The PS3 is for hardcore gamers, but it offers way more than just gaming...thats why it can't be stamped as being just one thing. And I think Sony just wants the public to know as much as possible about all the capabilities of the PS3. It will still have the best fighters, RPG's, simulators, FPS (believe it or not), Platformers, action advenure and Sports (once devs stop being lazy fu.ck shots).....but its the only console that can offer true HD entertainment (gaming and movies), opt as a PC, DVR, Virtual community (home), etc. The list goes on and on. Mr Wada is just worried about Sony having the smallest install base....but if they would just release their AAA games that all the true hardcore gamers are waiting for and can only be played on the PS3. SE hard work will pay off.

Well I often see people seeing it as a high-end console with some features and nothing more. With their new marketing company, I think we can see what they are planning on showing off as their new marketing takes place.

What PS3 needed as an entertainment system is an LCD display, so that you can play your music without having to switch on your TV just to see what the machine was doing.  I doubt Sony want the PS3 to compete with it's own stand alone BluRay players (although it does) and PS3 is geared mainly for games- the PS brand always has, what's the confusion?  The "problem" that Sony has is lack of decent games...and that's the developers fault (isn't it Square-Enix?)

I love games, and MS would have to pay ME to get a 360. Even then I'd think twice, given the POS that was my Xbox and the 360's failure rate of almost 25%.

god you fan boys are soo ignorant, if theres something you dont like the sound of you refuse to believe it, yoichi wada makes a fair point, as a graphic designer i know this, sony are sending mixed messages to the customer which dosent help atall, it needs to determine what the ps3's main attraction is and i bet 80 % is games and run with it, and using the fact that it has other functions (blue ray, wifi, music, psn, home) as bonuses to set it apart from the 360. there was 1 advert which did this, i think it was the 1 where the ps3 forms shapes which become previews of ps3 games! (have a look for it on GT)

THANK YOU!

that's right, thank you mr. Wada for totally agreeing with me on the position of the Wii. I've been saying it for months that people bought it because it was cheap and because Nintendo did such a good job of selling it to "non gamers" that their games wont sell because most of those people could care less about anything more than Wii sports.

I'll ge even further as to agree that SOny really does ned to tighten up the marketing campaign. but I think he's a little harsh on the concept of an entertainment console. You can still have high end electronic device and game console be the same thing. When Sega brought out the Genesis they had printed right on the machine "HIGH DEFINITION GRAPHICS", I kid you not! they were trying to send a message to nintendo that they were playing on a different level so there's nothing wrong with trying to create a new level of entertainment with a machine that offers many avenues for entertianment.

Sony's true problem is that they're not sending a strong enough message to gamers that the system plays games and they they're doing all they can to produce them, Gaming is the primary core audiance. Pump that and THEN tell them all the other stuff it can do because you need a trojan horse to get it in the dor first before you can sell people Bluray movies. (regardless of the fact that they seem to be selling themselves pretty well of course.)

Mr. Wada  was probably paid by M$. Surely a guy of his stature couldn be that stupid  to just  sit there and talk rubbish about the PS3 and Sony not defining their machine, and that xbox360 is more defined. M$ just  got DIVX and had digital downloads of  movies that shouldn"t even  be paid for. They are like reruns only costing you. The PS3 is a Computer Entertainment System. He knows this we all know this, thats why i think M$ touched him somewhere. PS3 has displayed the ability and capability to do all things in the name of entertainment and science research. Square Enix is part owned by Sony so he can keep talking till he ends up through the door.

As I see it Yoichi Wada has a very good point. The PS3 needs a clear cohesive message that resonates with consumers. The Wii has fun family toy written all over it so consumers understand the message. The 360 for all its faults is very cleverly marketed as a hardcore system, games just games and add ons if you want to pay extra for them. Again an easy and compelling message for consumers to understand. What's the PS3 got? It has/hasn't got backwards compatability, it can play Blu Ray movies, has wifi built in etc ooohh and it can play some games also. This is living???? WTF. Sorry but the adds in Europe are rubbish, I had someone ask me the other day at work what the PS3 actually is because his son wants one for Christmas. He wasn't actually aware it was a games console!!!! Sony have dropped the ball big time over here in Europe, the black octopus advert thingy from the USA campaign is what we need in Europe, not poncy art house nonsense about this is living. What a God awful slogon that is. However much Sony paid a marketing firm for that they were ripped off. Its rubbish.

Square is very important for PS3 and I agree with their opinion - it should be "Play"Station not "Movie"Station.

Square is right because the software sales connect rate for PS3 is far less than Xbox 360 and this is a problem for them. This is why most other publishers are supporting Xbox 360.

Hardcore gamers have gravitated to Xbox 360 or moved back to PC for top end performance. Playstation is not big in the gaming world at the competitive tournament levels and the number of hard core RPG's on Playstation 3 is almost non existent. Its fallen a long way.

Getting the focus back on Games is important for PS3.
