Sony not competing with Microsoft or Nintendo, says Hirai

Posted on May 9th, 2008 at 11:09 EDT

Sony Computer Entertainment President Kazuo Hirai has stated he feels the company is not competing directly against Microsoft and Nintendo in the current hardware cycle, and is instead focusing on the entertainment industry as a whole.

Speaking to MCV this week, Hirai commented, “I think that PS3, PS2 and PSP are all entertainment platforms so I feel that our competition is not Microsoft or Nintendo, but basically any form of entertainment that is competing for the consumers’ attention.”

“So we need to make sure we offer the most compelling entertainment – not videogame entertainment but in entertainment in general. I can’t speak for their strategy but I like to think that we’ve got a very well balanced portfolio with PS3, PSP and you can’t discount the PS2.”

Hirai also recently expressed his confidence that the PlayStation 3 would emerge as the victory in the current hardware battle during its expected 10-year life cycle.

Stay tuned.

that's what's wrong - that's why they're in third when it comes to gaming platforms, they're not focused, they're competing in so many fronts

Righteous is right.  Sony is in third place with pi$$ed off gamers because the lack of focus on the PS3 being a game console.  Sony needs to stop with the empty promises and get back to gaming.  They have other toys like tvs, mp3 players, and such to use as multimedia devices.  I bought a PS3 for a game console because Sony tacked a 3 on the end and called it a game console when their focus was not on games.  They delay everything under the sun that has to do with gaming while focusing on updates to play seasons of buffy on my game console.  They also just said that they could have released Killzone 2 this year but wanted to hold out due to stiff competition from games like Gears of War 2.  Maybe its just me but I thought that Gears 2 was an Xbox 360 exclusive and Killzone 2 was a  PS3 exclusive?  Just what seems to be the competition there?  Its just excuse after excuse with them and their dev teams.  This statement has made up my mind on which console to buy next time around.

Well if your done with your anger spell, ud know that sony has focused much on gaming, 1st most of the delays are not sonys fault but the devs that are working on them.  2nd Sony is focusing on entertainment because thats what the future is, I dunno about you but I DIDN'T pay 600$ just for games, I mean I have always been a huge Sony fan, but they have to compete with the XBox who is giving entertainment other then just games.  but if you want to go xbox720 or whatever in like 2 years go for it, and we will all laugh at  you while we play kill zone, MGS4, and all the other great exclusives we got.

I'm more than happy with my PS3 and I think they've made the right choices.... just look at the Blu-ray choice, now they are on top and HD-DVD is where? oh yeah, they are gone.
I think it's good to have ambition, and how can you claim they don't take care of us gamers with so many good games out and coming soon.  I honestly don't envy any of the 360 or nintendo games (maybe zelda and mario).

Well playstation's have always been entertaiment systems. psx had quality cd player, ps2 had dvd and now ps3 has blu-ray. Now they can just add things with updates.
Nothing wrong with them to try to overtake "entertainment in general" aslong they do games also.

I very much prefer my PS3 as an Entertainment Device. Yes, some delay's have occured, but the games that come out exclusivly have all been good, and in my opinion worth the wait. As for the Crapbox, have fun with the ring of death machine, oh and the fact you have to pay to play online. Don't worry though, I'm sure by the time the x720 comes out M$ will have licensed Blu-Ray from sony, and they will finally be able to develope games that are big enough to compete with the PS3.

I like the fact that Sony built the PS3 as a Multimedia Console and Gaming Console. Whenever I buy something, I like to get as many uses out of it as possible and the PS3 offers so much more than gaming.

At least us PS3 owners can watch Blu-Ray and game on our systems as long as we want without having to worry about our systems crashing like so many 360's with the RROD. Microsoft has to keep coming out with these new stupid chips just to reduce the hardware failure rate.

While Microsoft is still trying to figure out how the heck can they eliminate the RROD (possibly with the Jasper chip), Sony is focused on game development, and when you look at the upcoming PS3 exclusives for this year and next year, you can see that Sony has not forgotten about the PS3 being a gaming console and Sony is just getting started because Sony's big games haven't even come out yet.

After Microsoft releases Gears 2, I wonder what the heck they are going to do next because the only big game for Microsoft in 2009 that I know of is Bioshock 2 and it's not coming out until Q3-Q4 2009. There's also Alan Wake for the 360 as well, but almost nothing is known about the game, and it was supposed to be a 360 launch title and there isn't even a time table for the game's release.

All I've got to say is that Sony will be dominating again with the PS3. With God of War 3, Twisted Metal, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 2, Wardevil, L.A. Noire, and other un-announced PS3 exclusives for 2009, the PS3's future just looks brighter and brighter.

This is either bad spin or someone hasn't mastered the English language yet. The title should read, "Sony not JUST competing with Microsoft or Nintendo, says Hirai"

Anyone at Sony who doesn't think they are competing against Microsoft probably shouldn't be working there in the first place.

@ (self) Righteous

There's nothing wrong with that (for us older people).  I've been into their "everything machines" for some time now.  There's not just more to life than video games (something people on these websites just can't accept).  There's also more to ENTERTAINMENT than just video games (wrap your head around that, why don't ya?).  Is it not common to have a PS3 and something else?  That shows you how much of a Jack-of-All-Trades the PS3 is.  How it's in a class by itself (and not done growing).  I'm not a kid anymore, man.  It's not just about games for me anymore.

*

**Subject change** Not to brag, but I actually HAVE the money to get whatever I want (in this hobby, that is), but I hear you guys complain about how expensive things are all the time and lack of games!  Could you afford it if there were games all over the place?  I don't get that.  You call for "games, games, games", but don't wanna spend 10 bucks for, say....new COD4 maps.  Somebody explain that to me.

I couldnt agree more. I'm 25 years old wife and three kids. I want more then just a gaming system, and ps3 is just that. Ilove the push that the ps3 gives and it looks sexy underneath the hdtv. Its about what is going to be the over view. Dont forget the firmware that comes out, because it adds new things everytime to make a system is better. they do things that they wish they could have with other system.

Which leads to another thing I don't get.  THERE ARE GAMES.  I'm 33 (and grew up on the stuff, like I'm sure you did, too).  Playing since the 8-bit NES, I have all kinds of tastes...I just think people's tastes are too narrow.  Right now online I'm playing GT5:P, COD4, and Eye of Judgement (3 completely different games, I might add).  Offline, I'm playing the excellent MLB: The Show 08 (because online sucks).  I didn't even mention GTA4 (which I will not buy).  I'm also playing Crisis Core on my PSP, which interrupted God of War:COO (which I never finished because of FF7:CC).  With the exception of COD4 and EOJ, all those games are newish/current (and COD4 and EOJ just had major updates).  I'm also in the MGS4:O Beta.  WHERE'S THE PROBLEM?!  Are you guys the type that just play FPS after FPS between Grand Theft Autos, or what?

*

The guy above said that the Sony rep just spun the reality, and I'm sure there's some truth to that, but if they thought they'd be better off with a Game-only machine, they would have made one.  And let me tell ya, if they made a game-only machine that came out a whole 16 months after the 360, I never would have gotten it, because at the time, I had a 360.....AND DIDN'T NEED ANOTHER GAME-ONLY MACHINE.  I got a launch PS3 because it was more than a game.  Not in spite of the fact that it was more than a game.

Solidus_Snake223:  Don't talk to me like I dont have the right to be upset with Sony's lack of focus.  I have owned 4 PS1, 5 PS2, 2 PSP, and 1 PS3.  I have supported Sony from day one but like many others I have gotten tired of the excuses.  I paid more for my PS3 than you did to help support Sony even though it sat on a shelf for almost a year unused.  By the way your comment on laughing at my next choice of console is a little pathetic.  Do you really think Sony will have "all" of those exclusives next time.  Metal Gear 4 is the last one so check that off the list of exclusives.  Killzone if and when it comes out will be so focused on graphics that like the first one its gameplay will suffer and it will be a really short game. Everytime a 360 exclusive is announced it releases on time and is usually a great game yet no matter how much a PS3 game is delayed it still comes out with many flaws.  Microsoft is competing with entertainment as well but at least they understand what its used for first and foremost a game console.

Think back to GDC 2007 when Sony promised to leap ahead in online with the Sony Home unveil. Here we are two years later and multiple delays for a product that appears to have little to no buzz. Where are the achievements? The friends list integration across all games? Where is the long-promised video store? Where are all the other products using and networking with their CELL chip? How come Blu-ray did not result in better games? What happened with Sixaxis and rumble? Where is the complete 1080p game library we were promised? If Blu-ray as they said would be such a catalyst to PS3 console sales, then why have PS3 sales over the past couple of months not seen any lift since the format victory?"

Would seem I hit a button on you.. I dont know what "flaws" your talking about i have had all the PS systems from ps1 to psp as well, and does the fact you paid more for your system make you the bigger fan?  And these delays you speak of, are they all sonys doing? could the devs who make the game be to blame? and flaws? I own Uncharted,Lair,R&C,Warhawk,Resistance, and Heavenly Sword to just name a few exclusives, and i do not see any of these flaws that you say, and that is a VERY bold statement to say no xbox game comes out delayed or with problems.  Look at the HALO serious. you can barely tell a diff between them.  And to bash killzone2 just because the 1st one wasnt good, have you watched the videos on Killzone2? they have taken a few very innovative ideas to change how a FPS plays. wow this is the last metal gear? ok? so? Halo is done, Gear of war 3 will most likely be on the PS3 and there is even talk of Bioshock making its way over. SO please tell me all the exclusives we are missing out on? go get your xbox and have fun when in 5 years you have paid 300$ just for online. I think Sony takes very good care of its people.  I dont seen MS taking a hit on each system they sell which Sony did for the first year and a half of the PS3s life.  So Please take your opinions and the facts and try and seperate them b4 you come here bashing sony. anyone who agrees with me let me know.

i have every system their is and i prefer the ps3 simply becouse it has more functions bd webbrowser and games. the wii is alright but it has 2 many childish games. ive had 3 360's they didint get the ring of death on all 3 the video cards burned out i have a big screen tv with hd the 360 just cant handle it. i also refuse 2 pay 4 online something that should be free. ps3 is the better gaming system if microsoft didn't buy out rights 4 its games the ps3 could easily play them in a couple years when more ps3 consoles are out game developers will swap sides favoring ps3

OK Solidus I admit you do have some points.  I made a comment on how I feel about Sony I did not tell you or others how you should feel about Sony.  Yet I make one bad comment about sony the whole time I have been visiting PSU and you have to attack me about it.  You may feel great about how Sony is treating you but I dont and my comment is my own not yours.  Get your facts strait before calling someone else out about an opinion.  Sony chose to make a difficult system just to push their cell processor further not thinking about how hard it would be to program for.  I actually love Killzone but don't tell me that its taken "alot" and innovated it.  Bioshock took innovation further in a FPS than Killzone will.  You tell me to look at the videos but all I see is better graphics and a cover system everything else has been done before.  So besides the cover system there is no innovation.  FanboybyRights said it all in the post after mine.  Once again fallow what you preach and seperate your opinions from fact and dont try to bash me for my opinion.

yes my whole argument is the fact that you follow your opinion with bad facts. People said the PS2 was extremly hard to program for at first but noone would now.  SO you dont like graphics now? ive played bioshock and it is not very innovative i did not even waste money buying it neither did my friends who are xbox ppl, the cell is not so hard to develop for its just different, and some ppl are scared to have to learn anything new. All I know is when it comes down to it the diff between MS and sony is when MS has 60 million  dollars  they say lets give it all to one game for a few extra lvls, sony takes that money to a dev and makes a awesome game like uncharted. you tell me to get my factsa streight???? you are the one who said MS never has delays or glitches and all of sonys games are delayed full of glitches which is a lie! you say your dissapointed with sony. why? because instead of tossing games out as fast as they can no matter how crappy they are,  they decide to hold the game so it doesnt come out till it was a masterpiece darn sony for that.

ok Solidus look i'm not a Sony fanboy nor a Microsoft fanboy I am a gamer.  My dissapointment with Sony is just different than with Microsoft.  I own every new console and play all of them.  I believe Sony got a big head and paid dearly for it so it has taken them longer to release games.  I said that that when Microsoft states a release date they stick to it and "usually" the game turns out great.  You have to admit that most multiplat. games play better on the 360.  In my opinion you cant really innovate a FPS that much but Bioshock added a lot more with plasmids, tonics, and atmosphere.  You and your friends might not think that it was that great but a lot of reviews and sales say otherwise.  That is your opinion and i accept that.  All I am saying is I love my PS3 but I just wish Sony would concentrate more on games.  I do respect you for stating real facts and your opinions though because I hate mindless fanboys.  Both systems are great and Microsoft has come a long way since the original xbox but competition is great for all of us.  I was just tryin to blow off some steam bro sorry if my comment offended you but it was not a fanboy rant in Microsofts favor.  Peace

"I believe Sony got a big head and paid dearly for it so it has taken them longer to release games."

Wrong. Sony does not have a big a head; Microsoft does. As for delays; Microsoft's strong point is software, Sony by comparison is weak with software. This is why development takes longer for Playstation, PS2, PS3. It has nothing to do with a big head. Sony has always been a hardware company and PS3 is better hardware than xbox 360. The problem with Microsoft is they're always trying to push themselves into every other market that's better off without them. That's why I say they've go the big head.

"I said that when Microsoft states a release date they stick to it and "usually" the game turns out great. You have to admit that most multiplat. games play better on the 360."

Actually most multiplatform games turn out better on PS3: Oblivian, Call of Duty 4, D.I.R.T. and GTA4 are some of the biggest games in their genres and all better on PS3 so really your wrong there.

And I don't mind delays as long as there are good games to play. Uncharted and Warhawk were better than any 360 exclusive last year including Bioshock and I don't need a critic to be paid a large sum of money to convince me. PS3 has delivered tons of great games in year 1 and already is neck and neck with the xbox 360 for games. I can't remember any console have such good games in it's 1st year ever. Upcoming PS3 games are looking great as well so you can't say Sony is neglecting games. They are just trying to suplement games with other things people want / need.

Well, first of all I would like to say that the Halo series is not over. If you actually played the game you would find that it is great (it plays like halo but in HD, which some think is a downfall but halo had a magnificent atmosphere and I'm still struggling to find a game that plays like it).
Also, my main point is that gamers should watch the credits of games as for the last 10 years developers have been putting little movies after the credits that shows the gamer some hint or backstory for a sequal. Like in resistance (how Hale gets rescued by some members of the Sentinel's) there is a movie after the credits in Halo 3, which you will find that Master chief is still alive on the rear half of the ship floating through space. He doesn't die in the crash (He has a bl00dy SPARTAN suit for gawd's sake. How would he die and the Arbitur live? It's a stupid concept) like many people believe (I thought that alot more people than this knew, but after reading all the posts apparently not.) he is in a stasus. Also you see the ship that master chief is in floating towards a planet made of the same material as the halo's.

So, their is going to be another Halo. That's my point.
Also I don't own a xbox360 as it only has 2good games (Halo 3 & Gears of  War). Can't wait for Resistance 2. It will kick the **** out of Killzone 2 graphics and gameplay. Can't wait for KZ 2.... alright.

@Righteous.... how are they third in gaming platforms???  The PS3 has been outselling the 360 worldwide... SINCE LAUNCH!!!   The Nintendo Wii will never sell over 100 million like the PS2 has... I don't see how a company with a total install base of over 150 million gamers is in "third when it comes to gaming platforms"...  I smell fanboy.

@Lukky
Sony allowed Rockstar to back out of their time-exclusive contract on GTA in order to get full-exclusive on their next big franchise.  They have also started new franchises all over the place... LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, inFamous... they don't rely solely on established franchises... thats how they sell systems.  I will have more fun playing L.A. Noire than I will playing Grand Theft Auto X.  That is where MS fails... all their new games focus on the hard-core gamer FPSes, they don't innovate.
