Sony online boss says PS3 is "perfect" for MMOs

Posted on June 23rd, 2008 at 06:56 EDT

President of Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) John Smedley has said that the PlayStation 3 represents the “perfect platform” for the development of Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs)

When asked on what he thought his company would offer Sony’s PlayStation division, Smedley told MCV:

“Probably the biggest thing we can bring to the table is just the experience of having operated an online gaming service for many years. We’re happy to roll up our sleeves and offer assistance anywhere we are needed.”

“We love making online games and we think PS3 is the perfect platform for doing that,” added Smedley.

Smedley previously described MMO titles as a major selling point for Sony’s latest home console, also commenting on his belief that the genre is beginning to make the transition into mainstream gaming.

Stay tuned.

Let's hope they have some real games planned and not just talking up some bs. I would love to see Front mission online come to the states. I know SE is working on an mmo simlar to FFXI but better graphics and obviously diffrent story. Come on, you know all you Star Craft fans out there would kill for a SC MMO.

Lol, I know, right?  I know I'm in the minority when it comes to the type of MMORPG's I like, but I like really hard ones that you can't solo like Final Fantasy 11.  After all, I play MMO's to play with other people (not just against them).  I never understood massive effort toward PvP.  If you want to own people, play an FPS online.  RPG's (by nature) allow you to do more than just kill, but that all people seem to be interested in doing.  What a waste.

I believe we've been told this before but the agency is the only one I know is coming, I bet alot of companies are scared of doing an MMOG because it's something the Playstation consoles have never had and they don't know if it will be successful.

The Playstation has had MMO's 2 of them.  One successful and one not.  The former, FFXI.  The latter, Everquest Online Adventures.  FFXI just released it's 4th expansion.  It was also multiplatform (and CROSS-platform!), allowing PS2 players to play with PC players, and finally, Xbox 360 players.  It doesn't have WoW's subscription numbers, but it's lucrative enough to keep the servers up to this day.  It started in March 2003.  I played it for 3 years myself.  Now I'm just looking for a follow-up from Square.  The game was hard and slower, but very rewarding.  NO MMO ever had more content per expansion.

MMOs take a while to create since it needs alot of time to make a masterpiece

People bashed his statement about consoles supporting MMO's that rivaled WOW in terms of players used.

I don't know, I actually agreed with him. As soon as they get more of their PS2 fanbased to hop on board, and we have about 50 - 70 million PS3 owners, all they have to do is hype up a MMO with something out of the ordinary (like spectacular graphics or something) and get a lot of people talking about it. (Get the hype train rolling)

I've heard criticism over console MMO, but I would prefer a PS3 MMO BY FAR over one of the PC. In this situation, consoles would be able to support MMO's that look ten times better than the ones on the PC, because of the pre-set hardware. The reason WOW has a lot of subscribers is because a PC from the freaking '90s could run the thing. With the consoles you have a pre-set hardware and don't have to worry about that.

With keyboard and mouse support on the PS3, that takes care of control issues, and it would be awesome to finally get a MMO up on the big screen.

Sony just needs to actually create a MMO for the PS3 and pour a lot of resources into it. I don't think The Agency is going to do the job, but I might be wrong. I'm waiting for the MMO's NCsoft is working on.

The Agency is going to be huge.  Unfortunately.  I hate the fact the the first successful MMo on the PS3 is going to be a FPS MMO.  These friggin' FPS's man, they're driving me crazy!

I don't care about MMOs. The agency looks sorta fun, but I don't like the style of the graphics.

this is exciting news, to any fans of ncsoft who's already expressed interest in developing on ps3 (responsible for the likes of guild wars and the heroes/villains series) this is potentially very not a bad thing. i do like wow, but i had to quit, i mean had to, before my soul became utterly inseperable from the realm of azaroth. still absolutely no reason a game like wow couldn't be ported to ps3 from a technilogical standpoint, and with the keyboard/mouse from an interface standpoint. but considering all the addons i've become accustomed to (actioneer, telos, enchantrix, dps, threatmeters etc) i'll give the nod to the pc version until these plugins could be implemented well on consoles. perhaps they could incorporate a few extra features into the console versions of mmo clients (dps meters, auction tracking, coords, what have you). but that's what it comes down to, can the ps3 be home to good mmos? absolutely. but the modding community will still be almost exclusively pc. in summation: pc mmo>ps3 mmo pretty much hands down. 360 mmo? lol, i'd like to see it if only to laugh at ms nailing ppl to the wall with absurd first party hdd prices on suddenly "required" hardware.

At this point I'd settle for a good single player RPG. I'm looking forward to Fallout 3 and, at some point in my lifetime, Final Fantasy 13, but come on!

correct me if i wrong alot of yall saying a mmo wont work on the PS3 but what do you think HOME is without the killing and doing missions. things take time to build mainly since PS3 had a set back Sony thought they would've been On a higher scale if PS3 took off like they hope. these types of talks wouldn't be second guess by you people. with what PS3 have under the hood its capable of running a mmo better then a pc could. wait till HOME come out its going to be like REDBULL for PS3 AND GIVE IT WINGS
