Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), has responded to the company’s recent victory in the high definition format war against HD DVD, citing Blu-ray as "one more reason" for consumers to own a PlayStation 3.
"The emergence of Blu-ray as the de facto high-def standard is one more reason why PS3 is a great value to consumers,” said Tretton.
“The combination of strong sales, Blu-ray dominance and widely-anticipated games all point to 2008 as a breakthrough year for PS3."
Tretton’s confidence in the success of the PS3 throughout 2008 is also shared by a number of industry analysts, including Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter, who said yesterday that he expects sales of the machine to rise by 10 per cent in wake of HD DVD’s demise.

Jack Tretton has a good point. just like back with the PS2 pioneering the DVD back then not may people even knew what DVDs were (like me). then it became the global standard. It seems as though history is just gonna repeat itself with Blu-ray, although this time round its going to be more spectacular and in High Def!
Well see how well this statement is taken during this year and the next. There are a lot of things Sony can do and enabling a series on blu-ray is one of them.
Blu-ray being the standard HD media and a great line up of games coming, seems the PS3 is were it needs to be.
This is great news for PS3 sales, as its the cheapest Blu-ray player out there at the moment, and your also getting a next-gen console.
I really think that now we will see a boost in PS3 sales. I think there were a lot of people waiting for the outcome of this battle.
"Why spend $400 in a console that might have a discontinued format? I want it for gamming, but for that price, I want it for HD movies too."
Now with that doubt out of the way, sales will increase.
"You can take that to the bank!"
Now Sony should reward the PS3 owners with another free Blu Ray film lol
psn id: gingo... ken kutaragi made a perfect decision to add a blu ray player to each ps3 console and i fear for the ps4 because sony may try things a bit less risky which could hurt the sales
sure the bluray will well the ps3 one of the reasons I bought a ps2 was because of the ability of playing dvd.
@gingo what's there to fear? I believe the PS3 is laying down the ground for the PS4's reign with Blu-Ray and CELL all being thrown in at once.
If we have anything to learn this gen is that Sony took the biggest risk outta all 3 Companies in exchange for a bigger payoff down the road.
I dunno, I say that their sales are going to increase more than 10%, not just because of the HD-DVD failure tho, but thanks to the amazing line up of titles droping this year.
@Soild
finally some one agree's amen!
now that's one bump out of the way, next bump 360

i bet those ppl who doughted the ps3 r feeling a little bit stupid.damn u haters
Sony does a great job of looking towards the future with their video game systems. They also do a great job of providing reason of interest in their system for a variety of consumer styles. The main reason why I care so much about PS3 sales, is because it brings the possibility of more exclusive titles to the PS3. I do not want to buy a PS3 if the same game is going to be on a less expensive system and play the exact same way, because developers are trying to get more immediate profit. It has been shown, in my opinion, that exclusive titles have more effort put towards them in development and pushed more to their true capabilities. Whereas, multi-platform games are all made of the same quality, because developers do not want to take sides.
@MatrixSixaxis, you can't take it to the bank like I can take it to the bank!
@Psydistix is right thts the only reason i care bout sales of ps3 more ps3's sold there will be people more willing to do exclusives for the ps3 but i cant see how blu ray winning the format war will increase sales by 10% but i hope im wrong coz i dnt know alot of people getting a ps3 just coz its a blu ray player but GO SONY FOR THINKING BEYOND THE GENERATION!
This is yet another reason why I am so happy I purchased a PS3. This will help sales of the console for sure. Not only is it one of the cheapest BluRay players out there, but it's also a next gen console. Who can top that? Way to go BluRay!!!
For those of you who think that Blu-Ray's victory in the format war will have no effect on PS3 sales rising 10 percent in the coming months, it will and here's why:
Because of Blu-Ray's success, it gives parents another reason to get their kids that have been begging them to get a PS3 to finally buy a PS3 for them. The parents can make their kids happy by buying them the PS3 that they want and the parents can have a Blu-Ray player to use when they want to watch Blu-Ray DVD's.
When Sony made the PS3, they were thinking of the future and that's why the PS3 is going to dominate. The Wii is almost always going to be selling like mad because it's so cheap and it's appeal to more casual gamers, but there is no doubt that the PS3 is going to outsell the Xbox 360 in total units sooner or later because of Blu-ray and blockbuster PS3 exclusives coming.
Once again this is how I'm starting to see things:
*Home* - Who knows? When it will arrive or if it will be sucessful? *LBP*? Same. *MGS4* - Delayed. *Haze* - Delayed - If it's not a Halo killer or comes close it will be a failure due to the delays. *Killzone 2* - It might look great, but I certainly hated the first one, so why should I look foward to this one? *FFXIII* WHO REALLY KNOWS? *GTP* - I guess people are looking foward to it, but I'm not a racing game fan at all, it's more like a simulation not a game to me. *GTA4* - 360 has more content. So really? How good are things looking? It might have started selling better then the 360 but I'm seeing Too Human, Fable 2 and Gears of War 2 in the future of the 360. Can you guys truly tell me their exclusives can't compete with ours?
good point. i wonder what it would have been like if bluray lost??
great, bring on all studios, and Star Wars......<A>
I hope sales increase by more than 10%
It'd be great if Sony would give away a free Blu-ray of choice to each PS3 owner, more so for the early adopters who are getting crapped on right now.

Funny thought. Unless MS wants to stay with DVD9s next-gen, they'll have to come out with another format or pay Sony to use Blu-ray.
