Sony sympathise with early PS3 adopters

Posted on October 8th, 2007 at 05:01 EDT

Ray Maguire, Managing Director for Sony Computer Entertainment UK, has stated that he feels the 40GB PlayStation 3 is the next logical step in an evolving platform, but conceded that he understands early adopters may feel “cheated” by the arrival of cheaper hardware.

"I think it's natural to feel that way, of course it is," Maguire told Gamesindustry.biz.

"The difference between our industry and many other industries is that if you're selling cars or houses the price goes up steadily. Consumer electronics only goes one way and that's downwards."

Maguire went on to describe the advantages for early adopters of new technology, observing that it allows them to experience the latest technology months before the mass market catches on.

"One thing is common amongst the entire market for consumer electronics and that is that there are early adopters like myself who will spend GBP 10,000 on a plasma TV that is worth GBP 3000 within three years. That's the way the market goes”, he said.

"What do they get for that? They get six months of enjoyment of the product before anybody else gets that ability to play those games.”

Lastly, he viewed the introduction of the 40GB SKU as a natural evolution for the console, denying criticism that it would lead to confusion among the different models available in each region.

"As products evolve the offerings change because they have to adapt to the needs of the consumers but I don't think it's been particularly confusing in six months to go from stand alone, to a bundled proposition into a low price entry level model.”

"We also have to remember that consumers don't search around the world for different configurations. We are a global company but we have to act locally as well."

The 40GB PS3 launches this Wednesday.

Next: Rumor: Japan to get a 160GB PS3

Rumors have surfaced stating that Sony may have yet another PS3 SKU on the way. According to QJ.net, Sony has registered a new model labeled CECHG06 (160GB PS3), similar ...

First.  Instead of sympathising on how he feels bad about early ps3 owners, how bout he sends a memo to director of SCEA and tells him to get the ball rolling on better marketing and advertising.  We all know it sucks now and also tell him to make an announcment about the 40gb ps3 in the US.

This just feels like a weak justification - a kind of "look on the bright side" alternative that's not really practical. Instead of making such remarks, he should have focused on promoting future products and features. This "feel sorry for yourself" approach only leaves a lot to be desired from Sony's PR.

However, I'm sure no one has any regrets about owning the console before everyone else, right?

Personally I think those who got hardware backward compatibility got a machine that will be sought after in years to come. Those of us (like me) in the PAL regions only got the PS3 without the PS2 CPU but with the necessary GPU and software based emulation which is only half as good.

Those who get this cut down 40GB model without CPU or GPU meaning that they will never get BC...well...bad luck.

I'll keep my half spec model and try and import an earl Jap model with proper BC later.

P.S I agree with DJRussel - The Swear Word Filter filter is as useless as tits on a bull - it does bugger all. I can drop a turd and swear all I like in this gaping VD festered vaginal cavity forum but dare I say ...."he-llo kind sir" and oh no thats naughty. These penis sucking piss drinking poofters are raving poofter gimped bum burglar jism sucking fanny gobblers with a fat gay butplug shoved square up their hairy bottoms screwing the bejesus out of each others sloppy rectums the Sluts! yes they are bum hole pushing fart Sluts blowjob giving kunts! so Christ they dont care what us nazi racist gutter mouths write so long as its not the simple word ...."H-ello" ... try it... just type He-llo. What ever you do dont type the word "D-aisy" or "flowe-r" else youll be banned for life!

I think they should keep the 60GB model in Europe, dropping the price to £349 or £299.

If this new unit sells more systems, that's good... but it strikes me as a very confused marketing strategy. They already had a cut-down system (the 20GB model) which they decided not to sell in Europe because they felt people wouldn't want it. Now they're back-tracking.

I'm extremely glad I got my 60GB model when I did.

As an early adopter, I knew what I was getting myself into.  But what I didnt know was the downside to adopting way to early.   No games (That I cannot already get on my 360 and that are worth a darn), do not like the BD movie format.  The only reason Im keeping the thing around is because there might be a game I actually may want to get  in the future.

I don't regret buying mine on day one.  Dropping the price only gets the user numbers up which means more dev support, so I'm not disappointed at all.  If Sony wants to send me a few free blu-rays to make me feel better though, I would gladly accept them.

I for 1 don't feel cheated in the least about having bought my PS3 system (20 GiG at that!) I got it in November. And I DID feel cheated that when I bought the system that there was very Software for it, and there were not very many people online to play with when I got it. So I feel that the more SKUs that come out now only stregthens the PS3 Userbase and makes it more enjoyable for everyone (By the way, I heard rumors that they're coming out with a 22Gig system in Japan for only $19.99! and will have a singleaxis controller and 1 USB 1.0 slot, and use only dialup!!!). See?, now don't you all feel better?!

I don't feel cheated at all - in fact I feel sorry for the later adopters getting a cut-down machine. I wanted to see a full spec'd machine selling for less, but I do understand as it stands at present Sony just cannot justify losing so much money on each machine just to get it on the market for a similar price to the 360.

I don't feel cheated in the least bit. I'm happy with my PS. I just hope Sony will get on the ball and start giving us Some AAA games! How hard is it?! MS is kicking our asses all over the place with the greater third party support and the love of the masses while we continue to get shafted by crappy ports, and mediocre First party games. Lair and HS were great, but horribly short. I'm still worried about picking up multiplatform games for the PS3. I refuse to get DMC for 360, but games like Conan and Kane and Lynch? How do I know it'll be on the same playing of the 360 or better when every other Third party game I've played are just ports?! Please, Sony, step your game up!!! Sorry about the ranting....

I bought my 20GB PS3 last December and have had not regrets about buying it.  Most of my friends along with my brother who all have 60GB PS3's actually like my solid black front better than "bling bling" chrome front.  Bought a $30 wireless game adapter so online connectivety is snap.  $100 saved for future games.  PS3, it's in the box!!!

There is no reason for this article.  Early adopters got what they paid for...  I enjoy everything about my PS3 and have NEVER regretted my decision to jump onto the Sony boat.  What Sony needs to focus on is getting the damn games out (helping the devs as much as they need.....lord nows EA needs all the help they can get...but I think their problem is that they just don't care about crappy programming).  Then they need to focus on Advertising/Marketing.  All you see now is the darn Xbox commercials (yes I have two 360s).  If you are an early adopter and trying to say Sony owes you some sort of compensation, you are just trying to get something for free.  Different SKU's always emerge on all platforms...  This is not the Iphone where they just dropped the price and changed nothing... there are definitive changes in the system itself to allow the lower price.

I Highly doubt that the $399 40GB model will be announced in the US.

This is mainly due to the huge slump of the US dollar.

399.00 USD = 284.138 EUR

Now that isn't exactly 399 EUR, is it?

I would expect , if the 40gb is released in the US, to be around $450. which again is close to the 60GB model, but that one is gone.

So my say is

40GB model, $450

80gb model, $550 (after removing the stupid motorstorm)

It has nothing to do with feeling cheated! I paid 600 bucks for my system and it's worth every single penny for me. It has everything to do with keeping the PLaystation brand strong and confident looking. The 40gb makes it look weak.

What it comes down to is people are already confused by the numerous SKUs. Every person I know who already has a PS3 agrees it's just a BAD IDEA, put that money into lowering the price of the 60 or 80gb!

I dont care how much I paid - what is done is done. What would be nice is for the early registered adopters to be invited first into the Home beta.

I think lowering the price is important to attract some more users. I dont think the package that they came up with will work unfortunately and Im worried that another Christmas with lower sales than Wii & Xbox 360 might cause irreperable damage to Third Party Developer support. Sony doesnt have enough first party games to really keep me happy so it forces me too spend even more money buying a second console. I dont want to waste more money and I dont have the room either.

I agree with Alpha2 and everyone else that I speak with. This 40GB offering is half baked. They should have done the right thing with the 60GB or 80GB models. BC is not an option it should be standard, and they need to fire the marketing people who where responsible for promoting Playstation. Jeeze it kills me to see the biggest brand in gaming fall this far. Its utterly unbelievable.

"Lastly, he viewed the introduction of the 40GB SKU as a natural evolution for the console..."

Shove it, Ray.  Removing USB ports, backwards compatibility, and adding a smaller hard drive is the EXACT OPPOSITE of evolution.  I'm so glad I got my 60GB and not have to deal with Sony's BS they're pulling now.

40GBs shouldn't even be allowed on a PS3, let alone the 20GB.  I have about 20GBs left on my 60GB, mostly from demos.
