Regular shipments of DualShock 3 incoming, says Sony UK
Dark Sector Devs lending hand in BioShock DevelopmentShortly after the announcement of the partnership between DivX and Sony, the PS3 had a firmware update that enabled the system to seamlessly play DivX files. Sony continues to waste no time in capitalizing this new found relationship as details of a new agreement between the two companies have surfaced.
Both companies have come to terms of a deal that would have DivX be the exclusive format for all titles under Sony Pictures Television's library. This would then be released as downloadable videos that would be playable on DivX certified devices (the PlayStation 3 being one of them).
"We are dedicated to finding legitimate outlets for our content and to that end are excited to be working with DivX to provide retailers with an expanded ecosystem for the digital distribution and playback of our digital media," said Sony Pictures executive VP of Digital Distribution & Mobile Entertainment, Michael Arrieta.
This would mark the first time the DivX format would get the chance to release high-quality Hollywood content. The spokesperson for DivX, Kristina Weise, emphasized that the video files would be on a download-to-own basis but they would have some sort of digital rights management built into the files to prevent piracy. Weise also said that the movies would be available in DivX format on the same day as the DVD release of each title.
Sony Pictures Television is made up of companies such as Screen Gems, Columbia Pictures Television, TriStar Television and Columbia TriStar Television. Shows under the Sony Pictures umbrella include Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, The Real Ghostbusters, Jeopardy!, Dawson's Creek, and Seinfeld.

psn id: gingo.... wow i'm very impressed by sonys quickness in getting this deal done i hope to see this content soon becasue some unofficial divx filoms are rather shody and are of poor quality
great news ^_^
sweet!!! great to hear now they just have to do it!
Wow, this is very cool! wonder is they will offer the movies in 1080P, that will take long time to download...
This is a good move on Sony's part. Even though digital downloads are still years away from being the norm, Sony has to get their foot in the door to avoid falling behind future competitors. Looks like my hard drive will need an upgrade sooner than I thought.
Would the cost of downloading movies be significantly less than purchasing the DVD or BD?
If the majority of the movie distribution turns to the digital world, then I believe one way to persuade consumers into physically buying one at the retail stores is to release it with a collector's item such as a book-end (a la LoTR) or a Man-kini perhaps?! (Borat!). It would have to attract people anyways.
Who knows, it may have to come down to having a signed autographed disc (by actors or directors, etc.) in the future!!!
he how do you get the themes on to the ps3???help
Better late than never...Sony has just entered the real war... This time they find themselves opposed to NewsCorp's FOX and Disney studio's.
Main benefit is cost - you can buy or pay as you would a rental - your choice. Maybe rent for a day and if you like it upgrade to full copy.
Second benefit is portability... If there is a movie you want to watch on TV then great download it to your PC, console or media center. If you want to watch it on the road then just copy it to your Laptop, iPod, PSP, PDA, Mobile Phone...whatever and it will be resized automatically.
For 90% of movies, doco's, TV shows, news, or sporting content this is definately the way to go.
Oh joy, another DRM I'll have to crack to enjoy my movies.
I mean, umm, I don't condone piracy and DRM rocks.

@gingo: A lot of DivX films are shoddy quality because the encoder uses DivX because he thinks it makes it quality or he just does not have to system resources to encode movies. I love aXXo's work though.
DaveW - NewsCorp has more invested in this area than Sony does. Electronic distribution is NewsCorps home territory - they can take it from here.
Disney + ABC TV network along with Viacom (Paramount & MTV) has also partnered with Microsoft so what Im saying is Sony has their work cut out as they where so preoccupied with Bluray they failed to build proper electronic distribution mechanisms. Infact Sony's own MGM download distribution will also be done by Microsoft now...
Apple of course is a contender and has a good headstart in this field. But Sony has closed down ATRAC - thats all over now... Again, Sony's priority was Bluray (over gaming and over electronic distribution) and as a result its making a last minute dash to re enter - as I said better late than never.
I'm very very glad to see PS3 finaly getting some of these features, DIVX is not perfect but its a start - the only question I have is when will Home be up and how long is this going to take to get these features? Next week, next month, next year? Im just reminding everyone that the clock is ticking...
Xbox Live past 10 million users last week but hey - take your time Sony...
Now, thats cool. I thought whenever Sony did their VOD service, the movies you purchased would expire after a x number of days but this is cool. Even though this would probably be SD, I wonder this cut into BD sales. I guess we'll see in the future. Now I need to figure out what size HDD I need to upgrade to!!!
Hey that's tight
@ The Cleaner ... Wouldn't Viacom and any other company with digital media eventually bring there content to the PSN as well. The userbase is close to 10mil at the moment and will be at 20mil when 2008 is over (My prediction not anybody elses). It would only make sense for them to make their content available to as many consumers as possible to expand their pockets, er.... profits.
so will this go along with that new video downloading feature under PSN. eh eh.
congrats to divx. should be good.
who's this know it all cleaner mof.
I am fully surprised by this move. Congrats to both divx and sony.
COME ON DE GINGO WE LOVE YA!!!!!!! this should be good!!! Now U!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a very bad idea SONY. for 1, the PSP cannot in it's current state play DivX videos. The coolest part about downloadable videos in this form is the idea of transfering it to your PSP to watch on trips.
Unless SONY can fit Divx into both versions of PSP, i'd rather they use mp4!
@Mickice - but don't you think they already took that in consideration but probably slating it for a different time to address? Think about it this is the first console to ultilize DivX.
Seriously. Stop with this "psn id" junk. The forums is the place for that...
So,this means they will release complete movies as downloads?I'm confused.
