Sony to re-evaluate buying exclusives

Posted on May 30th, 2008 at 13:37 EDT

Over the last year, PlayStation fans have heard and felt the aftershock of a former exclusive title going multiplatform and looked down upon it. With Sony taking the stance that they would no longer buy exclusive opportunities and instead coerce companies into developing for them exclusively with their consoles raw power, gamers became uneasy.

According to Kaz Hirai, we can now all rest easy as Sony has started to re-evaluate the idea of buying exclusive properties for their console. In a recent interview with the ThreeSpeech blog, Hirai had this to say when questioned about Sony's past stance on the subject.

"That’s something that we can re-evaluate, but it’s also something that the publishers need to make a business decision on. Ultimately, it becomes a dialogue – if it makes sense for them to go exclusive, that’s a business decision that they need to make. But generally speaking, because of the investments that publishers need to make in this round of hardware, it’s going to be more difficult for publishers to make that decision. Where we come into the picture is to have that dialogue with the third-party publishers, to say: “OK, what can we do together if it’s not exclusive that makes the PS3 version of the game more compelling for the consumers than any other version?” Let’s face it – all the games are coming out on a Blu-ray disk which has 50Gb capacity, so let’s put in some making-of content, or maybe additional levels. Also, it really becomes important for the first-party studios to really come up with some envelope-pushing, genre-defining content."

It will be nice to see Sony push a little harder to either keep exclusives in-house or to bring new exclusives under their wing. A lot of us are waiting to see more developers take advantage of the extra disk space provided within the Blu-ray format. Question is... does Sony have the money like Micorosoft does and are they really THAT willing to take it that far? Instead of exclusives they need to pay the developers more money to make sure their damn games work on the PS3.  I'm tired of these games that are buggy more-so on the PS3 than on the 360.

Very interesting. I never liked the game of 'bribery' but if it gets quality games onto the PS3, I have no choice but to agree. I don't want any more crappy ports, or half-assed games.

I do miss exclusives that is a big part of sony console. I would start bribing to get exclusive if I was sony.

@ dreamsofanarchy:   Im sure sony has a lot of money remember they have the tv line up home theathers, radios for cars and other car accesories, they also have the movie studio. and the vio computer line up.  So im sure they have money to just pay developers off for a whie

of course they should get exclusive games and keep em and keep the 360's hands off the games,im very very mad when i heard gta was going to the xbox and if the ps3 wants to do good in selling then they have to have good games so people could buy the console to get or play the games tat our coming out

@carl

They couldn't have done it recently. Their gaming devision was under the gun and there was no way they were going to reallocated their funds from another division without garunteed results.

I am of the opinion that they really don't have to. Let them go MP. Eventually a dev is going to want to seperate themselves from the masses and produce exclusives for consoles.

With their inhouse it would only be a matter of time when devs feel embarrased at what they bring to the table. We already have awesome performing  graphical powerhouse exclusives on the PS3. It is already apparent to gamers that some devs look like they are slacking off.

Sony needs some more new IP. SO instead of paying for established titles they need to start pulling strings to get some freash names out there.

Whether they pay for them or not, they need to make sure that exclusives are worthy products. I mean, we all rejoiced when Haze became exclusive, but let's be honest - would any of us really care now if it went to the 360?

Now, titles like Ratchet, Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, Gran Turismo and Killzone - which have historically pushed the PlayStation hardware to its limits - those are the ones we need to keep.

Then again, it's not like the loss of exclusives is all one-way traffic - there are plenty of previously 360-only titles that have come the other way, with BioShock arguably being the biggest of these so far. These are also titles where Sony need to bust a gut to assist developers and ensure that the PS3 gets the best version.

@kidkotic2001

just because sony owns other divisions and make a good profit from them it doesnt mean they will go millions on the game division otherwise the corp could fall down.

@Paranoimia

Well, Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, Gran Turismo and Killzone are developed by first party studios (studios owned by Sony), so, why should we worry about lossing these titles? I don't get the idea of your statement.

Im glad to see they are being realistic here and not throwing tonnes of money at games which they just can't compete with the likes of MS.

But the good news is...maybe they can actually persuade developers to give the PS3 version more content and maximize the use of BR. Why have it if its not going to be used? So, Im glad to hear of this push from SONY and lets just hope the devs continue to maximize the consoles capabilities and not get lazy about it just because they are adding extra content.

In the end everyone wins, provided its a good game.:)

 Third party developers need to utilize the raw power of the playstation 3 and Sony needs to be more upfront with these developers and tell them that they expect no less but to fill in the 50 Gb capacity

@ pirulee - read what I said again: "Now, titles like Ratchet, Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, Gran Turismo and Killzone - which have historically pushed the PlayStation hardware to its limits - those are the ones we need to keep."

i.e. The ones that get the best out of the machine, and not the decidedly average exclusives like Haze, which are not much better than many of the shoddy ports. The Ratchet games (as mentioned), and Resistance - from independents like Insomniac, who choose to remain exclusive and produce quality titles.

i keep hearing about competing with the games from MS what games HALO 3 is trash not even next gen ... forza is not GT5 ...GEARS is cool but its on a DVD so its going to be short AGAIN theres nothing that MS has. ps3 is doing just fine ps3 has WAY more qualty games than xbox circle by FAR and its only getting better

@Solrac

I hear that a lot and look at companies like Valve. They piss whine and moan about how they hate the PS3 and blah blah blah.  I don't think utuliezing the PS3's power is going to happen until way alter on.  Look at how long Final Fantasy X took for the PS2 and then to top that God of War 1&2.  I think it might be a couple years before anyone can really see what the PS3 is fully capable of.

Sony cant use there money mroe wisely than M$. See for all the money M$ thorws at people to make exclusive titles. just how many systems is Ace combat going to sell after we just had like 6 of them on PS2 in it's last year and a half? It's a stupid investment to buy the game just to keep it away from Sony, Add to that their need to buy every company that even remotly makes a decent game for them atleast one and they;re just throwing good money after bad, I mean seriously how great a decision was Rare? But If sony is smart and invests in a company like Ninja Theory When they see another good idea comming from them they can snag a great title that sells at a steady clip for years.

Well, I think exclusive games are a big deciding factor when picking consoles.  If you're a really hardcore gamer, you'll probably have all 3 of the current systems, but if you only have money for one system, which system will have the most "must have games" available on it is probably the one you'll go with.  I think that's what really hurt Sony the first year of release was just a lack of good, exclusive titles.  If a gamer can buy a cheaper system and play the exact same game they can on a more expensive system, chances are they will.  I bought a PS3 because of all the extra features (Blu Ray, free online play, etc.), but for someone who just wants to play games, they're gonna ask themselves which has more games that they want to play and which one can't play those.  I'm glad to see them finally seeing the importance of this.

actually i beleive that dev's dont care as much (not all dev's) about making quality games as much that they do just making profits, so THAT is where sony's las scheme would have failed the most, cuz yes the ps3 does have amazing power but if thats not wat some dev's are looking for then.....,i think most dev's just want to do a game but dont want it to behard or anything, so they look to 360, and if this is the case, sony probably should start paying money hungry dev's to go with ps3 instead.

sony has plenty of money they are one of the biggest companys in the world.  the bought guerilla, which is pretty much the same thing as buying exclusives, they also have a deal with insomiac hence all of the exclusives sony just needs to get more developers to go exclusive

@Paranoimia
All the games you mentioned... their developers don't choose to be exclusive.  Sony owns the rights to the IPs they make.  i.e. Resistance and the Ratchet series are both owned by Sony.  That is why Insomniac is considered a second-party developer and not a third-party.  As far as Jak, Uncharted, Killzone and Gran Turismo, those games are all made by first-party developers... and guess what, all owned by Sony. That means Sony CAN'T lose exclusivity.  Same with Heavenly Sword... Ninja Theory might not be a Sony Studio, but Heavenly Sword will NEVER show up on the 360, because Sony owns the rights... same reason Halo will NEVER be on PS3... even though Bungie made the game, M$ owns it.... get what I'm saying?

I hope Sony starts to buy exclusives. Think of what the PS3 would be today if GTAIV, Assassin's Creed, DMC 4, & RE5 were ALL PS3 Exclusives. The 360 would never have even sold 13 millions copies if that were the case.  Hopefully Sony will learn from their mistakes and spend some money so later they can make some money. At least we still have MGS4!

No, its against all the ps brand is. You get quality games when you deliver quality product. Now if they buy games it would mean that they are uncertain of their products quality something that is far worse then sharing games with other consoles. When you go against something you should stand firm or accept your a hypocrite.

So what are Sony doing, buying exclusive titles for the PlayStation3 or buying exclusive conent for multiplatform titles, I don't get it...?

Come on Sony - just buy some exclusive titles as we could certainly do with some decent games right now. This year has been a non event for PS3 so far.

Buying extra content on games isn't the same. All we will end up getting is stupid bloatware.

Sony just realizing this is bad on there part. They should have been focused on this and more games would be exclusive and PS3 would be doing better. In all honesty I can say that Sony won't do well this gen. Sadly, MS has this all planned out throwing money at devs and going multiplat will make people buy a 360 because its cheaper than a PS3 and has a stronger online base and MS knows this.
