In the early 90s, one of the biggest technological anticipations was “virtual reality” - the ability to immerse yourself in a videogame without any extra peripherals such as controllers. As we nearly off the first decade in this new millennium, the notion of VR will not pass over the videogame industry without leaving a lasting impact.
With that said, Sony has introduced a new motion sensing technology that could be a major touchstone for the PlayStation 3 in this generation of gaming. With no official name given to it, this impressive technology uses the PlayStation Eye component to track the player’s head movements without the need of any additional devices.
It is said that this technology could be used as a device for FPS games to allow players to lean over corners for better vantage points, or even implement into boxing games such as Fight Night to duck and dodge those painful blows.
While this will clearly be a PlayStation 3 feature, Sony has not yet revealed any games that will support such technology nor have they given a release date.
However, PlayStation Universe will do our best to bring you up to speed on any details as they become available.

Yep seen the link and guess what... its NOTHING new. The PS2 could do the same thing with the Eyetoy and Studio:London proved it with a tech demo YEARS ago. It was never implemented into games because it was of limited use. The Eyetoy isn't new tech and niether is its motion sensing capabilities. It was after all designed to capture motion!!! Rubbish article by a rubbish... and I shudder to use this word in connection with Sarad... journalist.
Well as far as i know there wasnt a fps that was played to with the eate toy so this is NEW to PS DUH!!!!!!!
Makes sense I have seen articles about this back in 2005. Something about the speed of the camera in combination with the speed of the PS3, that helps it perform such tasks.

I've heard about this somewhere before, but must have forgotten over the years. This isn't anything new. If you ask me, it's just some PR crap to get people interested in the PS3. That sounds like what the eyetoy was made to do, now doesn't it? And RotaryMatt, show me this FPS you are talking about. I could almost guarantee this won't be happening anytime soon because nobody will fork out the extra money for an Eyetoy and a game. There are enough FPS games out there, don't you think? I remember hearing about this stuff before the PS3 even came out, seriously, and that was in a newspaper. All I'm trying to say is Sony didn't "unveil" new technology, unless of course we're talking 3 years ago or more.

bluesuedeshoes...lol! You're sooo right! Eye Toy is old news, they're just coming up with other ways to implement it. All it does is monitor pixel changes on it's sensor (not the screen), and then use recognition algorithms to map this to a body part/face etc.

So what if this was shown years ago? I doubt the PS2 had the processing power to put this in games. You could dedicate a core to this in the PS3 and still have 6 left for your games. Tell me no one will implement this. What FPS would AT LEAST try it out for their game. All those stealth and tactical shooters would be amazing with this.

What they need to bring out is the motion sensing controllers for the PS2 to go head to head with the Wii and slow them down. Imagine how much life that would breathe into the PS2. It would have fresh games until the Wii died.
So i feel it is unfair to slant a writer who is merely reporting on a possible innovation with an existing/older peripheral. Many ppl rubbished the idea of the Wii and the thought that ppl would happily stand in front of their TVs swinging their arms and hopping about. Many millions of consoles later, who's the one laughing?
Before ridiculing a potential new gaming concept, or haranguing the writer who brought it to our attention, perhaps it would be best to just wait and see what happens. As it is, using the EyeToy to lean around corners in a stealth game, or dodging punches, why not? It would be an interesting way to play. Or are we really afraid of change like that, when gaming isn't just about two analog sticks, 4 buttons and 4 shoulder triggers anymore?
i saw a video for this on N4G. it sound cool but when you think about it all it will do is make you sick to your stomach. i remember being in an arcade once and they had this thing you stuck your head in and you stood on a big platform. and you had to turn the camera by turning your body. ugh. it made my stomach sick.

Here we go again!!! Firstly I used to work in the games industry as a minor league programmer, nothing major. Started out debugging on the N64 but hey there you go. Couldn't make a living out of it because so many UK dev's went to the wall. Firstly Sarad makes some hyperbolic comment about Virtual reality when the Eyetoy has sod all to do with Virtual reality. The reason this tech wasn't implemented during the PS2 era as far as I'm aware was because of its limited use. Peeking out around corners now etc. Now maybe I'm the only person who moves around and squirms while playing games sat on my sofa but the issue with the tech is mainly that it can get in the way of playing the game. Studion Soho and others toyed with this sort of idea years ago. I stand by my comments. ITS NOT NEW TECHNOLOGY. If it makes it into a game then it'll be new use or implementation of an old technology in a game. I'm not going to insult any of the other posters on here because its beneath me, and trust me it'd be easy with some of you!!! lol.

There's a youtube video of the dev who did the code for this and he put it into the free code to use bin for any dev to use.
It works the exact same way as the wii head movement capture in everyway.
Yet this works out better in that you simply need the eye toy and two IR leds on a pair of glasses, thats it. and the codes from that.
Oooh ..."virtual reality" ... sounds like someone is stuck in the 1980's. Sarad, VR came out in & appeared widely in pop culture (eg: Neuromancer) and video games in 1983... not the early 90's as you've stated.

I do know what head tracking is thank you very much and as I said it it of limited use in games. Clever though it is! If I turn my head fully left to see whats at the side of me the picture might move on my TV screen, but unfortunately my tv screen won't move. Hence the reason in the 80's people pushed for VR goggles.
I don't know sometimes its like talking to people from another planet. I can't believe how many illiterate and mis-informed fan boys there are on the internet. I like my PS3 and I like my Wii and every now and then when it works I like my 360. However some of you lap up any hyperbolic rubbish posted on this site, even when its badly written and makes no sense. I saw a head tracking demo down at Sony's London offices in 2005, on the PS2. Many devs at the time did. The Eyetoy is a cool gadget in its own right but like the Wiimote is limited fudementally because its input is none abstract and therefore limited to the confines of teh real world user. Hopefully that argument isn't too complex for some of you.

Using a camera for motion tracking and controlling games came out in the 80's. It's true. This stuff isn’t exactly leading edge technology - its software with some basic parameters for vaguely recognizing objects based on size & shape within the focus range of a camera – as the cameras these days are gettin better and improve resolution whilst getting cheaper its a good idea to use them.
Is it original? No but big woop, does it matter?
I say use anything you want to make games fun - you don’t have to have invented the technology for christ sakes. What do you think Nintendo invented accelometers? Just use it - end of story. If no one writes games that use it - then that's a shame.
Hey,i saw a vid like this on Game trailers a while back,some young hobbiest dev made this work with his ps3 dev kit,nice to see that Sony doesn't ignore such innovations like so many other big companies,but that guy better get credit for it though.
