Sony's Peter Dille talks in-game XMB

Posted on December 3rd, 2007 at 22:09 EDT

In a recent interview with Game Informer, Peter Dille, Sony's Senior VP of Marketing, discussed a number of topics regarding the PlayStation 3. While Sony's current place in the console market, exclusive PS3 titles and more may interest gamers, the one you're all dying to hear was indeed included.

While responding to a question about firmware updates, Dille wandered onto the topic of in-game XMB himself:

"As far as in-game XMB access, we know it's a feature that's important to our consumers. Because PS3 packs so much advanced technology 'under the hood,' it takes some time to implement major, new functionalities, but we are working hard on addressing this feature, as well as continually expand the capabilities and functionalities of PS3."

There you have it - they're working on it, and it IS coming at some point in the future. It's been pretty clear that gamers want it, and it seems that they'll eventually receive it. The last question we have is when. More on this controversial topic soon.

After seeing a bump launch last November, and receiving many harsh comments from industry analyst and insiders, the PlayStation 3 has taken the first step into turning th...

I DONT KNOW HOW MANY OF YOU GUYS  ARE HOME BETA TESTERS LIKE MYSELF BUT LET ME TELL YOU ONE THING. THERE IS NO NEED FOR IN GAME XMB WHEN HOME IS RELEASED. WITH HOME YOU JUST PULL UP THE GAME FEATURE AND WALLAH IT SENDS YOU TO YOUR GAME. IF YOUR FRIENDS ARE ONLINE AND THEY WANT YOU TO JOIN THEM YOU CAN JUST JUMP INTO THE GAME. XMB WILL BE A THING OF THE PAST ONCE HOME IS FULLY IMPLEMENTED. I HOPE THAT BY NEXT YEAR THEY HAVE THE FULL VERSION READY FOR US ALL. HOME WILL CHANGE HOW YOU INTERACT WITH A COMPUTER BOX. ALL 3D.

we've ALWAYS known they were working on it. the problem is it's taking too long for some people and that's creating a lot of pain for the consumer having to wait. If it means they're rewriting the PS3's operating system from scratch to implement it. then fine but I think they should say it so that people understand ust how HUGE an undertaking they have to deal with in order to implement something that they know is being demanded of them.

I dont care to be honest.. i like the way it is now. The only two things I want is 1) an option to turn off menu-music (when you select a game - it plays their little song) and 2) time display in the in-game menu.

i dont care , as long it takes .,,, we want it done  righ , atleast they  know we want  it .... but one thing that always  kills me is why  did they ever take it out from tthe  beta  ps3.....like a guy at game informer said . if  only ps3 had in game xmb  xbox  would been least ,,,,, sending messages ,,,, and  music .... i really dont care about in game  music,,, but  i know in game browse is possible ,,,,  psn game pain implemented  browse in it ..... i think  i was amazed , because ,,,,, you always need  the news from the game developers ...... i think we gonna se in game xmb around  08  early  january .... is just blows my mind .... future proof system ... doesnt have the simplest feature ......is it the ram, ?

stennex, how does home fix the issue when if you are already playing a game you have to exit the game to access home or read any of your freinds messages? I think you misunderstand some of the appeal of in game xmb.

I want to have the PS3s In-game XMB via my PSP :D

That way I can control the XMB with my PSP (changing in-game music, etc...) without obstructing the visuals off the PS3 game I'm playing.

Better check your facts GR333DY... Microsoft has released HDMI improvements with the Fall 360 update! But so what... it's all firmware, nothing that can't be fixed, besides I have the DTS fiber optic cable coming out the rear, no need for it to be HDMI.

that's funny. i was on G4(one of the biggest video game channels) and they are having the Free Stuff Christmas Giveway coming up. On the forums, people are suppose to ask what they want and why. Mostly 3/4 of everyone asked for a PS3 because they said that all their friends had one and they want the upcoming games for Christmas. The other 1/4 was iPod. No offense, Xbox360, I think people are wanting the PS3 for Christmas. Now i wait for a PS3 Fanboy o an Xbox Fanboy to trash talk about this post...
