Key designer Tetsuya Nomura has hinted to Dengeki PlayStation magazine that Square Enix will charge for the upcoming PlayStation 3 demo of Final Fantasy XIII.
The demo will be packaged with the Blu-ray release of Final Fantasy Advent Children: Complete next March, as detailed at the company's DKS3173 event, but according to Nomura it will later be made available separately for a price. Square Enix has refused to comment on the interview.
Pretty shameless, if you ask us. In Square Enix's defence, the demo is said to be a whopping 90 minutes long.
Thanks to FinalFantasy-XIII.net for the translation.

No way, I don't care how much a game cost to develop, demo's should always be free otherwise it would defeat the whole purpose of one >.>
* ditto *
P.S. GrayFlare you traitor ... sif Halo >.>
My God. Are they near bankruptcy or something?! What's with all the money-grubbing?
ROFL!? They screwed us by selling out to MS and now want PS3 gamers to pay for demo? They can go screw themselves.
SE has turned itself into the japanese money whore.
Forget it ill wait for the full game to come out, will have waited long time anyway, dont mind waiting longer. Thats a farce and a total rip off, why have demos if ya gonna pay for em, i hope they dont shift many
The day that I pay for a demo will be the day the pope turns into a muslim.
I'm shure all of you will pay to have this.
this is so G@y. sheet they are so low. first selling thier souls for MS no they want you to charge for a faacking demo.
i guess im one of the few who wouldnt mind paying for a demo. but i dont wanna b paying over $5 for it tho. ppl spend about the same amount of $ to make themselves fatter at Burger King, 90 good minutes of FFXIII shouldnt be so bad right ? lol i do want SE to get in a good finacial state, which im not sure they are at atm. i wonder if this is PSN or just seperate disk?
WTH is this all about? no! i won´t buy the demo. i can buy the advent children maybey. but seriously square. fist XIII then the demo? WTF guys
wtf..
are they making fun of ps3 owners ?!
So im going to buy a demo?! haha, ya right.
I certainly won't pay for a demo, I don't care howlong it is.
LOL. Are we buying AC with the demo or buyng the demo with AC?
One thing I'm certain of: I ain't buying no demos.
thats very strange...i belive GT:P is a demo and most of you guys, have it...
I would pay any price for this demo
In PD's defense they didnt sell out to MS then foce people to pay for a demo. Plus GT5:P gets updates. GT5 is a long way away it might not come out until 2010 thats the only reason why i paid for GT5:P. FFXIII ill pass on that if it comes on qore then np because i have the subscription.
I hate the idea to pay for demos, but really, Versus has a point. if it is a 90 min long demo then hey, it's more like a prologue or something anyway. And besides, they haven't said what it'll cost, if it's really cheap then I'll buy it no doubt, if not, well... Then I'll read all I can about the demo to find out if it's big enough, if it's worth the money
Wow how the mighty have fallen. SE that's it man I will never buy another one of your games. I stopped buying EA games about a year ago and I could not be happier, SquareEnix you guys are next.
SE, kiss my @&*. Buying a demo, hah! Pathetic!
@versus you caparison dont make since 1.dont know how much the demo alone will cast yet so how can you say that. 2. nothing in burger king cost more then $10. so in other words paying for a demo is just crazy no matter how much it cost. well me a few dollars wont hurt my pockets i just know i wont be buying the demo alonmagsecUK said it best been waiting this long for FF XIII why pay for a demo when you can wait and buy the full game.
now SE should be a shame of there self, first multiplatere big announcement turned out to be a crappy demo. now they want us to pay for a demo if we dont buy there new movie. the more and more SE open there mouth about FF XIII the more and more i'm thinking of not buying it. i swera SE is dropping the ball this gen with FF on the PS3. FF XIII better worth and out shine all the problems it had just for it to be release on PS3. another thing they're getting over on us they really wont us to pay twice for one game. they better give a vocher pass for a discount on FF XIII VERSUS for those who buy the demo.
First releasing on XBOX, then charging for demo. I thought this was going to help PS3(Extreme FacePalm)
@ 2 so if he loves halo he is a traitor ????!!!!
what a stupid child.
Forgot that, im not going to buy a demo on FFXIII - you buy it or you dont buy.
i will not buy the game before having tested the demo, but there is no way i'm paying for that.. so no sale.
Are they insane? GO screw urself! 90 minutes? I dont give a .... it its 5 hours.
Still a demo, they must be really desperate for money.
hahahaha told ya bout square, bet its 90mins of cut scenes .if u still wanna bye this game at least wait for the review and dont buy on day 1 cause i pretty much bet this is gonna be a very average game now its on the break box.people who say it can still be an amazing game obviously have not played exclusive ps3 games like mgs4 thats only using 30% of ps3 power.
its like i said weeks ago. $E is in it for the money.
Lets hope the demo comes with the English Advent Children BD cuz no way im paying for this...(So i say right now...)
Spore demo cost 10$, GT5P cost what like 40$? Granted GT5P is a VERY big demo but it's just a demo none the less. Not really a problem for me, especially if a demo like this will be an hour and a friggin half long. That's worth the 10-20$ it'll cost to me.
no way!!!....... first they go off and join MS(no more exclusive). then they delay the ps3 siting the xbox version needs to be ported(xbox pulling the ps3 down). and now they want us to pay for a demo(SE becoming like MS). SE has dug a hole, jumped in it and buried them selves.
this wont be a buy for me. i dont want to buy stuff from a company who is unloyal to its customers.Thats one on the many reasons i stay with sony, they are more loyal to thier customers(free onlineness, home remaining FREE :) etc.)
I just lost any respect I still had for SE today
Well, the demo is going to be a whopping 10 minutes now that it's on Xbox 360 lmao!
wow....nothing more is to be said about the once cherished company I used to love...
Bullsh!t we're paying for a demo. Did they not get enough god d@mn3d money for their greed when they sold out to Microsoft?
Lol, RPG makers, good i am not into RPG's whatsoever
Ive never played these games before and im certainly not paying for a demo so i guess im not buying the full game. Their loss.
I haven't been into FF since the 6th one, although I play FF11 still, but I'm not surprised SE is making people pay for it. For shame SE.
Wow, looks like the majority is jumping to conclusions. Yes, IF the demo is pay-to-demo, then that sucks. Tetsuya Nomura is a designer, not sure what kind he is, but I doubt he's in the field with respects to orchestrating the company's wallet. He is simply stating the company is looking at POTENTIALLY introducing a pay-to-demo copy minus the movie. From a business point of view, this makes sense to recapture lost investments. For those of you who hate this idea, support the company and encourage your friends/coworkers to purchase the PS3 version only. Only then will the company see they can keep their exclusive nature and continue to pay their gifted, or not-so-gifted employees, designers, game creators, etc.
And for those of you in America, like myself, blame corporate America if you dislike X360. Make sure to vote, if you are of voting age, for a candidate that'll help diminish corporate America's returns so that companies like Microsoft do not have the dough to entice and pay of others. (I've yet to see proof of this...anyone care to provide a link...I haven't looked for it either... >.>.... I'm lazy...)
#46, paying for a demo sucks no matter how you look at it.
Square enix really has gone down the list of my favorite devolopers over the last month or two. Until I got my ps3, the only games I played on consoles were final fantasy games. I only bought about 10 games on my ps2 and two of them were final fantasy x and xii. Then I got my ps3 and have loved every minute of owning it. I have completely moved away from pc gaming for the moment, (I already own more ps3 games than I have ever owned on ps2) but this just pisses me off. I have bought every final fantasy since final fantasy seven, all of them (except 11 have been on playstation). I have been a loyal final fantasy fan ever since I played my favorite game of all time ff vii. My consoles of choice have always been playstation, and I thought they were squares too. Then they go and announce all these titles going to the 360 with one of them which is, unless I am mistaken, going to be a 360 exclusive (I'm not sure on that, I only follow the final fantasy series of squares). But the announcement of final fantasy xiii going to xbox seemed to me to be a big betrayal to all us fans and to sony. But then they go and tease us ps3 fans with a statement that there will be a HUGE announcement to make us happy, and it turns out to be a demo. WOW! That's huge! Not really, but it was something. Now they say they are going to charge for it. Come on square enix, what are you trying to do, make us all hate you? Becasue judging by a lot of the comments here it is really working! If they want to make it up to us they better remake final fantasy vii and better make it an exclusive. That is the only thing in my mind that will even close to make good on this. I will get the demo but only because I am buying the advent children blu ray. I have been looking forward to that for a long time. But I guarantee you that I would not pay for just a demo. Not even if it was a dollar. It is the principal of the matter. Square enix is taking the biggest fattest dump on us final fantasy and sony fans.
Ha!
Will there be a demo for the demo?
The only thing that comes to mind is fail....
FF Vs. XIII is really the only thing that can redeem them in my (and many others') eyes.
All i got for SE is two words.SUCK IT!!
paid for this demo and next thing we'll see is every fking developer selling their stupid demos! so for the sake of the future free demos dont paid for this moronic SE move
this is crazy square enix. from the days of the psx demos have always been free, why try to make things differently and infact difficult on us. PAY FOR A DEMO??? I really can't believe this. Please can someone tell me that this is just a dream. First of all ps3 loses ffxiii exclusive, and we have to pay in order to get the demo. Seriously i think i will sign out from all ffs as from now. So bye ffxiii and i hope things work out well when the game is released. I am crossed.
I agree with everyone who have said there not paying for a demo. In my opinion, demos are used to introduce a game and how the game is played. So it should always stay free. For all ff13 fans, don't feel disappointed just buy the game or rent it to see if its worth buying.
Doubtful I can add anything new because bravo my friends you have spoken well on the matter. That said, my two cents is forthcoming anyway, if there is even a chance devs look at boards they will by god read what I have to say!
EPIC FAIL #1 -FFXIII going to 360, the game will suffer and sales will be bleak. I'd be surprised if they recouped the lost sale from alienated Sony fans.
EPIC FAIL #2 -Pissing on us and telling us it's raining: Big News? This demo shouldve been out long ago, and how few people in America think that the 360 announcement was a GOOD thing? 360 fanboys are only happy because it delt a blow to Sony, not because they really want this game.
EPIC FAIL #3: Charging for a demo will (as we have seen here) further alienate consumers and the money grubbing practices will ultimately lead to less money. A lot of posters say this is sound business sense, but screwing over your sonsumer base has never been good for business in the long run.
Future EPIC FAIL: If one FF team has the 360 Dev console, they will hand it off to the other FF team and the second FF Versus is deemed possible on the 360 (Lets just shoot for 13 discs shall we?) MS will buy it out and steal another Exclusive, further pissing us off.
After all this goes down we can only hope Square learns their lesson, they wouldn't be charging for this demo if future revenue projections werent crappy.
Bottom Line: Gamers are now a huge demographic, and we are fickle, they are going to have to understand we won't be toyed with, or Square's bankruptcy and current business plan will be the next epic fail.
I have spoken. Whose with me?
have any of you thought it may just be a translation error? stuff like this happens all the time.... every complains and then its found as a translatioin error
Could be possible #57. I mean, there was that translation error with Mirrors Edge
haha not a chance.
is there anyone japan person hating SE??
are you guys retarted or what!!? seriously!! you think a 90 minute long demo is going to be free when every damn demo is 20 mins long TOPS. idiots seriously. there are TWO options either GET A JOB and be ABLE to buy the demo OR stfu and stop whining.
omg losers SE
I agree that it doesn't make much sense to charge for a demo. However, look at gt5 prologue! I payed $39 for that demo! It sounds like these 90 minutes might be a better deal than prologue was, only because I got bored of it after a week and went back to forza. Regardless, this will be a good game, why even offer a demo for a FF game.
Up Yours Square. I'm not buying your shoddy DEMO or any other games again!
Why would anybody pay for this? This is complete madness, for me even prologue is a rip-off, why pay for a half finished games when there are other excellent (complet) games to buy. At first i was looking forward to buying advent children on BD but this kind of news made me change my mind!
they are near bankrupt, but considering that the demo would have to be packaged on a blu ray..... if the cost was like $2 or something like that id be happy to pay it
That certainly ruffled some feathers.
Time that SONY stepped in an told Square Enix that since they sold out to Microsoft and now this that they won't license any SE games or put anything on PSN on their behalf until they start appreciating the Sony and their fans. Just such a shame that their graphics are so sweet otherwise this would have been a no brainer.
haha, yeah right. well they aint getting my money
